BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ King Charles is sharing more information about the side effects of his cancer treatment, after being diagnosed with an unnamed form of the disease in February. During a visit to the British Army Flying Museum, the king spoke with an Army veteran, who told him that he’d lost his sense of taste while undergoing treatment for cancer last year. During their conversation, Charles confirmed he too had lost his sense of taste during treatment, though he didn’t share whether the effects were temporary. It’s purely conjecture, but TMZ is pointing out that the army vet lost his sense of taste while undergoing chemotherapy for testicular cancer.

★ Some male Hollywood stars are taking it off for a good cause. Fox has announced its 2024-2025 programming slate, and it includes “The Real Full Monty”, a 2-hour special that will see “a daring group of male celebrities” strip down to raise awareness for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer testing and research. The event, inspired by the 1997 film “The Full Monty”, will be executive produced by Anthony Anderson. He’ll bare all on the special too, leading a cast that includes James Van Der Beek, Taye Diggs, Tyler Posey, Kansas City Chiefs star Chris Jones, and “Dancing with the Stars” judge Bruno Tonioli. The logline says things will culminate with a strip-tease dance, choreographed by Mandy Moore, where they will “bare all in front of a live audience”. Look for it this fall.

★ “Downton Abbey 3” is happening. The complete cast, including newcomers, was revealed on Monday. And to further entice fans, a video has been released showing the classic Downton Abbey cast reuniting for a table read for the third film. Dominic West (“The Crown”) will reprise his role as ‘Guy Dexter’ from “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” while Paul Giamatti will be back as ‘Cora Grantham’s’ brother ‘Harold Levinson’ from the TV series. Other new additions include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan. No word yet on a title for the upcoming film.

★ It’s the end of the line for the Conner family. ABC has announced that “The Conners” will end with Season 7. The network posted a YouTube video promoting the final season, and wrote: “You’ve been part of this family for years. After 6 seasons, be there to say goodbye.” The Conners premiered in October 2018, replacing the “Roseanne” revival that premiered in March of that year. Rosanne’s revival only aired 9 episodes before it was canceled amid star Roseanne Barr’s controversial social media posts. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yjp557ae

★ The most fascinating star in this summer’s hotly anticipated crossover “Deadpool & Wolverine” might not be Ryan Reynolds or Hugh Jackman. It could be Peggy, who won the title of Britain’s ugliest dog in 2023. Peggy is believed to be a Pug and Chinese Crested mix — sometimes called a “Pugese”. She plays ‘Dogpool’ in the film – and yes, Dogpool is a real character. Peggy also has her own “Dogpool” Instagram page, and obviously, Ryan Reynolds is a big fan. When asked about ‘Deadpool’s’ bond with the dog, he called it “love at first sight.” Deadpool & Wolverine opens July 26. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/f8wrptx6

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – Her “The Tortured Poets Department” surpassed 2 million in US album sales, just 2 weeks after its release. The last album to accomplish that was Adele’s “25”, which sold 4.5 million in its first 2 weeks of release in 2015.
• Katy Perry — She’s got the eye of the tiger, still. Her 2013 ‘Roar’ music video has reached 4 billion YouTube views. That’s the most for a song by any female artist on the platform.
• Drake – asked a Toronto news station on Instagram to stop flying its helicopter above his house in the middle of the night. He wrote: “@cp24breaking news can we discuss the chopper flight times over the house cause I won’t lie I’m trying to sleep anytime after 3pm works great for me.” The flyovers are likely related numerous recent intrusion incidents at Drake’s home.
• Bruce Springsteen – June 17, he’ll celebrate the 40th anniversary of his “Born in the USA” album with a special vinyl release. Not only will it be on translucent red vinyl, it’ll also feature new liner notes and a booklet filled with goodies from the era, and a 4-color lithograph (…whatever that is).
• Elvis Costello — A new musical with a score written by him will open in London this fall. “A Face in the Crowd” is based on the 1957 movie of the same name, which starred Andy Griffith, Walter Matthau and Patricia Neal. It will run at the Young Vic theater Sept. 17-Nov. 9.
• Def Leppard — Joe Elliott says that he hates his band being called ‘metal’. The singer said on a podcast: “I have an issue with the term heavy metal because everybody outside of rock always thinks if you’re in a heavy metal band, it’s like bad news…You get this impression that everybody’s a moron.” He went on to admit, however, that Def Leppard does have “a couple of heavy metal songs.”
• 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards – NBC has announced that this year’s event will air live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Sept. 26. The network will also return for to the Opry for Little Big Town’s “Christmas at the Opry”, a 2-hour special.
• Jason Aldean – has scored his 38th Country Airplay top 10 hit as ‘Let Your Boys Be Country’ moves into the #10 spot. The only artists with more top-10s since the chart was launched in 1990 are: Kenny Chesney and George Strait (61 each), Tim McGraw (60), Alan Jackson (51), Keith Urban (44), Toby Keith (42) and Brooks & Dunn (41).
• Lainey Wilson – Why does she always wear bell-bottoms? She offered up this explanation to The Washington Post: When she was a young musician touring the CMT offices, she was looking at photos of country legends on the wall. She was told by an executive: “All the legends — you can recognize them by their silhouette.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

LIKE A SURGEON:
It’s definitely important to learn from our mistakes. But according to a new “study of failure”, even the most dedicated surgeons, at some point, stop benefiting from the knowledge that comes from their own mistakes. Awkward — especially when you are a surgeon! Researchers Sunkee Lee and Jisoo Park studied 307 surgeons performing coronary artery surgeries over a 16-year period. Initially, as expected, surgeons’ performance improved as they experienced and learned from failures. Each time a patient was lost, it provided valuable information that could be applied to future surgeries. The problem? There was a tipping point where the learning effect tapered off — and eventually reversed. That means surgeons who had experienced a high number of failures actually performed worse than those with fewer failures under their belt. The researchers think this may be because repeated failures take an emotional and psychological toll, and as failures accumulate, these negative emotions can start to drown out the motivation to learn.
(And THOSE are the surgeons who you don’t want to be selling malpractice insurance to!)
(You can insert your own Toronto Maple Leafs [***or other miserable sports team***] joke right here, if you’d like!)

NO MO’ ‘NO MOW MAY’:

Spring has sprung, and many of us are spending more time these days on yard projects, including lawn care. But you might recall in previous years that some groups put the message out that we should give the lawn mower a rest, and observe “No Mow May”. The idea was to let the flowering plants like clover and dandelions to bloom, because they are some of the earliest food available for pollinators, says the Bee Squad at the University of Minnesota. But in case you’re concerned about what the homeowner’s association might say if you left your lawn untouched for a whole month, the latest bee-friendly campaign is slightly less unsightly. The Bee Lab says the goal of “Slow Mow Summer” is to mow less frequently throughout the summer — instead of not at all in one month, thereby helping pollinators all season long.
(…as opposed to my kid, who celebrates “Slow-Mow Day” every time I ask him to cut the grass!)
(So, just to be clear, this has nothing to do with Movember, right?)

WHAT’S YOUR NAME, LITTLE GIRLS – AND BOYS:
Liam and Olivia have topped the list of most-popular names for a 5th consecutive year, among babies born in the US in 2023. The latest ‘baby-names’ list was released by the Social Security Administration on Friday. Actually, the name Liam has topped the boys list for 7 years now, and Olivia for 5. Following Liam, the most common names for boys are, in order: Noah, Oliver, James, Elijah, Mateo (in the top 10 for the first time), Theodore, Henry, Lucas, and William. After Olivia, the most popular names for girls are: Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Ava, Evelyn and Luna. The fastest rising name for boys is Izael, and the second fastest rising is Chozen. (The Netflix show “Cobra Kai” featured a character with that name in its last season.) For girls, one of the fastest rising baby names is Kaeli. There is a YouTube and TikTok star named Kaeli McEwen.
(This is interesting and all, but what I REALLY want to see is the list of the LEAST common names given to kids. Because these days, parents are coming up with some doozies!)
(Just be thankful that we haven’t seen a bunch of girls named “Stormy” – yet!)

ESSENTIAL SAFETY ITEMS EVERYONE SHOULD KEEP IN THEIR CAR:
According to a consultation of 8 safety guides…
⇒ First Aid Kit: Accidents happen, and having basic medical supplies on hand can help you address minor injuries or provide temporary relief until professional help arrives.
⇒ Phone Charger and Battery Charger: A working cell phone is vital during emergencies. A phone charger ensures your device stays powered up, and a portable charger could recharge your phone if you’re unable to access a power outlet. (Also, an emergency would be infinitely worse if you have to listen to your teen whine about their phone being dead the entire time you’re trying to save your family!)
⇒ Flashlight: A reliable flashlight can be a lifesaver during nighttime emergencies, or when you need to inspect your car in low light conditions. (Ever try to change a flat tire at night…using just the glow of the interior light?)
⇒ Jumper Cables: Whether your own battery is drained, or you need to come to the aid of another driver in need, jumper cables can help you get back on the road quickly. (And they’re cheap!)
⇒ Spare Tire: A flat tire can happen anytime, anywhere, so it’s essential to have a spare — and the necessary tools to change it. Regularly check your spare tire’s condition and inflation.
⇒ Blanket: In cold weather or emergency situations, a blanket can provide warmth and comfort until help arrives.
⇒ Water and Non-Perishable Snacks: Staying hydrated and nourished is essential during unexpected delays or emergencies. Keep a supply of bottled water and snacks, such as granola bars or nuts, in your car. (Oh, believe me: If I’m driving, there are snacks in the car!)
(OK, what did they miss? Besides sand and a shovel, I mean…)

DID YOU KNOW?
A Texas man reclaimed his Guinness World Record — by going skydiving at the age of 106 years (and 327 days). Al Blaschke first earned the title of the oldest person to tandem skydive when he jumped out of a plane at age 103 in 2020, but his record was broken by a Swedish woman, who was 103 years and 259 days old when she went skydiving. After recapturing the title, Blaschke had this advice for…well, everybody: “If you think you can’t, you’re just underestimating yourself. Everyone is more capable than they think. They just need to make the decision to try.” (On one hand, I’m thinking: “How hard could it be? All you gotta do is fall.” On the other hand, there’s no conceivable way on earth I’d be able to jump out of an airplane!)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.14.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Brioche Day”, celebrating the sweet, luxurious decadence that comes with the true French bakery classic. Brioche is a pastry whose high egg and butter content gives it a rich and tender crumb. Whether you use a brioche bun for a gourmet burger, use a slice of brioche loaf to add a Parisian twist to jam and toast, or try something a little avant garde, like a brioche waffle, treat yourself today. (Brioche, please!)
• “Dance Like a Chicken Day”, Everybody do the chicken dance now: “Dadda dadda dadda dah, dadda dadda dadda dah, dadda dadda dadda dah duh duh duh duh…”
• “Buttermilk Biscuit Day”. Before the American Civil War, biscuits emerged as an inexpensive addition to meals. This sturdier bread product soon became popular as people realized it absorbed the gravy on their plate better than plain bread. Soon, the new family favorite, ‘biscuits and gravy’, was created.
• “Underground America Day”, to honor the 6,000 or so North Americans who make their homes not only on the Earth — but in it. Underground America Day began in 1974, when architect Malcolm Wells came up with the idea.
• “Dylan Thomas Day”, celebrating the life and work of the Welsh writer and poet whose best-known pieces include the poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” and the play “Under Milk Wood”. It is celebrated on the anniversary of the 1953 first reading of Under Milk Wood. The International Dylan Thomas Prize is awarded during the week. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/46324tj2
• “Stars and Stripes Forever Day” (in the US), the anniversary of the first public performance of ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’, on May 14, 1897. That happened in Philadelphia, on the occasion of the unveiling of a statue of George Washington.

TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
➠ The head of the World Bank says there’s a global recession coming. (Then he went back to petting his hairless cat and laughing maniacally…)
➠ There was an earthquake reported in New Jersey last week. (No reports of injury, but several Hot Tubs slid off their foundations!)
➠ A clothing company once developed a shirt that can be worn 100 days straight without developing any odors. (Now it’s just a matter of introducing it to the guys who work at GameStop…!)
➠ The NFL draft wrapped up last week. (My team is going to suck. They spent their only Draft pick on Miller Genuine…)
➠ Fact of the Day: The words “idiot,” “imbecile,” and “moron” were once clinical terms to describe IQ ranges. An idiot had an IQ under 20, an imbecile between 21-50, and a moron had an IQ of 51-70. (So — all this time I was calling Rudy Giuliani a moron . . . when, in reality, he was just an idiot!)
