SHOOTING THE BULL
YOUNG AND LISTLESS:
❑ More than half of young workers admit they use minor illnesses to avoid “adulting”. A survey of 1,000 millennial and 1,000 Gen Z office employees revealed that 54% refuse to do things like laundry (59%), buying groceries (59%), and cleaning their room or apartment (58%), chores which often end up being done by their unfortunate parents, partners, or roommates. (So – just about half of young adults get the sniffles, then they lay around on the couch all day, avoiding any kind of household chores. I feel the need to point out that about half of young adults are male, too. So that sounds about right!)
❑ More than a third of teens say they know that they should cut back on the amount of time they spend on their phones, according to a new survey. This info comes from the Pew Research Center in the US, as concerns about the potential harm from social media to young users’ mental health and well-being continue to escalate among parents, schools and lawmakers. All but 5% of US teens have access to a smartphone. The good news is that the study also found that about 40% of teens say they have cut back on their time on social media. (It was also found that about 40% of teens will tell researchers whatever they want to hear, just to get them to bug off!)

WOOLY MAMMOTH: THE SEQUEL:
The team involved in a plan to genetically engineer a version of the woolly mammoth says the project is moving right along. The long-term goal is to create a living, walking elephant-mammoth hybrid that would be pretty much the same as its extinct forerunner, which lived about 4,000 years ago. Scientists say that if the newly-created tusked species was released into its natural habitat in sufficient numbers, it could help restore the fragile Arctic tundra ecosystem. Resurrecting the beast has been a pet project of Harvard University geneticist George Church for more than a decade. After analyzing the genomes of woolly mammoths from fossils, his team plans to use elephant stem cells which have been edited to have mammoth-like genetic traits. The elephant’s cells could be used to make eggs and sperm and an embryo that could be grown in an artificial womb. And considering that womb hasn’t been developed yet, there are still years of work ahead. There are also plans to resurrect the Tasmanian tiger and the dodo…but those ones haven’t got off the tundra ground yet…
(…at the very least, they’ll have the plot for another Jurassic Park movie!)
(I can’t wait to see how some rich restaurant owner manages to turn all this into a new kind of steak!)

AIRBN BIG BROTHER:
Airbnb has announced that it is banning security cameras inside guest homes, as a way of providing more privacy to customers. Up until now, the home rental platform allowed hosts to install indoor security cameras in common areas such as hallways and living rooms – as long as they were clearly visible and mentioned online in the property’s official listing. But some guests claimed on social media that they found seemingly hidden cameras in areas where privacy is expected. In a blog post, the company said: “Airbnb is banning the use of indoor security cameras in listings globally as part of efforts to simplify our policy on security cameras…and to continue to prioritize the privacy of our community.” The new policy goes into effect on April 30.
(If they really want to make their guests happy, they should ban owners from leaving a list of chores you have to do in the morning…!)
(That’s fine and all, but I’m still waiting for them to enforce the second “B” in their name [Breakfast]!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Do you really need to take 10,000 steps a day for good health? Although studies have shown that you really only need to take half that many, a new report finds 10,000 is still a good goal for those who sit for much of the day, like office workers. University of Sydney researchers found that taking 9,000-10,000 steps per day correlated with 21% decrease in the risk of cardiovascular diseases – and a 39% reduction in death risk, no matter how much time was spent being sedentary. The scientists say their study highlights the fact that all movement matters, and that people should “try to offset the health consequences of… sedentary time by upping their daily step count.” (Fine. Instead of the drive-thru, I’m gonna walk right into the burger joint for takeout!)

BS CHRONOMETER 03.14.24
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Ask a Question Day”, an annual observance with the goal of improving our knowledge and lives by asking more and better questions. Such as …
– Do you need an appointment to see a psychic, or are they expecting you?
– If an ambulance is on its way to save someone and it runs over someone else, does it stop to help?
– What do you say when someone says you’re in denial, but you’re not?
– Why is it called “beauty sleep” when you wake up looking like a troll?
• “Potato Chip Day”, honoring North America’s favorite snack food. It was invented by chef George Crum (yup, ‘Crum’!) on this day in 1853 at a resort in Saratoga Springs NY after an uppity diner complained the potato slices were too thick. (What’s the best-flavored potato chip? Worst?) [***See ‘BS Phone Starter’, below***]
• “Popcorn Lover’s Day”, observed on the 2nd Thursday of March as a salute to one of our favorite snack foods. Popcorn is actually good for you when eaten plain; but not quite so healthy when loaded with salt and butter (or whatever that goo is they use in movie theaters).
• “Crowdfunding Day”. Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project from small amounts of money contributed by a large number of people. Although the term “crowdfunding” wasn’t coined until the early 2000s, fans actually pitched in to financially support a tour by Mozart in 1783.
• “Save a Spider Day”, a day to appreciate arachnids and the webs they weave.
• “World Pi Day”, as in March 14, or 3/14 or 3.14 … get it? It honors the magic number for circles that expresses the ratio between radius and circumference. (5 years ago today, on ‘Pi Day’, Google announced employee Emma Haruka Iwao had broken the world record for calculating pi, to 31.4 trillion digits, using Google Cloud).
• “Genius Day”, celebrated on the anniversary of the 1879 birth of Albert Einstein. It was him who said, “The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has limits.”
• “Legal Assistance Day, aiming to help us understand the importance of what lawyers do for their communities, by giving people a way to handle and resolve their legal needs. (And they’re also a rich source of joke material!)
• “World Kidney Day”, an annual health awareness campaign on the 2nd Thursday of March, focused on reducing the frequency and impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems. LINK: http://www.worldkidneyday.org

BS VARIATIONS OF ‘MANSPLAINING’:
• Firemansplaining – When a firefighter advises “You better get out of here!” as your house is in flames.
• Rain Mansplaining – When you’re at a diner with Dustin Hoffman and he knocks over a box of toothpicks and says there are exactly 246 on the floor.
• Aquamansplaining – When you’re a fish and ‘Aquaman’ summons you to fight an underwater pirate who is trying to destroy the kingdom of ‘Atlantis’.
• Doormansplaining – When you’re going to your girlfriend’s apartment and the doorman says, “You can go right ahead. The apartment is 17H.” Like you’ve never been there.
• Weathermansplaining – When you turn on the TV and a forecaster predicts it’s going to rain and suggests you might consider taking an umbrella to work. Thanks for the info, Captain Obvious.

➠ St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. (It is considered the 4th biggest drinking day of the year, just behind New Years Eve, the 4th of July, and Election Night…)
