Good Morning, Sheetheads!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Nathan “Doggface” Apodaca, who became an internet sensation thanks to a TikTok video of him skateboarding to Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’, is giving back to his local community of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He had his first-ever meet and greet on Sunday when he appeared at the Lionheart Mixed Martial Arts Studio. $20 tickets gave the buyer a picture with Apodaca, with a portion of proceeds going to Lionheart Martial Arts to help them recover from the pandemic. Nathan was born in the city and has lived there his whole life. He even works at the local potato plant.

★ Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis have called off their engagement after seven years. The “Booksmart” director and the former “Saturday Night Live” star first began dating after meeting at an “SNL” finale party in 2011. According to a report, the split is “amicable and they’ve transitioned into a great co-parenting routine.” Wilde and Sudeikis are parents to 6-year-old son Otis Alexander, and daughter Daisy Josephine, who is 4.

★ Expect wait staff to fight over who gets to serve Donnie Wahlberg the next time he walks into a restaurant. That’s to be expected after he recently left a $2,020 tip on a $35 bill after dining in Plymouth, Massachusetts, near his hometown of Boston. The restaurant owner said that Wahlberg always asks for the same server when he eats there, and enjoyed his normal order: steak tips with some grilled asparagus and some poached eggs. His favorite server, Denise, shared the tip with her co-workers.

★ Donald Trump bullied his way into “Home Alone 2: Lost In New York”, according to director Chris Columbus. He says he didn’t initially plan on including a scene featuring the future U.S. president in the 1992 holiday classic, starring Macaulay Culkin, but the cameo was a condition of renting the lobby of The Plaza Hotel. Columbus said that Trump said that even though the fee was paid, “The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie.” His cameo in Home Alone 2 grabbed headlines at Christmas last year after officials at Canada’s CBC edited out his appearance in the film, sparking outrage from his supporters.

The 76-year-old had been considering a live comeback for the past few years, following his reunion with Led Zeppelin in 2007, and says he is “worried” about the future of the arts, especially what the lack of opportunities to perform live will do to up-and-coming artists.

GOVERNMENT(’S) HAND OUT:
A German bank says those who work from home should pay a tax for the privilege of doing so. In its report on how to rebuild the economy after COVID-19, experts at Deutsche Bank, whose network spans 58 countries, say that white collar staff who are reaping the financial benefits of working from home should be taxed 5% of their daily income, which could raise tens of billions of dollars for governments. That money could then be used to help lower-income workers who have taken on greater risk because their jobs can’t be done remotely. According to them, those who are able to work from home benefit from convenience and flexibility, and save money because they don’t have to pay for commuting, takeout lunches, or buying and dry-cleaning work clothes. They say the tax would amount to just over $10 a day for the average American working from home, roughly the amount they might spend on commuting, lunch and laundry, which would leave them no worse off than going to the office. The tax would raise about $48 billion in the US.
(But what about the costs incurred while working from home? Like…wear and tear on my couch – I mean my office furniture — for example?)
(Awesome. Now I can lose my shirt at home two completely different ways!)
(It’s funny because now I’ll have to claim work-from-home income AND claim I’ve been working!)

SUPPLEMENTAL EVIDENCE:
New research says that it’s possible that the benefits of taking vitamin supplements could be entirely due to the placebo effect. In their report, Harvard researchers note that no clinical trial has shown consistent or considerable benefits for daily supplement users who are healthy and without a preexisting vitamin or mineral deficiency. The study of almost 5,000 regular consumers of multivitamin or mineral supplements found that although 30% of them believed they had better overall health than non-users, an analysis of medical data showed their health was “no different” from that of non-users. The researchers concluded that those who take vitamins tend to be positive-thinking people, but supplements are a waste of money for individuals with no known nutrient deficiencies.
(So vitamins have no benefit? Even if you eat a diet like mine?)
(I don’t take vitamins – but I have B4!)
(I’m happy to hear this, because placebos HAVE to be cheaper than vitamins!)

INVENTIVE INVENTIONS:
➢ An engineer who helped develop Amazon’s Alexa has created an app to translate cat meows into human words. Javier Sanchez of the tech company “Akvelon” is still fine-tuning “MeowTalk”, which he says will tell owners which of the nine different intents their cat is vocalizing, such as “I’m hungry”, Let me out” or “I’m in pain”. It works by recording the cat’s meows onto the app, then producing a translation of the sound. A prototype of the app is now available. (I’m pretty sure I’ll find my cat uses a lot of ‘foul’ language – which I suppose would actually be “feline” language, now that I think about it!)
➢ For the next time you’ve had one too many, scientists have come up with the answer: a sobering-up machine. The device, about the size of a briefcase, enables people to expel large amounts of alcohol via their breath. It works by pumping air with high levels of carbon dioxide through a facemask, which allows the inebriated person to breathe more heavily and rapidly without feeling light-headed or fainting. By doing so, they release more alcohol in their breath, halving their blood-alcohol reading in about 45 minutes, three times faster than normal. The problem? It costs $20,000. (After the week I’ve had, I’ll take TWO!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Researchers have used science to determine that “The Office” is the funniest TV show on the planet. A study of the reactions of 120 UK TV-watching volunteers (tough gig) found that the American version of The Office provided the most giggles, with one minute and 34 seconds of laughter per hour. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine came second at 1:38, followed. In order, by “Community”, “Parks and Recreation”, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, “Arrested Development’, “Friends”, “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men.” Last on the list? “The Big Bang Theory”, which, despite winning loads of awards, was found to be least funny, with an average of six seconds of laughter per hour.
