BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The coronation of King Charles III will be a star-studded event with newly-announced guests Tom Cruise, Nicole Scherzinger…and even Winnie the Pooh. All 3 will appear at the “Coronation Concert” on May 7 at Windsor Castle. Cruise and Winnie the Pooh will reportedly appear in a series of pre-recorded videos, where they will explain some “little-known facts about the king”. They join previously-announced stars, including Joan Collins, Tom Jones, Bear Grylls and dancer Oti Mabuse for these segments. Scherzinger has joined the concert as a singing performer.

★ “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has officially accomplished what no other animated movie has since the pandemic began: reach the $1 billion mark at the global box office. The Nintendo adaptation hit the mark at the start of its 4th weekend in theaters, adding an estimated $37.5 million from North American theaters along with an estimated $69 million overseas. It’s the 11th film in animated history and the first of the 2020s to reach $1 billion, passing “Minions: The Rise of Gru” to become the highest-grossing movie of the post-shutdown era.

★ As you’re no doubt aware, CBS aired the final episode of “The Late Late Show” after a 28-year run on Thursday, and its termination may have had to do with the show’s declining profitability. Los Angeles magazine is quoting a source as saying that the late-night show, hosted by James Corden since 2015, cost $60-65 million per year to produce — but only made less than $45 million. The anonymous exec said: “It was simply not sustainable. CBS could not afford him anymore.” Corden announced his exit as host in April 2022, but at the time, it was unclear at the time if the Late Late Show franchise would continue.

★ Michael J Fox has shared an update about his health condition, admitting that living with Parkinson’s disease is “getting tougher” every day. On CBS Sunday Morning, he sat down with Jane Pauley to talk about the increasing obstacles that come with the disease as he ages. During the interview, the “Back to the Future” star said his condition is “getting worse”, and saying: “You don’t die from Parkinson’s. You die with Parkinson’s. So, I’ve been thinking about the mortality of it. I’m not gonna be 80. I’m not gonna be 80.”

★ The acrimonious relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard will be revisited in a new book by journalist Nick Wallis. “Depp v Heard: The Unreal Story,” out May 17, covers the 2 jaw-dropping trials that unfolded in the wake of the couple’s 2016 split. The author calls it “an attempt to pull apart the evidence from both the UK and US trials and piece together what really happened.” Wallis says he is the only journalist to cover both trials extensively.

★ “Jeopardy!” co-hosts Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik, along with “Wheel of Fortune” co-host Vanna White, are competing on “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” for charity. In a sneak peek of the episode, the trio attempt to solve a puzzle — to hilarious results. Bialik incorrectly guesses “Funny meeting you here?”, before dramatically leaning over in defeat. Jennings swoops in for the win, guessing: “Fancy meeting you here.” Pat Sajak then jokes: “They may be 2 hosts, but they work together like that. “It’s really wonderful to see.” Jennings, Bialik and White step into the unusual role as contestants in the crossover episode, set to air May 10.

SHOOTING THE BULL
SCIENTISTS SAY:
➢ Nappers who sleep more than half- hour in the middle of the day are more likely to be obese or suffer from high blood pressure, according to a new study. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that longer siesta-takers are more likely to have a higher Body Mass Index (BMI), higher blood pressure, and a cluster of other conditions linked to heart disease and diabetes. Meanwhile, those who took “power naps” of less than 30 minutes avoided these increased health risks — and even showed better blood pressure levels than those who avoid naps altogether. (Yeah? Take my blood pressure when the kids barge into the house, just as I’m easing into minute-29 of my dream about Margot Robbie, a Ferrari, and pizza!)
➢ Researchers from Colorado State University say bugs are a smart choice for dinner. In a study, they found that both the chitin (kai’tin) and healthy fats gained by eating insects appear to contribute to healthy gut microbiota and provide plenty of essential protein and nutrients. The research focused on how cricket-derived designer chocolate patties may affect the digestion process. (I’m very happy to hear that we should be eating bugs, because I just bought a motorcycle!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A 7th grader in Michigan is being called a hero for preventing his school bus from crashing after its driver lost consciousness. Dillon Reeves, a student at Lois E. Carter Middle School in Warren, took immediate action on a bus ride home in “an extraordinary act of courage and maturity,” the school superintendent said. The bus driver experienced dizziness while driving and followed protocol by alerting ‘“home base” that she wasn’t feeling well and was going to pull over. But the driver passed out before stopping, and the bus started to veer into oncoming traffic. Reeves “jumped up from his seat, threw his backpack down, ran to the front of the bus, grabbed the steering wheel and eased the bus to a stop in the middle of the road” in the midst of panic. In a video released by authorities, Reeves is seen taking control of the steering wheel, slowly pushing the brakes, and yelling to the other kids: “Someone call 911! Now!” No one was injured and the bus driver is fine.
➢ The world can feel pretty rotten sometimes, but new findings reveal that a small act of kindness occurs about every 2 minutes. Researchers at UCLA, in collaboration with an international team of scientists, found that people all over the world signal others for assistance every couple of minutes — and the vast majority of the time people are there to help. It was found that individuals complied with small requests 77% of the time, compared to ignoring them 11% of the time, and rejecting the chance to help someone, which happened 10% of the time. (Someone forgot to say “Please”!)

THE DADDY OF ‘EM ALL:
A Dutch court has banned a man from donating any more of his sperm after he fathered at least 550 children in the Netherlands and other countries — and misled prospective parents about the number of offspring he helped to conceive. The donor, identified as ‘Jonathan M.’, provided sperm to several Dutch fertility clinics and to a clinic in Denmark as well as to many others he connected with through ads and online forums. The court noted that under Dutch guidelines, sperm donors are allowed to produce a maximum of 25 children with 12 mothers.
(Well done. Now, what are we gonna do about Nick Cannon?)
(He should have been fined. Actually, they should make him pay paternity for eternity!)

TRAVEL TIPS FROM A FLIGHT ATTENDANT:
TikTok’er Kat Kamalani is a flight attendant who shares all sorts of advice for flying that only a person in her job would know. Here are some things she does now when flying, thanks to her on-the-job experience…
1. Try lifting your carry-on at home to see if you can put it in the overhead compartment. If not, remove some stuff. (And remember – you’ll probably have more stuff for the trip home…)
2. Look at the placard on the airplane. It’s a little diagram that tells you whether the luggage should be stored vertically or horizontally. This saves so much time.
3. Ask for assistance. Although it isn’t the flight attendant’s job to lift your carry-on, they are happy to assist you.
And here are some more of her travel tips…
☞ Always try to get a middle or an aisle seat (for safety purposes).
☞ Always bring a treat for the flight attendants (A $5 Starbucks card, lip balm, candy, any little treat will ensure you are treated royally by the flight staff).
☞ Always bring a little bag for your essentials (just in case “something happens”).
☞ Never travel with a purse (use a fanny pack instead).
☞ Always wear your seatbelt (even if the seatbelt sign is off).
(What would you add to the list?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Parrots that have been taught to contact their feathered friends via Facetime appear less isolated or lonely. That’s according to a recent study at Northeastern University in Boston. The researchers said that parrots are a highly social species, and when they live with humans, they’re usually isolated from other birds, which can lead to loneliness and boredom. In the study, parrots were taught the association between ringing a bell and their owner bringing an iPad with a selection of birds. Then, the parrot could choose which one they’d like to call via video. The researchers noted that it was important to allow the parrots to choose which of their “friends” to call. (They’re teaching parrots to Facetime, and I can’t seem to teach my PARENTS to do it!)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.01.2023
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “May Day”, a traditional holiday celebration since ancient times. Since 1889, it’s been officially observed in 66 countries as a “Labor Day” holiday.
• “Lei Day”, celebrated in Hawaii instead of May Day. It is a time to celebrate native Hawaiian culture. One of the most common flowers used in leis is the orchid.
• “Phone in Sick Day”, a day when people call in sick as a form of protest against longer work hours, less leisure time, and a lower quality of life, and to show their dissatisfaction with the “rat race” of modern life. (Try calling in sick today with eye problems. As in: “I just couldn’t see myself going to work today”!)
• “Couple Appreciation Day”, for those who are in a relationship to do something to show their appreciation for their partner (or partners!).
• “Mother Goose Day”, which actually honors many different writers. The term was first used in the title of the nursery rhyme collection “Mother Goose’s Melody” in about 1765. The name caught on and nursery rhymes have been attributed to ‘Mother Goose’ ever since.
• “School Principals Day”. It’s a dirty job but some sadist has gotta do it! How do you remember how to spell ‘Principal’? Just remember that he/she is always your ‘pal’!
• “Chocolate Parfait Day”. Parfait literally means “perfect” in French! The American style layers parfait cream, ice cream and flavored gelatin in a tall, clear glass topped with whipped cream, fruit and liqueurs.
• “Law Day”. This day allows all Americans to reflect on the personal rights and liberties which are enjoyed and exercised daily.
• “New Homeowner’s Day”. Congratulations, you’ll be debt-free in about 30 years! Got your repair manual yet?
• “Melanoma Monday”, to raise awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers and encourage early detection through self-exams. Here are some ways to reduce your risk:
⇒ Wear sunscreen to protect from harmful UV rays. Reapply it throughout the day, too.
⇒ Wear a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and pants. And don’t forget to cover the back of your neck.
⇒ Find shade. Trees, umbrellas, and awnings provide excellent protection on sunny days.
⇒ Don’t let the clouds fool you. UV rays still reach your skin on a cloudy day.
⇒ Avoid tanning beds. The UV light puts you at risk for melanoma, too.
⇒ Regularly check your skin for abnormal moles. If you notice changes, see a dermatologist.
