Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix and Charlize Theron star in the gangster drama “The Yards” . . . The no-name Halloween family fare “The Little Vampire” follows the adventures of a 9-year-old who befriends a young vampire . . . A young girl plucked from small-town obscurity becomes an overnight sensation as a supermodel in Montreal director Denys Arcand’s “Stardom”, starring Jessica Paré and Dan Aykroyd.
WACKY INVENTIONS:
• A new PC peripheral device called ‘iSmell‘ has been developed that recreates scents for Web surfers. Using a mixture of scented oils, it emits aromas based on digital instructions sent over the Internet or embedded in a computer program. The most logical use is to enable perfume sampling by e-shoppers, but it may also find use for sending scented e-mail. (When they develop ‘iFeel’, I’m buyin’.)
• At THIS WEEK’s “Auto Africa Expo 2000″ in Johannesburg, South Africa, a revolutionary prototype car was unveiled – that runs on air! The piston engine is powered by compressed air stored in tanks, similar to scuba diving tanks, and runs for up to 10 hours at an average speed of 50 mph. (Now the big oil companies are trying to figure out how to charge for air!)
TOO STUPID FOR US TO MAKE UP:
• Officials in Genoa, Italy are gleefully publicizing a recent research study which suggests that salami has the same effect as Viagra. (First you have to find some salami,. THEN you can hide it.)
• THIS WEEK French Roman Catholic priests organized a protest against Halloween, saying it’s “devoted to Satan, ugliness and absolute evil.” (Hey, they know all about dressing up funny and giving kids ‘treats’.)
• British bookies are taking bets that the world will end before the year 2001. (OK, so if you win, how do you collect?)
