BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ CBS has scored a Super Bowl touchdown in November. The network is “virtually sold out” of all its Super Bowl advertising inventory, according to a company spokesperson, finishing a process that often isn’t completed until the final hours before the game kicks off in February. CBS has been seeking $6.5 million to $7 million for a 30-second ad, according to those familiar with negotiations. Fox secured around $600 million in advertising tied to its broadcast of Super Bowl LVII earlier this year — an event that boasted record viewership.

★ After releasing her memoir “The Woman In Me” just a week ago, it’s official: Britney Spears has sold more than 1 million copies of her book, and it’s among the best-selling celebrity memoirs in recent years. According to publisher, Gallery Books, The Woman in Me sold 1.1 million copies combined in all formats in the US during its first week on sale. For comparison, The New York Times says that in their first week on sale, Prince Harry’s memoir raked in sales of 1.6 million copies in the US, and former President Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, sold 1.4 million copies of her 2020 book.

★ Some big news for fans of “Yellowstone”. The show’s final chapter, the second half of its 5th season, will premiere on Paramount Network in November 2024, it has been announced. In addition, the Yellowstone universe is expanding with another prequel, working title “1944”. And the previously announced contemporary spinoff series is now expected to carry on with the title “2024”. That show will premiere following the conclusion of Yellowstone. Matthew McConaughey is expected to headline 2024, joined by actors from the original series.

★ Meg Ryan says her new rom-com with David Duchovny might not be for younger demographics. The flick follows 2 exes, who are stuck together for the first time in years after they are snowed in overnight at an airport, leaving them hours to discuss why they didn’t work out. During a Q&A after a screening of “What Happens Later” in New York, Ryan said she became interested in the idea that the characters are “trying to make sense of a life not lived together”, and the unresolved issue of ‘Why didn’t you love me enough?’”, and then 20 years later, they have “this (one) magical night.” She told an interviewer: “That’s a mature issue,” It’s not something I think 20-year-olds think about.” What Happens Later opens today.

★ Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes have gone Instagram-official! In a post that they jointly shared on Wednesday, the two former “GMA3: What You Need to Know” anchors smiled from ear to ear as they held each other close. Holmes’ arm was wrapped tightly around Robach, who placed her hand on his shoulder. The caption: “How’s this for instagram official? #silentnomore. The pair then announced that they are teaming up for an all-new podcast, called: “Amy & T.J.”, set to premiere on Dec.5. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/57bt57wy

★ Most of the “Mean Girls” cast — including Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried — held a super-fetch reunion for a new Walmart commercial that serves as a mini sequel to the 2004 teen-comedy classic. The clip, plugging the upcoming Black Friday extravaganza, stars the trio reprising their Mean Girls characters, but taking on new duties as grown-ups. Lohan leads off, saying: “At North Shore, some things never change. On Wednesdays, we still wear pink.” Next, Chabert appears in a convertible and urges a new group of teens to “get in,” recalling an iconic scene from the flick. Next, Seyfried recreates her character’s legendary newscast, quipping that there’s “a 30 percent chance that it’s already Wednesday.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc5nc8kt

PUMPKINS NICE:
If you still have a lonely-looking, slightly-used jack-o-lantern or pumpkin sitting on your front porch, hold off on throwing it in the trash. They don’t have to end up in the landfill. Here are a few suggestions:
• Consider composting pumpkins in the garden. Slice it up, add materials such as leaves, sawdust, wood chips or cardboard, and occasionally add water to the compost pile. Turning it over with a rake or pitchfork ensures that oxygen is mixed in.
• Donate them to a community garden, farm or even a zoo, or just leave them as a snack for backyard wildlife. Pumpkin is a meal for many farm, zoo and ‘critter’-type animals. And pumpkin seeds are a tasty treat for a wide variety of birds.
(Or you could wear it as a helmet, just like in all those redneck ‘fail’ videos you’ve seen…!)
(Any other uses for pumpkins that you’re aware of? Aside from pie, of course!)

AIRBN THANKSGIVING DINNER:
You’ve probably heard of the viral texting mishap between a grandma and a teenager that has blossomed into a heartwarming Thanksgiving tradition. And now you could be part of the celebration, because Airbnb is offering a chance to join them at the table! Seven years ago, Jamal Hinton’s story became a sensation, when, as a teen, he received a text inviting him to Wanda Dench’s Thanksgiving feast. Here’s the thing: The text was intended for Wanda’s grandson. But after she and Jamal chatted, he ended up getting invited for real. The 2 have reunited every year since for Thanksgiving, and this year, they’re teaming up with Airbnb to give 2 lucky guests the chance to join them, and enjoy a 1-night stay at Wanda’s home in Arizona before US Thanksgiving. They’ll get seats at the annual dinner, and will participate in other traditions of Wanda’s get together, like board games, watching movies, and cozying up by the fire with some cider or hot cocoa. And of course, whoever it is that manages to secure the booking will also be included in Wanda and Jamal’s annual selfie – sure to go viral again this year. The stay will cost only $16 — a nod to the year Wanda and Jamal first spent the holiday together. And Airbnb is making a donation to Feeding America. (That’s ALL they need…me and my wife to come in and wreck their perfectly harmonious Thanksgiving get-together!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Blockbuster is finally being removed from Calgary phonebooks — over a decade after the last store closed in the Alberta city. Each year on social media, locals have been sharing the annual reappearance of the retro video store in their phonebooks every October. When asked for comment, Yellow Pages, which prints the local phone listing, explained: “This team is sent telephone information from…telephone companies…In this specific Calgary phonebook example, our partner is Telus. After reaching out to them, they confirmed that the telephone number listing is still active in their systems and this is why it was included…However, Telus agreed that they can de-activate this number so that it does not continue to print.” The next edition of the Calgary phone book, scheduled for October, 2024, is not expected to include a phone number for Blockbuster Video. (I knew Blockbuster was gone…but who knew they still make phone books?)
➢ We’ve all made embarrassing language flubs while traveling abroad. But a tourist in Portugal took the cake when he accidentally caused a bomb scare by mistranslating the local word for “pomegranate.” The boo-boo occurred when the unnamed Russian speaker from Azerbaijan was trying to order fruit juice at a restaurant in Lisbon. Things backfired after he tried to translate the seed-filled dessert fruit’s name into Portuguese using a language app. He wrote the translation on a napkin and handed it to a waiter. Little did he know, the app had come up with the word for grenade, causing the staffer to interpret the note as a bomb threat — and call police. Local news footage shows 5 officers approaching the traveler with their guns drawn as he lies on the ground. Then they cuff him and take him into custody. He was later released. (Bomb-egranate?)

DID YOU KNOW?

Collins Dictionary has named “AI” as its word of the year, defining it as an “abbreviation for artificial intelligence: the modelling of human mental functions by computer programs.” The UK-based dictionary said in a statement: “Considered to be the next great technological revolution, AI has seen rapid development and has been much talked about in 2023.” Other words considered for the title this year included “de-influencing,” when a social media influencer uses their popularity “to warn followers to avoid certain things, as well as “nepo baby,” and “ultra-processed”. (Gee, do you think they used AI to help pick their word of the year?)

BS CHRONOMETER 11.03.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Cliché Day”. It’s amazing how they infiltrate our daily conversations. (***Try to make it through an entire show without anyone uttering a cliché. Hit the buzzer every time one pops up!***)
MOST ANNOYING BS CLICHÉS:
✗ “To be honest …”
✗ “Threw me under the bus.”
✗ “It is what it is.”
✗ “I’m not joking.”
✗ “With all due respect …”
✗ “Bite the bullet.”
✗ “Par for the course.”
✗ “Run it up the flagpole.”
✗ “You know what I mean?”
✗ “At the end of the day …”
• “Sandwich Day”, celebrating the 1718 birth of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. A compulsive gambler, he wanted something that could be eaten at gaming tables, and earned immortality when he began eating beef between slices of toast in 1792. (Some say he stole the idea from a guest, the Earl of Shrewsbury. So, it should be a peanut butter shrewsbury, a grilled cheese shrewsbury, a knuckle shrewsbury, etc…) [***Here are some truly odd sandwiches …***] LINK: http://bit.ly/sCip1r
• “Housewife Day”, recognizing the importance of stay-at-home wives and moms. Also referred to as “Retro” Housewife Day. These wonderful, caring creatures build and enrich strong family environments and they help to instill family values and good character. (Probably best not to call them ‘housewives’, though…)
• “Jersey Day”, to express your fandom for your favorite pro football team and players. (And to find out who at your workplace judges people according to what team they cheer for!)
• “Love Your Lawyer Day”, a day free of lawyer bashing and lawyer jokes. While lawyers may have a bad reputation, the good they do is often forgotten.
• “Fountain Pen Day’, celebrated by enthusiasts worldwide as a time to embrace, promote, and share the use of fountain pens. FUN FACT: The modern fountain pen was invented in 1884, just 4 years before the ball point pen. (Does this mean that until 1888, the fountain was simply called the ‘pen’?)
• “Give Someone a Dollar Today Day”, nowadays it seems like a dollar is almost worthless, but there still are some things that a dollar can get you. Today, give a dollar to someone you know, or to someone you’ve never met. Perhaps to someone who looks to be in need.

SATURDAY-
• “Candy Day”, for some unknown reason. Maybe a day to try to figure out what to do with all that leftover Halloween candy before your family’s teeth are completely ruined?
• “Use Your Common Sense Day”, promoting the idea of making use of the knowledge and experience which we all allegedly have.
• “Skeptics Day” … or so they claim…
• “King Tut Day”, celebrating the date of the discovery of King Tutankhamen’s Tomb on this date in 1922. King Tut’s rule lasted just 9 years, from 1333 B.C. to 1324 B.C. His cause of death is uncertain. Murder, malaria, and an innocent accident are the main theories.
• “Book Lovers Day”, honoring all the bookworms and book lovers in your life. If you’re a book lover yourself, treat yourself to some quality reading time.
• “Easy-Bake Oven Day”, this pop-culture icon has struck a note with kids and adults. It’s even been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. (We’re in luck! The brownies I started baking in 2006 are just about ready…)

SUNDAY-
• “The End of Daylight Saving Time”, as Standard Time officially returns at 2 am. Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour (remember: ‘Spring forward, Fall back’). Hey, it’s a long weekend! About 70 countries observe DST. Most of North America, Europe and parts of South America and New Zealand adhere to it, while China, Japan, India and most countries do not. (It starts on different dates in some countries. In Australia, DST started Oct. 1. In Europe, it happened last weekend…)
• “Zero Tasking Day”, always the same day that Daylight Saving Time ends, a day to do absolutely squat with the extra 60 minutes you put on the clock because the real gift for this day is not feeling like you have to do something worthwhile with that ‘extra hour’.
• “Guy Fawkes Day” in England, a traditional celebration since 1752 (also celebrated in New Zealand and the Canadian province of Newfoundland & Labrador). It commemorates the 1605 ‘Gunpowder Plot’ when Fawkes-led Catholics attempted to blow up the Parliament Buildings. One of the day’s traditions gives it its nickname … ‘Bonfire Night’.
• “Commercial TV Broadcast Day”, the first commercial was broadcast on television on this date in 1930. (Quick, what is your favorite of all time?)
• “American Football Day”, On this day in 1959, sports fan Lamar Hunt launched a league of his own – the American Football League (AFL). It merged with the NFL in 1966.
• “Love Your Red Hair Day”, a day to celebrate the beauty of those gorgeous red tresses. Today, gingers are encouraged to celebrate their red hair by posting photos on social media using #LoveYourRedHairDay. BS GINGER SNAPS: Famous redheads include: musicians Ed Sheeran, Florence Welch (Florence + the Machine) and birthday-boy Art Garfunkel (when he was younger); actresses Christina Hendricks, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore; actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Damien Lewis and Eddie Redmayne (appropriate name or what?), and, of course, Prince Harry (for a limited time!)
• “Bank Transfer Day”, started in response to plans by big banks to charge fees that many people saw as excessive. The day encourages people to transfer their money from big commercial banks to not-for-profit credit unions.
