BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A crazy jewelry heist scene on “NCIS: New Orleans” got way too real for the actors involved when actual cops showed up and pointed their guns at them — and now they’re suing. The 2 actors, along with the jewelry store owner, have filed a lawsuit in L.A against CBS for allegedly misleading them into shooting a realistic “guerrilla-style” armed robbery in broad daylight without proper permits or notifying local authorities and surrounding businesses about the armed robbery scene. They say that the owner of the store next door understandably called 911 after seeing the actors jump out of a van in ski masks carrying realistic-looking assault rifles while yelling, “This is a robbery!”

★ HBO is developing a limited series about the rise of Elon Musk’s private rocket company SpaceX. Produced by Channing Tatum, the six-episode series will tell the story of Musk as he handpicks a team of engineers to work on a remote Pacific Island where they build and launch the first manned SpaceX rocket into orbit — the Falcon 9 — on May 30, 2020. SpaceX is a big piece of the billionaire entrepreneur’s lifelong dream to make humankind a multi-planetary species.

★ The Kardashian sisters are raising money and awareness for the people of Armenia and Artsakh. They took to Instagram to talk about their partnership with the Armenia Fund, which is raising money for the innocent people caught in the middle of the conflict. Funds will go toward food, shelter, medical attention and other resources. Kim went all out for the announcement, revealing that she is donating $1 million to the organization herself.

LEAF THEM ALONE:
The Nature Conservancy of Canada has some good news for those of us who just can’t seem to get excited about the back-breaking job of raking leaves: Just don’t do it. Why? There are three major benefits to leaving the leaves right where they fall:
• It helps biodiversity: There are many native insects and even some small critters such as frogs and toads that hibernate under the leaves during winter.
• Leaves are a food source for birds: Birds such as robins often flip leaves over to look for insects to eat.
• It’s good for your lawn: Leaves provide a natural mulch when they break down, which fosters soil development. While large piles of leaves can impact the growth of grass and other plants, a thin layer of leaves can help maintain the health gardens and lawns.
(My neighbor will be so happy to hear that he doesn’t have to blow them into my yard this year!)
(Does this apply to the leaves that land in gutters, too? Asking for a friend.)
(Insects provide food for birds? I didn’t even know they could cook!)

PET PEEVES:
➢ If you find your feline friend a little hard to bond with, maybe you’re just not speaking their language. And new research says it’s not so difficult. You just need to smile at them more – with your eyes. By observing cat-human interactions, scientists concluded that narrowing your eyes and blinking slowly (similar to how human eyes narrow when smiling) makes cats – both familiar and strange – approach and be receptive to humans. It’s thought this could be interpreted as a means of signalling benign intentions, since cats are thought to interpret unbroken staring as threatening. (And most other things as well…)
➢ A study has found that dogs aren’t biologically attuned to faces in the same way that humans are — but they work hard to read our expressions anyway. Researchers in Hungary found that dogs simply aren’t wired to respond to faces. When shown pictures or videos of faces, their brains don’t light up the way a human brain does. But lead researcher Attila Andics says this research shows that dogs are “really cool”, because they have to work much harder “to excel at eye contact, to excel at following our gaze, to excel at reading emotions and recognizing the owner.” (And especially the household cook!)

BENCH JOCKEYING:
Some curious plaques mysteriously appeared on benches in Calgary, Alberta’s Bowmont Park recently. After they were removed by the city, Calgarians spoke out in favour of them, and they were reinstalled. The signs appear to be professionally made and feature quirky and fictional prose. They read:
☞ “Humans first invented fire right here, 1903.”
☞ “Benjy, the first hamster to fly solo around the world, took off from this spot in April, 1937.”
☞ This bench marks the site of the first confirmed UFO landing in Calgary, 1963.”
☞ This bench marks the farthest west that Christopher Columbus ever travelled, September, 1494.”
☞ “At this spot in 1806, explorer David Thompson forded the Bow River with his herd of 14 African Elephants.”
☞ “Nothing of note happened here – or at least that is what they want you to believe.”
The six signs have now been placed throughout the park, and the city has challenged Calgarians to try to find all of them on their next nature walk.

DID YOU KNOW?
Mars is making its closest approach to Earth for 15 years, and the next several nights will be prime time for catching a glimpse. Astronomers refer to this moment as “Mars opposition” because the planet is located precisely opposite the sun from Earth’s point of view. That is the point in Mars’ orbit when it comes closest to Earth, this time at about 38.6 million miles (62.1 million kilometers). Mars is visible for much of the night in the southern sky and at its highest point at about midnight. Simply go outside and look up and, depending on your local weather and lighting conditions, you should be able to see Mars.
