BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Hugh Grant and his wife have recovered after battling coronavirus early in the pandemic. During a virtual conversation with Stephen Colbert, Grant revealed that he experienced symptoms in February, calling it “like a poncho of sweat, embarrassing really. Then my eyeballs felt about three sizes too big and …a feeling as though an enormous man was sitting on my chest, Harvey Weinstein or someone.” He said he started to “panic” when he was walking down the street and noticed he couldn’t smell anything.

★ “Hannibal” and “Doctor Strange” actor Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to take on the role of the dark wizard ‘Gellert Grindelwald’ in “Fantastic Beasts 3,” replacing Johnny Depp. After playing Grindelwald in the first two “Fantastic Beasts” movies, Depp announced last week that Warner Bros. had asked him to “resign” from the role after Depp lost his libel trial relating to abuse allegations by ex-wife Amber Heard. “Fantastic Beasts 3” is currently in production in the UK and is scheduled to open in July, 2022.

★ Tori Spelling is a massive fan of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” but has downplayed rumors she’s set to join the cast, insisting she’ll “stick to being a viewer.” Speculation has been rife that she’s set to join the show’s 11th season, alongside her mother, author Candy Spelling. But Tori said to Entertainment Tonight “At the end of the night I’m like, ‘I’m putting on my Housewives’, (but) no clue where (the rumor) came from.”

★ Jason Momoa says he went broke and couldn’t find another acting gig for years after playing ‘Khal Drogo’ on “Game of Thrones.” In an interview with InStyle, he says he was “starving” and “It’s very challenging when you have babies and you’re completely in debt.” Momoa, who shares two children with wife Lisa Bonet, said he struggled to pay the bills until he landed a role on “Justice League” in 2016, which led to his title role in “Aquaman”.

JUST DEW IT:
Mountain Dew is releasing a – cookbook? The soda brand has announced the “Big Bold Book of MTN DEW Recipes,” a collection of about 40 recipes either made by fans, inspired by fans or just enjoyed by fans, to celebrate the drink’s 80th anniversary. Home chefs can look forward to learning how to cook delicious-sounding concoctions such as green pancakes, green eggs and ham, salsas, barbecue sauces, Mountain Dew-infused pickles, jalapeno poppers and Mountain Dew slushies. Some recipes use other sodas from the Mountain Dew family, like Code Red brisket and Livewire-brined turkey. There’s also a mozzarella bites recipe that uses both Mountain Dew and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos crumbs. The cookbook goes on sale at the Mountain Dew website beginning Monday for $30, for a limited time.
(Don’t you mean the cookbook is DEW to go on sale Monday…?)
(Just in case you’re concerned that you’re drinking too much sugar…)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Wildlife officials in California have relocated a black bear that became famous for its repeated snack runs to a gas station convenience store. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the bear, which became a viral celebrity after security cameras recorded it pilfering snacks from inside the Chevron gas station in Kings Beach on multiple occasions, was safely captured and revealed to be a 16-year-old male. (And, like any 16-year-old, he has a thing for gas station nachos and cheese…)
➢ If you’ve ever wanted to hold a girl’s hand and take long romantic walks in the moonlight — but could never actually find a girl, it’s science to the rescue. A research team at Gifu University in Japan has come up with “My Girlfriend in Walk”, a device that aims to recreate the handholding experience. The advanced robotic hand is covered with a gel material designed to feel like touching another person’s skin. A hand’s warmth is reproduced with the help of a film heater, and a damp cloth between the robotic hand and the gel-coating oozes liquid through tiny holes. Fragrances can be added to this artificial sweat to recreate the smell of a certain person. To further emulate the experience of walking hand in hand with a real person, My Girlfriend in Walk’s companion app relies detects the speed at which the wearer is moving, and emits sounds through the phone speakers: footsteps, breathing and even the sound of clothes rubbing against skin. (Hey! Careful there…)

STRANGE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ARE CONSIDERED BAD LUCK:
(Yes, Friday the 13th can be daunting, but in some cultures, so are these…)
⇒ Wishing someone ‘Happy Birthday’ before their birthday: Many Germans believe doing so will cause misfortune to everyone involved. Instead, they sometimes gather the night before a birthday and begin celebrating exactly at midnight. (But I like to celebrate my birthday WEEK!)
⇒ Changing your bed on a Friday: An old wives’ tales says if you turn your mattress that day, you’ll be cursed with bad dreams. Others say the bad-luck day is Sunday. (Let’s just not do that anywhere near the weekend, OK?)
⇒ Carrying bananas on a ship: In the 1700s, many ships that were lost or shipwrecked were carrying bananas, so sailors, who were a superstitious bunch, decided that bananas on a boat meant bad news. (I’d be much more worried about banana PEELS on a boat’s deck, but…)
⇒ Renaming a boat: This goes back to ancient times, when sailors believed that the name of every boat was written in the ledger of Poseidon. If you dared change the name of a boat, you’d incur the sea god’s wrath. (Still, if you happen to buy a boat named “Titanic”, I’d change it…)
⇒ Mixing beers: In the Czech Republic, whose people drink more beer per capita than anywhere else, it’s believed that if you pour one type of beer into a mug containing another type, you’re in for some misfortune. (Especially if the guy whose beer you just stole is bigger than you…!)
⇒ Tuesday the 13th: While many cultures see Friday the 13th as bad news, in Spain, the 13th day of the month is unlucky when it falls on a Tuesday. In Spanish, the word for Tuesday is “Martes,” which comes from “Mars”, the Roman god of war, so Tuesday spells trouble.
(My psychic told me I’d have bad luck until I was 30. And after that I’d get used to it!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Infidelity dating site Ashley Madison has seen a steady uptick in users during the pandemic. The Toronto-based company says its research show the stress of 2020 — plus the experience of being cooped up with partners — has driven more people to seek connections outside their marriages. The service saw a 10% dip in March when lockdowns began, but by late April, numbers had begun to bounce back, and more. Pre-pandemic, Ashley Madison saw around 15,000 new users a day, but over the past two months it’s held steady at more than 20,000 per day.

TODAY’S BS REASON TO PARTY . . .
• “Friday the 13th”, a bad day for those who suffer ‘triskaidekaphobia’ (fear of number 13) or ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ (fear of Friday the 13th). Every year has at least 1, but never more than 3.
• “World Kindness Day”, when we’re encouraged to perform acts of kindness for others. A few suggestions just in case you can’t think of any …
✓ Randomly place boxes of condoms in people’s shopping carts when they aren’t looking.
✓ Walk into a bar and offer to buy a round for everyone. Leave.
✓ Take the parking ticket off some poor driver’s windshield. Put it on someone else’s windshield.
(And whenever you do a good deed, get a receipt, in case heaven is like the tax man.)
• “Actors Day”, dedicated to all the talents who have acted or auditioned for even a small role in any film, TV, or theater project. (My only acting experience is when I’ve said: “No, officer, I DON’T know how fast I was going….)
• “Moms & Dads Day”, because apparently “Mother’s Day” and Father’s Day” celebrations just aren’t enough pressure for kids to deal with … thanks a lot! (Do I have to buy a card for this one too?)
• “Sadie Hawkins Day”, named after the “Li’l Abner” comic strip character ‘Sadie Hawkins, the homeliest gal in the hills’. The tradition that girls can ask boys out on this day was born in the “Li’l Abner” strip published on November 15, 1937.
• “Start a Rumor Day”, there isn’t much information available about this day, so there’s a good chance it got started by a rumor.
SATURDAY-
• “International Girls Day”, instigated by Kappa Delta Sorority to celebrate all kinds of girls with all kinds of interests and abilities. It’s an opportunity to build confidence in girls and help them realize their potential.

• “Spicy Guacamole Day”, a day to show your true green colors by adding some jalapeño to your avocado dip.
• “World Diabetes Day”, recognizing what’s becoming an epidemic. 1 in 2 people currently living with diabetes are undiagnosed. NET: http://www.worlddiabetesday.org/
SUNDAY-
• “Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day”. Just what is that lurking in the back? Don’t open it, the smell might kill you! Hold your breath, scrunch your nose, and get to the task. Who wins the prize for the worst refrigerator surprises? Most often, it’s workplace refrigerators. (“Is this still good?”)
• “Pack Your Mom’s Lunch Day”, when kids with a mother who’s gone back-to-school are encouraged to honor her efforts by making her lunch. (Please don’t use any of that stuff that you just cleaned out of the fridge!)
• “Bundt Day”, celebrating the cake of that name which is baked in a special mold. It was first popularized in the 1950s and ’60s. (Time to get out that ‘Bundt pan’ you never use so you can justify stowing it for another year…)
• “Steve Irwin Day”, honoring the life and legacy of the one and only Crocodile Hunter, and to join together to raise money for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors. From humble beginnings to worldwide fame, Steve Irwin inspired countless individuals.
• “Philanthropy Day”, to recognize the contributions people in the philanthropic community make to our lives, our communities, and our world. Arguably, Bill Gates is at the forefront these days.
• “George Spelvin Day” (female variation ‘Georgette’), commemorating the 1886 invention of the fictitious name used on Broadway for actors who have a second role in a play. The name has appeared in over 10,000 Broadway programs. ‘Walter Plinge’ is similarly used in the UK.
