Good Morning, Sheetheads!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ In one of the most crowded, celebrity-propelled Broadway seasons in recent memory, 3 musicals — 2 based upon popular movies — lead the pack of Tony nominees for 2025, with an impressive 10 nods each. “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Death Becomes Her,” and “Maybe Happy Ending” all scored big. Among plays, the top nominees are “John Proctor Is the Villain” and “The Hills of California”. Both received 7 nods. George Clooney received a nod for his first-ever Broadway appearance in his own “Good Night, and Good Luck,” Bob Odenkirk is up for a Tony for his role in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” and Mia Farrow was nominated for “The Roommate.” Notables who were not nominated include “Othello” stars Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, “Redwood” actress Idina Menzel, and “Once Upon a Mattress” lead Sutton Foster. Cynthia Erivo hosts the 78th Tony Awards June 8.

★ Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct the upcoming “Road House” sequel — and Jake Gyllenhaal will be reprising his role as ‘Dalton’, who works as a “cooler” at a dive bar in the Florida Keys. Doug Liman directed 2024’s “Road House,” a new spin on the classic Patrick Swayze movie. The film debuted to a record-breaking 50 million worldwide viewers on Prime Video over its first 2 weekends – the largest movie debut for an Amazon MGM Studios-produced original in the streamer’s history. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

★ Alan Bersten knows what it takes to bring home the Mirrorball trophy. And after Robert Irwin was announced as the first celebrity contestant for “Dancing With the Stars” season 34, the pro dancer told “E!” what he believes could lead him to victory. Quote: “I would tell him to be himself because he’s so personable. He’s going to do so well this season.” Irwin, the son of the late wildlife TV personality Steve Irwin, has some big dance shoes to fill, too. His older sister Bindi won the competition alongside partner Derek Hough 10 years ago.

A NIGHT OUT, IN:
You’ve heard of a “staycation”? Now, welcome to the age of going “out on the town at home”. A new survey shows that these days, people much prefer to enjoy a night IN with guests, rather than going out. The survey of 2,000 Americans found, of those who have a preference, 72% would pick staying in with friends, while just 28% prefer a night out. And half said this change in attitude came in the past few years. In addition to the fact that the home might provide a more comfortable environment (according to 65%), 53% said hosting at home is a good way to save money, and 47% said it’s easier to hear each other. Other top benefits to hosting at home cited by respondents, in order of popularity, included avoiding crowds, having more control over ambiance, food, drinks, and entertainment, and not having to get dressed up.
(Plus this: No lineup at the restroom. Bazinga!)
(Yeah, in the last few years, I came realize that hosting at home is better too. Mostly because when my neck starts to transform into a noodle at about 9:30, I’d much rather be 15 feet from my bed, than 15 feet from a dance floor!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A British man who paid more than $26,000 to replace his stolen car discovered he had actually bought his own vehicle back. Ewan Valentine discovered on Feb. 28 that his black Honda Civic Type-R had been stolen from its overnight parking space. He decided to replace the car with a nearly-identical vehicle, and posted: “Sure enough, I found one for sale. Same color, same year, same custom exhaust system.” The plates and VIN were different from his stolen vehicle, so he went ahead and bought it. But after he noticed some familiar-looking snack wrappers in the console, he decided to check the car’s GPS – and discovered it had previously been to his house – and his parents’ house. A Honda dealership confirmed the VIN was fake, and it was indeed his car. Valentine said he does not believe the garage that sold him the car knew it was stolen. (Imagine that! Your snacks solving the case before police do!)
➢ A man had to be rescued from a mountain in Japan twice in 4 days – after he returned to search for his cell phone. The climber, a 27-year-old Chinese student living in Japan, was airlifted with altitude sickness from near the peak of Mount Fuji after making an emergency call on April 22 due to symptoms of altitude sickness. On the 26th, he returned to the mountain’s Fujinomiya trail, about 10,000 feet above sea level, to search for his phone and other belongings that he had left behind when he was rescued. It was there that another climber found him unable to move with symptoms of altitude sickness, again. (I guess he would have made another emergency call, but – well, you know…!)

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a trial lawyer and podcaster, there are 2 words that are “dead giveaways” that someone is telling a lie – and he knows how to get them to confess. On a recent episode of “Diary of a CEO”, Jefferson Fisher shared that when people are trying to hide the truth, they often rely on absolutes, like “never” or “always”. He used the example of someone claiming they never text when they drive. According to Fisher, extremes like “always” and “never” are a “dead giveaway that they’re usually not telling the truth,” Jefferson said. To catch a liar, he advises you slowly repeat the question, to which the person will likely say: “Well, I mean sometimes I do.” (Aha! Your honor, let the record show that the accused just admitted that he sometimes, always, never, texts while driving!))

BS CHRONOMETER 05.02.25
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Brothers and Sisters Day!”, a day to let siblings know you care. (Or maybe to add up all the times you got ratted on, had your hair pulled or your dessert stolen … and get even!)
• “Play Your Ukulele Day”, when you’re encouraged to play a ukulele, share your ukulele, and teach someone else how to play. (What’s the difference between a ukulele and a trampoline? You take your shoes off to jump on a trampoline.)
• “Life Insurance Day”, the anniversary of the day life insurance became available in the United States in 1759. (They say that life insurance is like fun: The older you get, the more it costs…)
• “Truffle Day”, celebrating the chocolate confectionery traditionally made with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate, icing, cocoa powder, and chopped nuts or coconut.
• “No Pants Day”, the perfect excuse to…well, you know. Go about your normal routine and act as normal as possible, as if nothing is odd about not wearing pants. Why? We’re not quite sure. But as you may have guessed, the idea came from a group of college students. (University of Texas at Austin).
• “International Tuba Day”, to celebrate the musical instrument that seems to get no respect, and to recognize tubists around-the-world who struggle with the ‘weight and size of their instrument’.
• “World Tuna Day”, not to encourage us to eat more tuna fish, but to bring attention to this valuable species threatened by demand for its meat, mostly in the form of canned tuna and sushi.
• “Fire Day”. What’s your celebration plan? Of course, there are many interesting things you could do, such as:
⇒ Fire up the grill.
⇒ Light a match under someone.
⇒ Sing ‘Ring of Fire’.
⇒ Install Firefox.
⇒ Watch “Chicago Fire”. (I don’t even want to know how my boss plans to celebrate!)
SATURDAY:
• “Beer Pong Day”, first organized at The University of Arizona in Tucson. It’s a celebration of the most-popular game in college dorms everywhere.
• “Free Comic Book Day”, held on the first Saturday in May, when participating comic book shops give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes in.
• “Two Different Colored Shoes Day”. Celebrate your uniqueness and put it on display today. Wear 2 different colored shoes, and see where they take you. (I think [***afternoon guy***] celebrates this a few times every month…)
• “Wordsmith Day. Just one more excuse for miscellaneous merriment. How scintillating, yet somehow egregious…
• “Paranormal Day”, a day for all paranormal enthusiasts to get together and share their unique experiences with each other. Seminars and readings are scheduled worldwide. (Personally, I would hold this on Oct. 31. Maybe have a pair o’ paranormal days?)
• “Specially-Abled Pets Day”, begun in 2006 to educate the public about caring for disabled pets and to find homes for orphaned and physically-challenged animals.
• “World Press Freedom Day”, created by the UN to recognize the value of freedom of expression and the sacrifices journalists have made to attain this freedom.
• “International Space Day”, dedicated to the extraordinary achievements, benefits, and opportunities in the exploration of space. The goal is to promote math, science, technology, and engineering education in young people, in hopes of inspiring them to pursue a career in science or space-related jobs.
• “Garden Meditation Day”, a day to let go of your concerns, and center your full attention on a garden, even if it’s just for a few minutes. (Maybe meditate about when you’re going to get around to weeding?)
SUNDAY:
• “Intergalactic Star Wars Day”, an unofficial holiday celebrating the Star Wars media franchise. Why today? Because of the painful pun: “May the 4th be with you” (ouch!). Even though the holiday was not created by Lucasfilm, it has been embraced by the company, and parent company Disney, as an annual celebration of Star Wars.
• “International Firefighters’ Day”, to recognize the efforts of those brave hearts who risk their lives to keep us safe. (And the job consistently picked in polls as ‘Sexiest Profession’.) LINK: www.firefightersday.org
• “Petite & Proud Day”, for all people under 5’4″ who are tired of derogatory comments about their size. It’s all about celebrating your lack of height and the advantages it brings. Famous names 5’4″ and under include: Amy Poehler, Eva Longoria, Natalie Portman, Michael J Fox, Reese Witherspoon, Dolly Parton and Bruno Mars. (And, we suspect, Danny DeVito…)
• “Relationship Renewal Day”, a day to forget the old problems and celebrate your relationship making it through yet another year. Couples are encouraged to congratulate one another … and themselves.
• “National Day of Reason”, a secular celebration for humanists, atheists, and other secularists and freethinkers, in response to the National Day of Prayer.
• “Respect For Chickens Day”, promoting compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl. Advocacy group United Poultry Concerns asks us to celebrate the beauty and dignity of chickens and protest the bleakness of their lives in farming operations. LINK: www.upc-online.org
• “National Orange Juice Day”. When someone mentions Vitamin C, you probably picture a glass of orange juice. OJ has more nutrients than virtually any other fruit juice. If you want maximum goodness, drink it with the pulp in. (If you don’t, have a screwdriver!)
• “Anti-Bullying Day”, as declared by the UN, when people wear a pink shirt to symbolize a stand against bullying. It originated in Canada, and is now celebrated on various dates around the world.
