Monthly Planning Calendar in Today’s BS!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Acting couple Evan Rachel Wood (“The Wrestler”) & Jamie Bell (“Jane Eyre”) have split after 19 months of marriage, a spokesperson has confirmed. The couple have a 10-month-old son who will reportedly be cared for via shared custody. It’s been speculated that Evan’s sexuality could have put a strain on the marriage. The 26-year-old came out in 2012 and now openly identifies as bisexual. She’s even named actress Milla Jovovich as one of her crushes.
– “Us Weekly”
★ Director Colin Trevorrow has now confirmed that leaked plot details about the upcoming movie reboot “Jurassic World” are essentially accurate. It seems “Jurassic World” is to be an actual theme park, complete with monorail, souvenir shops, and even a ‘dinosaur petting zoo’. Everything is going tickety-boo until the park’s staff ill-advisedly use gene-splicing to fuse together a monstrous new dinosaur.

★ There was an uproar among “Community” fans when NBC-TV cancelled Dan Harmon’s quirky comedy series. The problem has been that the devoted cult following has failed to translate into the kind of viewing figures NBC would like. But now streaming service Hulu is in talks with Sony Pictures Entertainment about bringing the show back for a 6th season online. The same strategy was used to resurrect “Arrested Development” on Netflix, with mixed results.

NEW WAY TO TRACK MUSIC:
Twitter has partnered with “Billboard” magazine to launch ‘Twitter Real-Time Charts’, which measure the popularity of songs by scanning Twitter interactions to music-listening platforms like Spotify or iTunes. The service consists of 2 real-time charts: ‘Trending 140’, which measures the frequency a song has been shared over the past hour; and ‘Twitter Emerging Artists’, which ranks songs from artists with less than 50,000 Twitter followers. The service is the latest attempt by the social network to connect with mainstream entertainment. Last year it debuted the ‘Nielson TV Twitter Rating’ system, which measures the popularity of TV shows.

NOW THERE’S VAPE HACKING:
Trying to keep up with this new vaping fad? Wacky flavors like ‘Thin Mint’ are a huge part of the culture that has cropped up around nicotine vaporizers, but it doesn’t stop there. In addition to creating their own custom flavors, vapers like to tamper with the insides of their devices to make what are called ‘mods’ (as in ‘modifieds’). Vape shops do a robust business in ‘rebuildable’ devices, while the Internet offers endless YouTube videos and forum posts explaining how to alter the atomizer to get a stronger flavor or tweak the battery to get a deeper puff. Here’s a video to post for bewildered parents that outlines what this is all about …

SMART BALLS:
The World Cup kicks off in just 2 weeks. If making it to Brazil for the big event isn’t in the cards, you might try the next best thing and fine-tune your fútbol skills. That’s where the new ‘Adidas miCoach Smart Ball’ comes in. It has a built-in sensor that measures spin, velocity, and trajectory of your dead ball kicks, and the companion app offers tips on how to improve them. The miCoach is not only a great training tool but also an excellent soccer ball. According to Adidas, pros couldn’t tell the difference between the size 5, 32-panel miCoach ball and standard tournament balls. (Why not hook this up to a TV screen readout? “And Rinaldo kicks a 60 km/hr, counter-clockwise spinning corner kick directly into the penalty area …”)

WHY DOES BACON SMELL SO GOOD?
It’s a fact that nothing will get your mouth watering like the smell of bacon cooking. But why? The simplified version is this: When you throw bacon in the pan it undergoes something called the Maillard Reaction, which is what causes foods to turn brown and gives it its flavor. With sizzling bacon, the process causes sugars to react with amino acids. That reaction, combined with the meat’s melting fats, produces the aroma compounds that make you salivate more than Pavlov’s dog after a bell. (Now, about cinnamon buns …)

BS AMAZING FACTS:
‘Bertha’, ‘Cecil’, ‘Fanny’, ‘Gertrude’, ‘Gladys’, ‘Marjorie’, ‘Muriel’, ‘Rowland’, and ‘Willie’ are now “extinct” names in the UK, meaning they have not been recorded in the latest record of births.  Stats show people named ‘Eleanor’ are disproportionately likely to get into Oxford University.
