BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ Bernard Hill, best known for his roles in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “Titanic”, has died at the age of 79. He played ‘Theoden, King of Rohan’, in the Oscar-winning fantasy films based on the novels by JRR Tolkien, and the part of ‘Captain Edward Smith’ in James Cameron’s disaster movie. Thanks to Titanic and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, Hill is the only actor in history to appear in more than one film that won 11 or more Oscars. He died early Sunday. No word on a cause of death.

★ Jerry Seinfeld crashed the “Saturday Night Live” “Weekend Update” segment, and Colin Jost introduced him as “a man who did too much press.” The “Seinfeld” star has been on a press tour promoting his Netflix movie “Unfrosted”, which he directed and stars in. He arrived appearing frazzled at the Update desk, not knowing where he was, and asking if it was a podcast. Seinfeld acknowledged that he couldn’t undo all the press he had done, but wanted to share his wisdom to the star of “The Fall Guy”, saying: “If you are struggling with press, you’re not alone. I’m talking to you Ryan Gosling. When I started doing press for Unfrosted, I was like you—funny, good-looking. Now, look at me. Do you think this is how I wanted to spend my 26th birthday?”

★ Lynne Spears hopped on a flight to LA after her daughter Britney’s tumultuous night at the Chateau Marmont that resulted in the pop star injuring her foot. Paparazzi caught up with the mom of 3 at LAX, as she was being picked up by her son, Bryan, who has had a relatively good relationship with his famous sister in recent years. An ambulance was called for Britney early Thursday after she allegedly got into a fight with her boyfriend, and she later blamed her mother for the drama.

★ “The Fall Guy” isn’t giving theaters the start to the summer box office it wanted, earning a domestic opening weekend of just $28.5 million, according to latest estimates. The only good news is that the film’s reception has been excellent, earning an A- from audiences on CinemaScore, and positive Rotten Tomatoes scores of 83% critics and 87% audience. The question now is whether that can generate enough word-of-mouth to help draw future audiences so it can turn a profit against its reported $130 million budget.

★ The man who attacked Dave Chappelle onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022, has sued the venue and its security for battery and negligence. In legal documents, Isaiah Lee identifies himself as bisexual and claims he was “upset by the discriminatory nature of the comedian’s jokes and rushed the stage in protest”. That’s when he says that the security company “began beating” him “ruthlessly.” He also claims the company “allowed members of the comedian’s entourage, encouraged by the comedian, to beat” him. Lee is not suing Chappelle himself.

★ Drew Carey says you’ll have to pry his gig hosting “The Price Is Right” from his cold dead hands. Speaking at CBS’ fall schedule celebration, he revealed he has no plans of retiring from his post — ever. Carey said to People: “Thoughts of dying on stage with a microphone in my hand have gone through my mind. I never want to leave. I’m having such a good time there. Everybody treats me great.” He pointed out that at age 65, he appreciates that he’s in an enviable position and he wants to “keep that going” as long as he can.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Imagine Dragons – Friday, they released a remix of ‘Eyes Closed’ featuring J Balvin dropping a few bars in Spanish. The new album “Loom” drops June 28. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3s8xtprr
• Taylor Swift — Even Ryan Gosling isn’t immune to the tear-jerking powers of ‘All Too Well’. He said in an interview that while shooting a scene in “The Fall Guy” where his character ‘Colt’ has a good cry in the car while listening to the ballad, he sobbed to much that it was too much for the movie’s final cut. Quote: “There were so many tears.”
• Ozzy Osbourne – wants to perform at his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Despite his retirement from touring due to health issues, he recently indicated he’s waiting for the all clear to sing at the Oct. ceremony. Quote: “I’d like to do a gig without falling over now [but] one surgeon [is] taking his time” in giving him permission to retake the stage.
• U2 – has dropped the 3rd installment in its digital series “U2 To Love and Only Love – Deep Dives and B-Sides”, which are collections of songs that were only available on vinyl, CD or cassette. The new collection includes a remastered version of the ‘Last Night on Earth’, plus a remix. • Kane Brown and Marshmello – are collaborating again. After meshing their country-pop and dance stylings to great success with 2019’s ‘One Thing Right’, they are trying to recapture the magic with the new summer-styled single ‘Miles on It’. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ywptet34
• Sam Hunt – ‘Outskirts’ is at the top of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. It’s his 10th #1, equalling the 3-week reign of his 2017 smash ‘Body Like a Back Road’.
• Keith Urban – Friday, he dropped ‘GO HOME W U’, featuring Lainey Wilson, the third song released from his new album due this fall. He says that while he and his co-writers didn’t intend it to be a duet, they were sure of one thing. Quote: “Before we knew it, we were writing a chorus that could be sung by any drunk person in any bar anywhere in the world.”
SHOOTING THE BULL
NEW FOOD NEWS:
⇒ McDonald’s is getting set to release its biggest-ever hamburger. CFO Ian Borden confirmed last week that the company has “created a larger satiating burger” that will be rolled out worldwide. No word on when, but we can expect the beefed-up burger sooner rather than later. A McDonald’s hamburger patty currently weighs in at 1.6 ounces (45g) and comes on a bun which is around 4 inches (10cm) in diameter. The Big Mac is made with 2 patties served on a 3-slice sesame seed bun. It’s unknown how big the new burger will be. (But we do know it’ll look a lot bigger in the commercials!)
⇒ A US sandwich chain has partnered with a Bloody Mary mix maker to create “Brunch in a Cup” – just in time for Mother’s Day. Jimmy John’s and Zing Zang’s new collab brings together sandwiches and Bloody Marys, using the brands’ “Jimmy Pickle Bloody Mary Mix”, a custom glass that says “mama approved,” a Bloody Mary recipe, and a huge skewer to hold a large pickle and sandwich from Jimmy John’s. The pickle and sandwich are sold separately, but there also is a gift card in the box. One of the staples of the Jimmy John’s menu is its jumbo pickles. Zig Zang used juice from the pickles to create the Bloody Mary mix. The kit will set you back $35. (Give Mom a Mother’s Day to remember – that she won’t remember!) LINK: https://store.jimmyjohns.com/

MUFFLER REACTION:
If you’ve ever been cut off by someone driving a car with an obnoxiously loud muffler — and called the driver a ‘psycho’ — you just might have been right. Psychology professor Julie Aitken Schermer of Western University in London ON started to wonder exactly what type of person feels the need to drive a car with a modified muffler and beefed-up engine, so she decided to find out. She administered personality tests to 529 young people – mostly men — about noisy cars, muffler mods, and if driving one made them feel “cool.” Her ensuing report is called: “A desire for a loud car with a modified muffler is predicted by being a man and higher scores on psychopathy and sadism” . . . and you can pretty much guess what it tells us. In the professor’s words: “It was sadism and psychopathy predicting who wants to modify their mufflers, who feels more connected to their vehicle, and they think loud cars are really cool.” It also determined that “This callous disregard for other people’s feelings and their reactions (is their) psychopathy coming out and…they probably get a kick out of enjoying watching people get startled.” Although she points out that not all loud car lovers share psychopathic traits, “The personality profile…with loud mufflers are the same personality profile of people who illegally commit arson.”
(OK, now tell me about the dudes who also have one of those enormous bass speakers in the trunk. Is there a word for double-psycho?)
(There’s a 90% chance they also don’t use their turn signals…the psychos!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ The world is a step closer to having access to a “gamechanger” cancer vaccine. The world’s first personalized mRNA cancer jab is being tested in British patients – and it is being described as “one of the most exciting developments in modern cancer therapy”. It uses the same technology as Covid vaccines to prevent melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The “mRNA-4157 (V940)” vaccine helps people’s immune systems to recognize and wipe out cancerous cells, preventing melanomas from growing back. It is now entering final trials at University College London Hospital, and is also being tested on other cancers, including lung, bladder and kidney tumors.
➢ After 97-year-old Seymour Weiner went viral as the NY Mets’ Veteran of the Game on Opening Day, the Mets partnered with him, naturally, to promote “Dollar (Hot) Dog Night” on April 30 at Citi Field. Ahead of his big night, Weiner said that he was teased about his surname as a kid, but admitted that up until now, he never heard any wisecracks combining his first name and last name. Of his newfound celebrity, he said: “I couldn’t be more excited. I really can’t believe it’s happening. It’s probably one of the highlights of my life.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2p9md8mh

DID YOU KNOW?
Half the world will need glasses by 2050, says a guy who knows this kind of stuff. Rochester Institute of Technology vision scientist Andrew Herbert wrote in an article that some even consider myopia, also known as nearsightedness, an epidemic. If current trends continue, about half of the global population will need corrective lenses to offset myopia by 2050. That’s up from 23% in 2000. Recent studies show that that an important reason for the uptick in myopia is that people are spending more time focusing on objects immediately in front of our eyes, such as screens. The more time we spend focusing on something that close, known as “near work,” the greater the odds of having myopia. (Coming soon…the tablet-sized smartphone!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “International No Diet Day”, created in 1992 by UK advocacy group Diet Breakers to encourage people to appreciate the body they have. (In my case, because no one else does…)
• “Nurses Day”, raising awareness of the great contributions and commitment of nurses, and to acknowledge the vital role they play in society. National Nurses Week begins today and ends May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale (in 1820). Nurses are more likely to sustain a work-related back injury than construction workers, and they walk an average of 5 km (3 miles) per shift. (So, stop hitting the “nurse call” button so much!)
• “No Homework Day”. Not sure why — or who started it, but c’mon, teach’, let’s participate! (When’s “No Housework Day”?)
• “Tourist Appreciation Day”, a highlight of “Travel & Tourism Week”, when we’re encouraged to consider all the things tourism brings to our communities. (Let’s see … crowds, litter, traffic jams, people wearing sandals with socks …)
• “Beverage Day”, a chance to kick back with your favorite bevvy and enjoy the day. (I’ll try to have one of each…)
• “Great Lakes Awareness Day”, celebrating the Great Lakes and highlighting the issues they face, and how they can be preserved. The 5 Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie, located on the US-Canada border, make up the largest body of fresh water on Earth, ⅕ of the freshwater on the planet
• “Melanoma Monday”, to raise awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers, and encourage early detection through self-exams. Here are some ways to reduce your risk:
⇒ Wear sunscreen to protect from harmful UV rays. Reapply it throughout the day, too.
⇒ Wear a broad-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and pants. And don’t forget to cover the back of your neck.
⇒ Find shade. Trees, umbrellas, and awnings provide excellent protection on sunny days.
⇒ Don’t let the clouds fool you. UV rays still reach your skin on an overcast day.
⇒ Avoid tanning beds. The UV light there puts you at risk for melanoma, too.
⇒ Regularly check your skin for abnormal moles. If you notice changes, see a dermatologist.

BS FUNNIEST RACEHORSE NAMES (All real. Really):
• DoReMiFaSaLaTiDo – Tough to say. Tougher for the track announcer in the middle of a race.
• Maythehorsebewithu – Fair to say this horse did have the force. Darth Vader was not his father, it was, in fact, a top-class New Zealand sire.
• Ha Ha Ha – A nightmare for TV commentators to say without looking stupid, the last laugh was actually on those who named him. In a 6-race career, he finished last twice and was pulled up on 2 other occasions.
• Hoof Hearted – Say it quickly.
• Passing Wind – Another of a flatulent nature, you wouldn’t have wanted to be behind him when finishing. It is probably why he won by a ‘distance’ in both of his victories.
• Whykickamoocow – We’re not really sure how this came to light, probably a little bit too much whisky was consumed when filling in the forms. Still, absolutely hilarious when called home.
• Geespot – The naming is superb based on its pedigree. By the sire ‘Pursuit of Love’ and out of the mare ‘My Discovery’, you can only admire the creativity of the naming of this mare. Genius.
• AARRRRRRR – Clearly named on ‘Speak Like A Pirate’ Day. Possibly the only animal able to say his own name.
• ****CAUTION**** Wear The Fox Hat – Say it quickly in an Irish accent, but not at work or school (or on the radio!)
