BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Shares of entertainment companies, including Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global took a hit early yesterday, as investors assessed the potential impact on Hollywood of US President Trump’s as-yet undefined vow to impose a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films. Right now, there are more questions than answers about Trump’s movie tariffs threat. For example, Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” distributed by Paramount, was filmed primarily in the UK. It’s unclear whether the movie, which opens May 23, would be subject to new levies — or even exactly how any such tariffs would be assessed.

★ Vin Diesel won’t let up on a movie version of a classic TV show. The “Fast and Furious” star is continuing to tease a potential reboot of the crime drama “Kojak”. It ran from 1973-78, and revolved around NYPD Lieutenant Theophilus “Theo” Kojak, played by Telly Savalas. We don’t have much info about Diesel’s possible reboot, but it seems to be finally moving forward. Fans have been waiting for over 10 years for the film since it was first mentioned. (And he already has the correct hairdo!)

★ For the first time, Paramount execs are speaking out about several of the rumored “Yellowstone” spin-off shows, including one set to star ‘Beth’ and ‘’Rip, played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. Co-CEO Chris McCarthy not only spilled the working name of the show, “Dutton Ranch”, he shared that it is slated to debut this fall. News that the onscreen couple would have a new series leaked late last year, with Reilly seemingly confirming it on social media. The Beth and Rip show is one of at least 4 reported spin-offs from Yellowstone, beyond existing shows like “1883” and “1923”.

★ Mike Rowe is back with a brand new “feel-good” show that proves extraordinary people are sometimes in our own backyard. The “Dirty Jobs” host said that his new show “People You Should Know”, which focuses on people who do good in their community, is a dose of “hopefulness at a time where a lot of people have thrown up their hands.” It premiered Friday on Mike Rowe’s YouTube page.

★ Former “Sopranos” star Joe Pantoliano has announced that he’s planning to leave the US because he feels “so uncomfortable” there. He indicated that US politics was the key reason for his possible move out of the country. The actor and his wife, actress Nancy Sheppard, have discussed permanently relocating to Portugal. Should he go ahead with his plan, Pantoliano would join the list of a number of notable celebrities who have recently opted to live abroad, including Rosie O’Donnell, and Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Teddy Swims – His hit ‘Lose Control’ has been named ASCAP 2025 Pop Song of the Year. It set a record by staying in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 for 58 weeks — longer than any other song ever. Other honorees at the Songwriters Celebration coordinated by the performing rights organization included the writers of Beyoncé’s ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’, Dua Lipa’s ‘Houdini’, and Chappell Roan’s ‘Good Luck, Babe!’.
• Wiz Khalifa and Sean Paul — have announced a 2025 co-headlining “Good Vibes Only Tour” across North America this summer, featuring special guest DaBaby. The 15-date amphitheater run kicks off July 6 at the Darien Lake Amphitheater in Darien Center NY.
• Kelly Clarkson – says her new single, released on Friday, was inspired by watching “Only Murders in the Building”. In ‘Where Have You Been’, Clarkson sings about finding one’s soul mate after years spent searching, which came to her after observing the onscreen romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short’s characters.
• Fiona Apple – is back after 5 years. Tomorrow, she’ll drop ‘Let Her Go Home’. The song’s official website explains the song’s subject matter thus: “She saw so many people get caged away simply because they could not afford the bail. Pretrial. Presumed innocent.” LINK: https://lethergohome.org/
• Bruce Springsteen – In a podcast interview, he revealed he’s not a huge fan of his nickname “The Boss”. Quote: “I’ve given up and gotten used to it, I suppose.” He added that he got the name after someone heard his crew saying to him: “Hey, boss, are we getting paid this week?”
• The Who — A new book focused on their early tours of America has just been released. “Their Generation: The Who In America 1967-69” features photos from Tom Wright, the band’s official photographer and US tour manager, with a foreword by Pete Townshend.
• Kacey Musgraves — has recorded a cover of the Hank Williams’ classic ‘Lost Highway” to mark her return to Lost Highway Records as part of the reorganization of UMG Nashville. She was originally signed to the label in 2011. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3hyjzb6u
• Chris Stapleton – has dropped ‘Bad As I Used to Be’, from Brad Pitt’s new racing movie, “F1”. The film’s soundtrack also includes songs from Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Tate McRae. Oddly enough, Stapleton’s last release was “California Sober”, a Post Malone collab which appeared on the album “F-1 Trillion”.
• Rascal Flatts — Not only will they perform ‘What Hurts the Most’ with Backstreet Boys during the 60th ACM awards on Thursday, they’re also planning a “musical surprise or 2”. Meanwhile, fans can enjoy a newly posted lyric video of the new collaborative version of Rascal’s 2003 hit, which will appear on “Life Is a Highway: Refueled Duets”, out June 6. SHOOTING THE BULL
TEXT…AND PRETEXT:
This information does not bode well for about half the people on my contacts list: A new study says that excessive use of emojis by guys is an indicator of manipulative behavior. By women? That tends to indicate a desire to come off as agreeable and open. The research from Oklahoma State University and published in the journal Current Psychology, surveyed 285 undergraduates — mostly around 20 years old — asking how often they used 40 common symbols in texts and social media posts. It seems that for guys, their carefully thought-out use of emojis correlated with their self-image and a desire to manage how others perceive them. And women express their need for acceptance by including several emojis in their texts or posts. The researchers wrote: “Emoji use may be related to strategies to manipulate the perceptions of others and to present a positive impression of oneself.”
(Well, you know, nothing says “trust me” like 12 winky faces!)
(Wow, he sent a heart AND a wink. Must be husband material!)

ROOMBA FOR MORE:
I mean, sure, your Roomba vacuum does a great job of keeping your home dust and pet-hair free. But it could – and should – be doing so much more. That’s according to a group of British and Canadian scientists who managed to reprogram a robot vacuum cleaner to do a number of different household tasks, because, as they pointed out, the units are generally only in use for about 2 hours per day, and they could be doing so much more for us – with a few modifications. The scientists, from the University of Bath and University of Calgary, retrained a Roomba to do things such as charging a phone, for example. And if that’s not impressive enough, they also gave it the job of watering the plants. And playing with a cat – and assisting in a home workout. Also among the 100 functions that robot vacuums and other robotic devices could be handling for us, according to the scientists, are: providing a live monitor of what’s cooking in the oven, and carting groceries from the car to the kitchen (performed by a lawn mower).
(If it learns how to make coffee, I’m proposing to it.)
(Cool, but can it do my taxes and ghost my ex too?)

TO TELL OR SMELL:
It’s an awkward situation, and you never know quite how to react. Would YOU tell a co-worker that their breath stinks? Just 1 in 4 of us would, according to a new poll. The recent survey of 2,000 Americans by Affordable Dentures & Implants found that 86% feel that they would tell someone else about their breath issues, most likely their partner (69%), followed by friends and family members, tied at 43%. As I mentioned, it’s a little more difficult to broach that subject with a co-worker, with just 24% willing to mention breath issues to a colleague. Men were found to be more likely to be the bearers of bad breath news, with 28% willing to speak to a fellow worker about the situation, compared to 21% of women. Among friends, 45% of men would speak up, compared to 40% of women. And on a first date? Just 13% thought thy would have the nerve to speak up about bad breath. 12% said they’d cut their losses – and end the date early. And by the way, 62% said that at some point, they have been on the receiving end of that unpleasant conversation.
(12% would end a date early because of bad breath? Wow. That explains sooo much about my 20s!)
(I’m not sure I’d mention it to a co-worker…but I’m pretty handy with an anonymous Post-it!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A California prison dentist who retired last year scored a payout of over a million dollars from cashing in his thousands of hours of unused vacation time. The state of California paid prison supervising dentist George Soohoo the $1.2 million, which it said is a new record for payouts. (And in doing so, they also provided an answer to the question: “What’s more boring than being a dentist?” Answer: Being a dentist who never even goes on vacation!)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.06.25
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “No Diet Day”, created in 1992 by UK advocacy group Diet Breakers, to encourage people to appreciate the body they have. (In my case, because no one else does…)
• “Nurses Day”, raising awareness of the great contributions and commitment of nurses, and to acknowledge the vital role they play in society. National Nurses Week begins today and ends May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale (in 1820). Nurses are more likely to sustain a work-related back injury than construction workers, and they walk an average of 5km (3 miles) per shift. (So, stop hitting the “nurse call” button so much!)
• “National Teacher Day”. Today, students, parents, and others give thanks to teachers for their valuable contributions to society. The day is also used to encourage people to become teachers.
BS SIGNS YOU’RE A TEACHER:
☞ You can’t have children because there’s not a name you can think of that doesn’t give you high blood pressure.
☞ You believe ‘Shallow Gene Pool’ should have its own little check box on report cards.
☞ Your voice is permanently set on high volume.
☞ You’ve corrected a total stranger’s grammatical errors.
☞ Any sustained loud noise causes you to impulsively flick the light switch on and off.
• “No Homework Day”. Not sure why — or who started it, but c’mon, teach’, let’s participate! (When’s “No Housework Day”?)
• “Tourist Appreciation Day”, a highlight of “Travel & Tourism Week”, when we’re encouraged to consider all the things tourism brings to our communities. (Let’s see … crowds, litter, traffic jams, people wearing sandals with socks …)
• “Beverage Day”, a chance to kick back with your favorite bevvy and enjoy the day. (I’ll try to have one of each…)
• “Childhood Depression Awareness Day”, first designated by the National Mental Health Association in 1997. Also known as “Green Ribbon Day”, today we’re encouraged to wear one to create awareness.
• “Concert Day”, a day to celebrate music artists, record labels, live music industry leaders, tour managers, and their teams, who work to produce live music experiences for fans. (***Here are some of the best concerts that ever happened: https://tinyurl.com/2sjpzbu9 ***)
• “World Asthma Day”, to raise awareness and help improve the lives of the many people around the world who suffer from asthma, a common but potentially life-threatening ailment.
