BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Fresh off his highly-publicized defamation trial with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance Sunday at a Jeff Beck concert in England. Depp joined Beck on stage to perform their 2020 collab ‘Isolation’, a remake of John Lennon’s 1970 song. The pair also performed a cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’. In addition to his film career, Depp is a notable guitarist and a member of the band Hollywood Vampires, alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. This Depp sighting came just 2 days after lawyers delivered closing arguments in his $50 million defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. LINK: https://youtu.be/E1zP306fG5k

★ Austin Butler is receiving a lot of praise for his role as ‘Elvis Presley’ in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic, out in June. Not only are critics praising his performance, the 30-year-old has gotten rave reviews from Elvis’ former wife, Priscilla Presley and daughter, Lisa Marie. In a new interview, Butler said that the positive response from Lisa Marie, “brought me to tears.” Earlier this month, Lisa Marie took to Instagram to share her thoughts about the film, calling it “nothing short of spectacular” and “absolutely exquisite.” In the interview, Butler said: “I want everybody to love the film, obviously, but the pressure I have really felt is doing justice to Elvis.”

★ Alexis Bledel, who has played ‘Emily’ on “The Handmaid’s Tale” since the Emmy-winning Hulu series launched in 2017, is exiting ahead of the upcoming fifth season. In a statement, she said she felt she “had to” step away “after much thought”. Bledel has received 4 Emmy nominations and one win for outstanding guest actress for her portrayal of the key character. Season 5 is expected to premiere later this year.

His best-known roles include parts in 2000 film “High Fidelity”, 2003’s “School of Rock” and more recently in the “Jumanji” franchise. BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Cardi B – She and Megan Thee Stallion suited up in football gear at the Los Angeles Chargers practice field for the newest episode of “Cardi Tries”. • Katy Perry – jokes that she has been sent a “bajillion” country music songs over the course of her career, but says ‘Where We Started’, her new collaboration with Thomas Rhett, which they performed during the series finale of “American Idol” is “the one I was meant to start with to cross over into this world.” She says, however, that she has no plans to record a full country album any time soon.
• Jane’s Addiction – guitarist Dave Navarro has opened up about his battle with “long COVID”, a few weeks after the group was forced to pull the Welcome To Rockville festival. On Instagram, he wrote: “Been sick since December and supposedly will be back to my old self in… nobody knows how long.”
• Red Hot Chilli Peppers — bassist Flea plays a bounty hunter in the new Star Wars series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, which began airing on Disney+ Friday. As the villain ‘Vect Nokru’, his character is hired to kidnap a young ‘Princess Leia’. LINK: https://youtu.be/SZpb0WkUrSY
• Darius Rucker, Ashley McBryde and Cole Swindell – have all joined the lineup for CMA Fest’s Spotify House June 9-12. Also among the nearly 50 acts scheduled to perform: Breland, Mickey Guyton, Darius Rucker, Lainey Wilson, Midland and Jelly Roll.
• Eric Church – has shared a video recap of his recently-completed 9-month 51-city “Gather Again” tour. He wrote: “I remember everybody said that we were crazy for going on tour, and I can absolutely say that we were. But we were the right kind of crazy.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/267yp39f
• Garth Brooks – at a Massachusetts concert, a fan held up a sign reading: “Bangor, Maine 1992: I’ve saved your guitar pick for 30 years! Need it back?” In a video, Brooks tells Jessica Cloukey she can keep the pick, then goes one better, handing over his guitar, with the crowd passing it to her. After the show, Cloukey got to go backstage, where Brooks signed the guitar for her. LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8LUUSfvGLU

SHOOTING THE BULL

DOG’S BREAKFAST:
It seems that lately, we’re all trying to cut back on expenses due to rising prices on essentials such as gas and groceries. And while that may mean we’re willing to cheap out a little bit at the supermarket, it doesn’t mean we’ll do the same thing when it comes to feeding our pets. The CEO of Petco says the fact that pet owners are unwilling to buy cheap food has actually boosted sales. Ron Coughlin said on Yahoo Finance Live “Just like you don’t cut back on milk or eggs, pet parents don’t cut back on food for their pets. In fact, what we’re seeing is upgrading of foods, continued premiumization toward the most premium kibbles, fresh frozen foods.” Also helping sales for pet supply companies: The pandemic. Stats show that nearly 2 million animals were adopted in the US in 2020. That’s a lot of mouths to feed. What’s more, Coughlin said that the majority of those new pets were adopted by Gen Zers and millennials who “spend more on their pets. They humanize their pets even more.”
(Then they thank us by stealing the roast you left cooling on the counter…)
(It’s a way of thanking them for all those years of “eating their homework” for them!)

SUNDAE SCHOOL:
Ice cream season has definitely begun, and we saw the stat last week that says you’ll enjoy the stuff about 40 times this summer. And while we all love the classics – who can resist a tower of soft serve, or a heaping hot fudge sundae – a reporter in New York headed out with the mission to find the most intriguing, kooky confections in the city. Here are some highlights . . .
• Olive Oil Chocolate Eggplant: Grove and Vine olive oil and baked eggplant slices are improbably blended with dark chocolate.
• Cardamom Lemon Jam: Made by churning cardamom-infused milk into ice cream. A swirl of sugary lemon preserves yields chewy, candy-like fragments.
• Pandan: This elegant elixir takes its deep green color from herbaceous tropical pandan leaves.
• All-Inclusive: A rice pudding ice cream packed with aromatic plantain segments and mango gelée.
• Mrs. Robinson’s Neighborhood: Summer squash ice cream is textured with zucchini breadcrumbs, and spiced with pickled ginger.
• Guacamole: Some spices are added to the avocado to evoke guacamole. (Great, now avocado can give you brain-freeze, as well as a slit finger!)
• Breakfast Trash: Cap’n Crunch, Frosted Flakes and Corn Pops cereals are “infused” into a malty vanilla base, further ruined with Froot Loops and Fruity Pebbles. (I don’t think he liked that one!)
(I’m OK with any kind of ice cream – as long as I can smother it with about a pound of caramel sauce!)

FOR THE RECORD:
⇒ The man who holds the Guinness Record for most squares tattooed on his body — 848 – has added a few more, plus a special Guinness tattoo. Matt Gone was awarded the title in 2014. Among the places he’s had ink done are his tongue, his eyeballs (which are now a striking shade of magenta with gold), and the most painful spot, according to him — the nose. In a new video from Guinness, he claims to have added 20-30 more squares to his body in the form of various flags. LINK: https://youtu.be/2rHvK5hdvak
⇒ A California man put his love of spicy food to the limit when he broke a Guinness World Record by downing 3 Carolina Reaper chili peppers in 8.72 seconds. Gregory Foster was attempting the record at the in San Diego, and ended up eating 6 of the super-hot peppers when his first attempt was disqualified. The Carolina Reaper pepper has an average of 1.64 million Scoville Heat Units, compared to 2,500-8,000 for the average jalapeno. (I’ve got a feeling he broke a few more records the next day!)
⇒ A British man spent 36 hours rocking back and forth on a swing set to break a Guinness World Record. 51-year-old Richard Scott of Kinross started swinging at 6:10 a.m. on a Saturday at Loch Leven’s Larder cricket pitch and finished Sunday evening. His 36-hour swinging marathon broke the record of 34 hours, which was set in October 2020. (Impressive, but not quite as exciting as those first 2!)

THE MOST QUINTESSENTIAL 1980s MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS:
The producers of “Top Gun: Maverick” didn’t take chances when it came to its soundtrack: They enlisted Lady Gaga for the new song ‘Hold My Hand’, to fulfill the role that ‘Take My Breath Away’ served in the original. And, yes, they also included Kenny Loggins’ ‘Danger Zone’ for throwback purposes. Here are the best soundtracks from the 1980s . . .
1. “Top Gun” (1986):  Of course. This s/t is part of pop culture, including ‘Danger Zone’, ‘Take My Breath Away’, and, of course, ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’.
2. “Purple Rain” (1984): It lofted Prince to superstardom on the strength of songs like ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘Beautiful Ones’, ‘Darling Nikki’, and one of the most unusual #1s of all time – ‘When Doves Cry’.
3. “Do the Right Thing” (1989): Heard blasting out of Radio Raheem’s boombox at key moments throughout the film: Public Enemy’s ‘Fight the Power’, Guy’s ‘My Fantasy’ and E.U.’s ‘Party Hearty’.
4. John Hughes movies: As the king of teen angst, John Hughes had plenty of memorable music moments in his films, so we’re forced to lump them all together. Think: “The Breakfast Club”, “Pretty in Pink”, “Weird Science”, “Sixteen Candles” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” – too many great music moments to list.
5. “Flashdance” (1983): The video clips for the two #1 songs from the movie — ‘Flashdance… What a Feeling’ by Irena Cara and ‘Maniac’ by Michael Sembello were played relentlessly on the new music video channel, MTV.
6. “Repo Man” (1984): It helped bring mainstream recognition to numerous L.A. punk bands featured on the soundtrack: Fear, the Circle Jerks, the Plugz, Suicidal Tendencies and, the most L.A. punk of them all, Black Flag.
7. “Footloose” (1984): Kenny Loggins again. Plus, ‘Let’s Hear It for the Boy’, ‘Alost Paradise’, and ‘Holding Out for a Hero’. “Cut loose” indeed…
8. “Less Than Zero” (1987): A delightfully unpredictable hodge-podge, including Public Enemy, The Bangles, Slayer and Roy Orbison. And LL Cool J’s ‘Going Back to Cali’. Tasty.
9. “Dirty Dancing” (1987): You knew this would be here. ‘(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life’ playing while Jennifer Grey dances with Patrick Swayze is iconic enough, but add a bunch of on-theme oldies, Eric Carmen’s ‘Hungry Eyes’ and Swayze’s own hit ‘She’s Like the Wind’, for good measure.
10. “Fame” (1980): Long before “Glee,” this musical about New York’s famed High School of the Performing Arts helped ensure the 80s live forever. The title track, by Irene Cara, earned an Oscar, and ‘Out Here on My Own’, also performed by Cara, captured teen angst beautifully.

DID YOU KNOW?
It seems jumping worms have invaded California. According to local reports, the worms, officially known as Asian jumping worms, can clone themselves and jump about a foot in the air. Scientists are concerned that the “invasive species”, which have also been called ‘crazy snake worms’, ‘Alabama jumpers’, and ‘Jersey wrigglers’, could hurt biodiversity in nurseries, parks, and gardens. A California Department of Food and Agriculture report says Asian jumping worms are “extremely active, aggressive, and have voracious appetites. They “thrash immediately when handled…more like a threatened snake than a worm.” Scientists say they are uncertain what a possible infestation might look like. (But if you see a bunch of worms that are jumping a foot in the air, there’s a pretty good chance that’s it!)

TODAY’S REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “National Smile Day”, You’ve probably heard that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile. Babies smile about 400 times a day. The average adult? About 20 times. Today, help fix that by smiling as much as possible. (Here’s why: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/smiling-benefits_n_6598840 )
• “Macaroon Day”, honoring those ooey-gooey coconut cookies that stick to your fillings.
• “Save Your Hearing Day”, something older people often advise younger people to do. But most don’t listen until they reach the point when they can’t. (***See “Today’s Record”, below***)
• “Speak in Complete Sentences Day”, a good excuse to bring up our pet peeve about newscasters who write sentences without active verbs, i.e.: “Police searching for suspects in a kidnapping today.” (NOT a complete sentence [ha!])
• “World No-Tobacco Day”, as declared by the UN’s World Health Organization to encourage people to kick their butts. (I quit smoking cold turkey. And started putting it on my sandwiches instead…)
• “National Meditation Day”, to partake in this mental exercise of private devotion. It uses the techniques of concentration and contemplation to attain spiritual awareness and purification, and to calm the body and mind. (I tried to get a job teaching meditation, but I didn’t have a good inner view!)
• “National Autonomous Vehicle Day”, to honor the advances in the autonomous vehicle industry and to recognize the potential opportunities in changing the way the we travel. (As long as they don’t run into any obstacles…)
