The new Museum at Bethel Woods in upstate New York, dedicated to the legendary 1969 “Woodstock” rock festival, plans to open as planned despite a withdrawal of $1 million in federal funding previously lined up with the help of Senator Hillary Clinton (what exhibits will be on view – antique bongs?) . . . The attorney for 51-year-old magician David Copperfield is furious police officials have leaked the fact a federal grand jury is investigating allegations his client raped and threatened a 21-year-old woman at his home in the Bahamas (one woman he can’t make disappear) . . . Paris Hilton has narrowly escaped injury when a photographer’s car sideswiped her Cadillac Escalade as she was getting out of the vehicle (dammit – almost!) . . . 27-year-old wannabe star Jessica Simpson has become the latest in a long line of female celebs to launch her own perfume, an as-yet-unnamed line from Parlux fragrances that’s to hit stores NEXT SUMMER . . . BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Beyonce Knowles – She’s pulled out of a concert in Istanbul, Turkey over fears for her safety after 12 soldiers were recently killed in a Kurdish rebel attack.
• Black Crowes – Chris Robinson’s divorce from actress Kate Hudson is final. There’s no word on how they will handle child custody of their 3-year-old son or how they will divvy up their stuff. They were married nearly 6 years.
• NSYNC – In his new book, “Out of Sync”, Lance Bass says he knew he was gay by age 5. He also blames Justin Timberlake for the breakup of the group and says former manager, Lou Pearlman, ripped them off bigtime.
• Spice Girls – Melanie Chisholm has revealed they’ll perform one tune completely in the buff in their upcoming reunion tour … with stage props ‘covering their modesty’. Now that’s spicy!

• Anna Nicole Smith – The official Bahamian inquest into the death of her son Daniel on SEPTEMBER 10, 2006 is scheduled to finally get underway, with at least 35 witnesses expected to give testimony. The long-delayed inquest could last up to 2 months.
• Backstreet Boys – Yep, “Backstreet’s Back” on the “Today Show” (NBC).
• Brad Paisley – He’s on the cover of the DECEMBER issue of “Guitar Player” magazine, which arrives on newsstands TODAY.
• Britney Spears – TODAY’s release of “Blackout” was pushed forward by 2 weeks. It’s her first disc of new material since 2003.
• The Eagles – “Long Road Out of Eden”, their first album of new material in more than 28 years, is being released exclusively in Wal-Mart stores. It includes a double album of 20 songs.

• “Captivity” ( Thriller ): After a serial killer kidnaps a fashion model (Calgary-born, Montréal-raised Elisha Cuthbert) & her chauffeur (Daniel Gillies), the two begin to develop a relationship while they attempt to survive a series of twisted, sadistic games.
• “El Cantante” ( Bio-Drama ): Marc Anthony stars as Hector Lavoe, the real-life Spanish-language singer who achieved major success in the 1960s-70s by bringing salsa music into the mainstream. His terrible addiction to heroin eventually led to his early demise. Anthony’s wife Jennifer Lopez plays his muse and main squeeze.
• “License to Wed” ( Romantic Comedy ): John Krasinski & Mandy Moore star as an engaged couple who are forced into a marriage preparation course run by a sadistic pastor (Robin Williams) who puts them through a series of grueling tests. Krasinski’s “Office” co-stars Angela Kinsey, Mindy Kaling & Brian Baumgartner have secondary roles. Partially shot in Vancouver.
• “Spider-Man 3” ( Action Adventure ): Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst return as ‘Peter Parker‘ & ‘Mary Jane’, now a happy couple, until an old girlfriend shows up (Bryce Dallas Howard) and 2 new baddies: ‘Sandman’ (Thomas Haden Church) & ‘Venom’ (Topher Grace). Also available as “Spider-Man 3 (2-Disc Special Edition)” and “Spider-Man: The Motion Picture Trilogy”.
• “Talk to Me” ( Bio Drama ): Don Cheadle stars in the story of Washington DC radio personality Ralph ‘Petey’ Greene, an ex-con who became a popular talk show host and community activist in the 1960s. Partially shot in Toronto.
• Also released TODAY: “American Gangster: The Complete First Season”; “Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete Series”; “Help! SOCIAL WORK:
A recent study of nearly 1,400 office workers finds that the line between work life and social life is becoming blurred. In fact, the workplace has become the center of many of our social lives. Nearly half say they eat lunch with co-workers at least once a week, and over 70% say they’ve attended a ‘major event’ in a co-worker’s life, such as a wedding or funeral. The study also finds that all this socializing combined with longer work hours is causing some people to spend more time with co-workers than their own spouses. (Better chance of getting lucky?)

A new United Nation’s report entitled “State of the Future” proclaims that people around the world are becoming healthier, wealthier, better educated, more peaceful, more connected, and they’re living longer. Among the feel-good stats in the report are these: world-wide literacy rates are at an all-time high of 82%; more people live in free countries than every before; the average person born in 2025 will live 50% longer than one born in 1955; and world poverty will be cut in half between 2000 and 2015. (On the downside, the Backstreet Boys are threatening to tour again.)

MISTAKEN BELIEFS:
Automotive experts debunk the following urban legends about vehicles and driving …
• When a vehicle has been sitting for awhile, the air in the tires gets stale and needs to be changed. (Try changing the oil once a decade instead.)
• Shiny ornaments, such as CDs hung from the rearview mirror, will confuse radar guns. (Actually, they’re more likely to catch a cop’s eye.)
• Low mileage is important when looking for a used car. (The opposite can be true – engines that are ‘short-tripped’ often exhibit greater wear than those with more highway mileage.)
• If you suck on a penny, you can fool a Breathalyzer test. (Try a hundred-dollar bill. A penny isn’t going to bribe anyone!)
