SAVING DAYLIGHT SAVING?
As much of the Northern Hemisphere gets set to spring their clocks forward one hour early Sunday, the twice-annual question has once again arisen: “Why do we keep doing this?” Studies have shown that the transition to daylight saving time each spring affects health immediately after the clock change — and also for the nearly 8 months that we remain on daylight saving time. While some states and provinces have passed laws to adopt year-round DST, none have actually gone into effect, with many jurisdictions waiting for their neighbors to do the same. And doing so might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Experts say a move to permanent STANDARD time (as Mexico has done) is more appropriate, citing the fact that it is more in line with the body’s natural rhythm. Consider:
• Many children start school at 8am or earlier, which means that during DST, they get up and travel to school in pitch darkness.
• The extended evening light delays the brain’s release of melatonin, which in turn interferes with sleep and causes us to sleep less overall. This especially affects adolescents, who are particularly susceptible to sleep problems form extended evening light.
• A study found that “circadian misalignment” can be a cause of higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer, as well as lower per capita income and higher health care costs.
• The idea that having extra light later into the afternoon would save energy by decreasing the need for electricity has since been proven largely inaccurate.
(If you asked me right now, I’d say: Daylight Saving – heck yes!” But ask me on Monday morning, and I might have a few other choice words about the concept!)
(I’d prefer to stick with it…but I’m not gonna lose sleep over it. Wait…what?)

THESPIAN LINGO:
In recognition of the 96th Academy Awards this Sunday, here is a look at commonly-used “stage talk” among actors, actresses, and crew…
✪ Corpse: To get the giggles while on set or on stage (especially when the actor is playing a dead person).
✪ Peas and carrots: The words actors in crowd scenes murmur to sound as if they’re reacting to a speech.
✪ Actor-proof: When a play or movie is so good, it doesn’t matter who plays the parts.
✪ Stinger: An extension cord. Why? In Hollywood’s early years, if there was a malfunction, the electrical shock would, well, sting.
✪ Go up: To forget your lines.
✪ Greek: Comes from the phrase “It’s all Greek to me.” Greeking is the art department’s process of removing branding from any products that will appear on screen, where the company hasn’t paid for product placement.
✪ Sticks: The director of photography might announce that the next shot will be on “sticks,” which is another name for a tripod.
✪ George Spelvin: (You might have heard of this one) A fake name that actors use when they don’t want to use their real name or don’t want to reveal that they’re playing multiple characters.
✪ The Abby Singer Shot: He was a production manager known for informing his crew when the second-to-last shot for a location, or for the day, was happening. This gave the crew time to either transport the equipment not in use to the next location, or to put it away, saving priceless production time that could be better spent later on. His legacy continues with his name being synonymous for the second-to-last shot of the day.
✪ The Martini Shot: This means the last shot of the day. The nickname likely originates from a joke about where the following shot will be … at the bar.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A town in West Virginia held candlelit vigil for a local Hooters that was set to be demolished. The restaurant, in Kanawha City, a neighborhood in Charleston, got a proper farewell in late February from its customers, who held on to hope for years that it would re-open, after closing 4 years ago. The memorial began on Facebook, where people — locals and visitors alike — shared their memories of their favourite hangout. Outside the closed restaurant, organizers made chicken wings with Hooters wing sauce and served up helpings of its famed Strip Cheese Sandwich. (I guess you could say the restaurant was a ‘bust’!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mryuu75t
[***CAUTION – content***] ➢ A high school in Kentucky was evacuated after “fart spray” was unleashed inside the facility on Tuesday. Police say that shortly after 11am, school officials began receiving reports of “a strong gas odor” inside Oldham County High School in Buckner. The scent prompted officials to evacuate students and faculty from the building. The fire department used equipment to clear the odor, and students returned to class. Detectives later determined that the cause of the odor was “a non-toxic concentrated liquid product commonly advertised online for use in pranks,” with the school describing the product as a “fart spray.” (Well, it turns out the initial reports of “a strong gas odor” were absolutely correct!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A purse made out of nothing but glass and air made its debut at Paris Fashion Week. The fashion label Coperni partnered with NASA to create the Air Swipe bag, a blink-and-you-miss-it accessory with a translucent appearance. With a composition of 99% air and 1% glass, the cutting-edge transparent purse weighs only 33 grams — about the same as a lightbulb. Coperni said the cloud-like handbag is the biggest ever object made from the space technology nanomaterial silica aerogel, which is the lightest solid on Earth and is used by NASA to capture stardust.
