★ It’s time to take the highway to the danger zone — for real. “Top Gun: The Next Generation”, is a new reality show coming to NatGeo, that will follow a group of Navy students as they train to become fighter pilots. Pilots will bet tasked with performing “some of the most challenging flight tests possible,” according to the network, “including landing on an aircraft carrier at sea” with “the world’s most advanced jet”, as well as following “the prospective naval aviators every step of the way — in the air, in the classroom, off-base and at home — as we discover who’s got what it takes to make it to the F-35C.” No premiere date yet.

★ Will Smith is breaking his silence — sort of. He returned to Instagram on Sunday with his first post since wife Jada Pinkett Smith opened up about their marriage. The video post showed Smith sleeping on a boat at sea, surrounded by a variety of pinging sounds and ringtones. A voiceover said: “Fun fact about me: I can take a nap almost anywhere.” Smith then awakens, sits up straight and shakes his head at the camera. He wrote in the caption: “Notifications off :)” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdcmvnsj

★ Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have reportedly made a $1 million donation to the International Committee to the Red Cross to “help children in Israel and Gaza.” The couple have frequently made a point of donating big sums of money to causes they feel strongly about. They matched up to $1 million in donations to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and $500,000 to the Water First Education & Training Inc. The pair are the first celebrities to make a public donation since the conflict began on Oct. 7.

★ It could be a magical moment. Danny DeVito has confirmed plans to reunite with Mara Wilson, who played his telekinetic daughter in 1996’s “Matilda.” “Matilda in Concert” has DeVito and Wilson narrating the cult classic with composer David Newman playing his score. DeVito revealed that he and Wilson “were planning to perform Matilda live with the New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra just before the strike hit”. But DeVito said they’ll still try to do it “sometime soon, as it seems the strike may be coming to an end — I hope!”

★ “Frasier” is back on TV tonight after 19 years, but Kelsey Grammer’s character doesn’t return to the iconic Cheers bar in the series premiere. Instead, when ‘Frasier Crane’ comes back to Boston, he and his Harvard colleagues head to a bar called Mahoney’s, named after late Frasier star John Mahoney. But there’s still a chance Frasier could return to the bar where he made his debut almost 40 years ago. Executive producer Chris Harris says: “We would absolutely love to explore that. What is the bar now? Are [the Cheers characters] still there? Does everyone know his name still?” But on the other hand, co-executive producer Joe Cristalli joked that “Cheers is a Fuddruckers now.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• David Lee Roth – has dropped the solo song ‘Manda Bala’ via YouTube. It was reportedly recorded in 2007 with guitarist John 5 for an album that was never released. John 5, who has also played with Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, is now guitarist for Mötley Crüe. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrvm6swa
• Scorpions – Frontman Klaus Meine says the band has plans to tour in 2024 and 2025 to celebrate its 60th (!) anniversary. The band is currently on the road, on its “Rock Believer” tour, and according to the singer, they may also “go back to the studio at some point again”.

SHOOTING THE BULL
THE BAREFOOT TRUTH:
If you’re looking to improve your sleep, there are plenty of suggestions out there, including a regular bedtime, using blackout curtains, and avoiding electronics as you wind down. But rarely do people mention this one: Warm up your feet. Some studies have shown that people who wear socks to bed (or warm them up in another way) fall asleep faster and sleep longer. And Dr Biquan Luo, a biomedical scientist in San Francisco, agrees. According to her: “Warming the feet can have a positive impact on sleep for many people, primarily because of its effect in promoting lower core body temperature and relaxation.” It seems that not only can the sensation of warmth on the feet be soothing and relaxing, making it easier to unwind, but it also can dilate the blood vessels in the feet, causing them to expand and hold more blood. This has the effect of decreasing the core body temperature, helping you fall — and stay — asleep, according to Luo.
(Wow — It’s a miracle my wife falls asleep at all!)
(Instead of wearing socks to bed all winter, I’m just going to Bermuda instead!)

EAT, DRINK, AND BE VERY…INFORMED:
❑ Taco Bell has added “premium chicken nuggets” to its menu in Minneapolis. In a direct swipe at competitor McDonald’s, Crispy Chicken Nuggets are now being test-marketed at 83 Taco Bell locations for a limited time. A spokesperson said: “This is like truly a very premium nugget. It’s not a chicken nugget patty you might get at some fast-food restaurants. This is very much more elevated.” (Exactly what we’ve all come to expect from a high-class joint like Taco Bell…)
❑ Alaska Airlines says it has created an in-flight brew that actually tastes good to those in flight. In collaboration with Portland-based roaster Stumptown, the airline has developed a custom blend that it claims stays flavorful at cruising altitudes, where the cabin pressure and air dryness can diminish our ability to taste. (But don’t worry, the new brew will still cause you to make a desperate end run to the occupied washroom 15 minutes later!)

RATE-A-DATE:
Bad news for guys who are looking to “play the field”: You’re going to have to hit the gym first. Why? Women prefer flings with more muscular men, according to a new study. University of Arkansas researchers quizzed 384 females about their thoughts on dating. The women were presented with a photo of a well-chiseled man, then a pic of a scrawnier dude. Most volunteers admitted the muscular male was more attractive to them for a romantic rendezvous. But perhaps surprisingly, the study found that females were less shallow about appearance when it comes to finding a life partner. It concluded that while women associate muscles with being fit and healthy, “in a long-term context, it was important to find a kind person who will support his family [beyond physicality].” And that’s why they found that “Nice guys who make friendly jokes can actually finish first when it comes to attracting a woman looking for a long-term relationship.”
(What about nice guys who make sarcastic jokes? Asking for a…uh…myself…)
(Wow. They should reverse the roles and ask guys the same questions. Mostly because I want to see the pics of the buff babes!)

WHY AREN’T YOU MARRIED?
It’s the question that singles hate to hear. In 1899, a Victorian magazine asked women why they aren’t married. Here are some of their hilarious answers…
⇒ “Because (like a piece of rare china) I am breakable, and mendable, but difficult to match.”
⇒ “Because I have other professions open to me in which the hours are shorter, the work more agreeable, and the pay possibly higher.”
⇒ “Because I am an English lady, and the Americans monopolize the market.”
⇒ “Because I am like the Rifle Volunteers: always ready, but not yet wanted.”
⇒ “For good men are scarce, but fools there are plenty, that’s why I am single at seven-and-twenty.”
⇒ “Like the wild mustang of the prairie that roams unfettered, tossing his head in utter disdain at the approach of the lasso which, if once round his neck, proclaims him captive, so I find it more delightful to tread on the verge of freedom and captivity, than to allow the snarer to cast around me the matrimonial lasso.”
⇒ “…I do not care to enlarge my menagerie of pets, and I find the animal man less docile than a dog, less affectionate than a cat, and less amusing than a monkey.” (Ouch!)

DID YOU KNOW?
The NFL is serious about expanding its influence to the international market. So serious, it’s considering holding a Super Bowl in London. Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke to a fan forum there last week to promote the Baltimore Ravens/Tennessee Titans regular season game in the city. While admitting such a move is not imminent, he said it has been considered. The league has featured regular season games in London, Germany and Mexico — and is said to be considering Spain and Brazil. A league official said it is also considering staging a game in Australia, although time zone constraints are a concern. (First downs down under?)
