BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A court in Paris has found French actor Gérard Depardieu guilty of sexually assaulting 2 women on a film set in 2021, and handed him an 18-month suspended prison sentence. In one of the highest-profile #MeToo cases to come before judges in France, Depardieu repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and his lawyer said he would appeal the decision. The 76-year-old, a towering figure in French cinema, starred in more than 200 films over 5 decades, including “Green Card,” “The Last Metro” and “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

★ The Cannes Film Festival has issued an updated red carpet dress code that effectively bans full nudity and “voluminous” ensembles ahead of the start of the 2025 edition. On its official charter, the festival posted: “For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.” It also mentions that garments “with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.” Cannes warned that festival teams will “prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.”
-HollywoodReporter
★ “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor Samuel French has died at the age of 45. French starred as Agent ‘CJ Robinson’ in the Martin Scorsese-directed film, fronted by Leonardo DiCaprio. His friend Paul Sinacore, the director of Samuel’s final film “Towpath”, which is yet to be released, was the first to share the news of his death. He told Hollywood Reporter that Samuel, “battled a cancer that spread through his body over the past couple of years”.

★ Jude Law and Andrew Garfield are set to executive produce and play Las Vegas showman-magicians Siegfried and Roy in the new limited series “Wild Things”. Based on the Apple original podcast “Wild Things: Siegfried & Roy”, the 8-episode series “tells the wild ride relationship tale of 2 of the greatest showman-magicians in history who, along with their white tigers, are tasked with turning Sin City into a family-friendly destination”. The logline also says: “The duo pushes the concept of illusion versus reality to the extreme, personally and professionally, until tragedy …opens a mystery surrounding their last fateful Las Vegas show.”
-Deadline
★ The stars of “The Paper” are sharing what “The Office” fans can expect from their spinoff. During NBCUniversal’s Upfront, Oscar Nuñez, Domhnall Gleeson, and Sabrina Impacciatore screened a short clip from the series. The mockumentary, created by Office showrunner Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, sees the camera crew who memorialized the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company turn their attention to a failing Midwestern newspaper called “The Truth Teller”, where ‘Oscar Nuñez’ now works. And while their involvement in the project hasn’t been officially confirmed, fellow Office alum star Angela Kinsey confirmed last month that she had visited the show’s set with co-star Jenna Fischer.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Doja Cat – said her new album “Vie” will “fully encapsulate” the ’70s and ’80s – with some modern twists. Doja admitted she has done songs in the past just to be popular, and this time wanted to experiment with the genres that she loves, including jazz, neo soul, indie and rock.  music. The album is expected by summer.
• Miley Cyrus – Billy Ray Cyrus posted that he and his daughter are “so close to full healing”. They are believed to have been estranged since he split from her mom, Tish Cyrus, 3 years ago. • Shakira – told Jimmy Fallon that her smash hit ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ almost didn’t make it onto the album. She had completed work on 2005’s “Oral Fixation, Vol. 2”, but then got into the studio with Wylcef Jean, and they knew they had a hit on their hands. She called her record company boss and begged him to pull the LP so the extra tune could be added.
• Jack White, Iggy Pop, Sex Pistols, and The Damned – are among the artists confirmed for New York punk and hardcore all-dayer CBGB Festival. Taking place on Sept. 27 in Brooklyn, the event is described on its website as “a festival for uplifting gourmandizers”. LINK: https://cbgbfest.com/

SHOOTING THE BULL

COME FLY WITH ME:
❑ The world’s first mass-produced flying car, the AirCar, has just been unveiled by Slovakia’s Klein Vision. Revealed at the 2025 Living Legends of Aviation Gala, where even Prince Harry got a look, the AirCar can switch from car to plane in under 2 minutes. It has already clocked over 170 flight hours and more than 500 takeoffs and landings, with a Certificate of Airworthiness in hand. Expected to cost $750-940K, the first models, with a top speed of 120mph (193kph), should be available in early 2026. Klein Vision’s founder, Stefan Klein, calls it a dream come true — blending road and sky into a new kind of travel. (So… 2026: the year my neighbors start complaining about “low-flying sedans”!)
❑ A Polish company called Volonaut says it has built something straight out of “Star Wars” — a real-life flying speeder bike. Their new creation, the AirBike, is a sleek, one-person vehicle that can supposedly fly up to 200kph (124mph). Unlike typical drones or hoverbikes, it doesn’t use propellers. Instead, it’s powered by jet propulsion, and stabilized by a smart flight computer that lets it hover and stay easy to control. Inventor Tomasz Patan spent months refining the design, finally achieving stable flight in May 2023. Details are still scarce, though — no word yet on when it’ll be sold — or for how much. CLEAN, GREEN MACHINE:
Doing the right thing for the environment often requires extra work. Biking or walking to the store, for example, is less carbon intensive than driving. But that’s not the case when it comes to one of the most-dreaded of household chores: washing dishes. Researchers at the University of Michigan compared cleaning dishes in the sink with multiple hand-washing methods. It found that in most cases, the dishwasher is more efficient than hand-washing. How so? Dishwashers re-use water by spraying it at your dishes repeatedly. Dishwashers were found not only to use half the greenhouse gas emissions, and less than half the water that hand-washing does, they also kill more bacteria.
(Wow. And I didn’t think I’d owned a “green” dishwasher since the ‘80s!)
(Good to know I’ve been exhausting myself and the planet at the same time!)

NO KIDNEY? NO KIDDING:
Earlier this week, we learned that over half of us would shave years off our own lives if we could give that time to our pets. Now comes THIS little reality check: A new survey says that FEWER than half of us would donate an organ for a loved one. A loved person, that is. The study of 2,000 adults in the US found that just 39% would be willing to donate an organ to family or friends. The good news is that some of do have a benevolent side. The poll also found that 53% would go through the pure hell that is waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles for someone they care about. And 62% said they’d put their reputation on the line by acting as a reference for a loved one’s apartment or job application.
(Well, 53% would brave the DMV, which is basically donating your soul, so that counts, right?)
(Bottom line? If you’re not on 4 legs and covered in fur, don’t ask me for a kidney…)

WHAT’S YOUR NAME, LITTLE GIRLS – AND BOYS:
The most popular baby names for 2024 are in, and some familiar names have come out on top, again. Every year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) releases a list of the top 1,000 baby names in the US — just in time for Mother’s Day. Last year, once again, Olivia and Liam claimed the top spots for girls and boys, making it 6 years in a row for both. Emma and Noah weren’t far behind, hanging on to second place. Here’s the full list for 2024…
BOYS:                         GIRLS:
1. Liam                       1. Olivia
2. Noah                      2. Emma
3. Oliver                     3. Amelia
4. Theodore               4. Charlotte
5. James                     5. Mia
6. Henry                     6. Sophia
7. Mateo                     7. Isabella
8. Elijah                      8. Evelyn
9. Lucas                      9. Ava
10. William                10. Sofia (different spelling)
FYI, in 2024, the name ‘Ailany’ — which means “chief” — rose the most in terms of popularity for baby girls. For boys, ‘Truce’ — which means “peace” — rose in popularity the most.
(This is interesting and all, but what I REALLY want to see is the list of the LEAST common names given to kids. Because these days, parents are coming up with some doozies!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Narcissists actually enjoy being trash-talked and the subject of negative gossip. According to research published in the academic journal Self and Identity, 15% of people would rather be trash-talked behind their backs than not mentioned at all. For these people, identified as having narcissistic traits, social invisibility is a fate worse than being badmouthed. The results challenge the long-held assumption that people universally prefer not to be the subject of gossip.
(That explains so much about that troll on your friends list that you’re not quite sure why you haven’t blocked him yet…)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.14.25

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Brioche Day”, celebrating the sweet, luxurious decadence that comes with this true French bakery classic. Brioche is a pastry whose high egg and butter content gives it a rich and tender crumb. Whether you use a brioche bun for a gourmet burger, use a slice of brioche loaf to add a Parisian twist to jam and toast, or try something a little avant-garde, like a brioche waffle, treat yourself today. (Brioche, please!)
• “Dance Like a Chicken Day”. Everybody do the chicken dance now: “Dadda dadda dadda dah, dadda dadda dadda dah, dadda dadda dadda dah duh duh duh duh…”

• “Buttermilk Biscuit Day”. Before the American Civil War, biscuits emerged as an inexpensive addition to meals. This sturdier bread product soon became popular as people realized it absorbed the gravy on their plate better than plain bread. Soon, the new family favorite, ‘biscuits and gravy’, was created.
• “Underground America Day”, to honor the 6,000 or so North Americans who make their homes not only on the Earth — but in it. Underground America Day began in 1974, when architect Malcolm Wells came up with the idea.
• “Dylan Thomas Day”, celebrating the life and work of the Welsh writer and poet whose best-known pieces include the poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” and the play “Under Milk Wood”. It is celebrated on the anniversary of the 1953 first reading of Under Milk Wood. The International Dylan Thomas Prize is awarded during the week. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/46324tj2
• “Stars and Stripes Forever Day” (in the US), the anniversary of the first public performance of ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’, on May 14, 1897. That happened in Philadelphia, on the occasion of the unveiling of a statue of George Washington.
