Sweet Sheet!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Taylor Swift has reacted to Beyoncé’s surprise appearance at her “Eras Tour” concert film premiere. The Wednesday debut of the movie featured a number of A-listers at The Grove in LA, including Maren Morris, Adam Sandler, Simu Liu and Allison Hsu, Flavor Flav, and Mariska Hargitay. But Swift aside, it was Queen Bey who stole the celeb show, and Swift thanked her after the event, posting on Instagram: “I’m so glad I’ll never know what my life would’ve been like without @beyonce‘s influence. The way she’s taught me and every artist out here to break rules and defy industry norms…She’s been a guiding light throughout my career and the fact that she showed up tonight was like an actual fairytale.”

★ Joel McHale isn’t bothered by Chevy Chase’s recent comments about their comedy “Community.” Chase made headlines last month on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, saying the show “wasn’t funny enough.” Now, McHale has told People that Chase “stopped hurting my feelings in 2009.” McHale, who played ‘Jeff Winger’ on the sitcom, said: “I was like, ‘Hey, no one was keeping you there. I mean, we weren’t sentenced to that show.” McHale also pointed out that Chase “could have left” if he really wanted to, but, as he put it, “That’s Chevy being Chevy.” Chase left the NBC show after Season 4 in 2013 after reportedly using a racist slur toward costar Donald Glover.

★ Jada Pinkett Smith isn’t holding back on the bombshells lately. Another surprising revelation from her upcoming book, “Worthy”, in addition to the fact she says she and Will Smith have been living “separate lives” for 7 years, is that Chris Rock, who was famously slapped by Will on the Oscars stage, once asked Jada out on a date. Pinkett Smith told People: “He called me and basically, he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out. And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that.”

★ It appears Gerry Turner has stolen audiences’ hearts. In its first week, the premiere episode of “The Golden Bachelor” managed to deliver an audience of more than 11M total viewers across linear and streaming platforms. That includes both the debut telecast on September 28, and its rebroadcast on October 3. The Sept. 28 broadcast alone soared to 9M viewers after 7 days of delayed viewing, according to ABC, making it the strongest multiplatform telecast for any series within “The Bachelor” franchise in more than 2 years, when Matt James was the lead.

★ Jeremy Allen White will need to undergo alcohol testing in order to see his children, whom he shares with estranged wife Addison Timlin. “The Bear” and “Shameless” star has reportedly agreed to be tested for alcohol up to 5 times a week when he has custody of his daughters 4year-old Ezer, and Dolores, who is 2, according to court documents. If White does test positive for alcohol, he’ll be retested to ensure it is accurate. If he fails, he loses custody of the girls until next steps are determined.

★ Pete Davidson is perfecting his Kenan Thompson impression, just in time for his “Saturday Night Live” homecoming. After being shut down by the Hollywood writers’ strike in May, the sketch show is returning for season 49, with Davidson hosting tomorrow’s season premiere. Taking his job very seriously in a new promo video, Davidson munches on chips and announces his return to SNL cast members Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman. And most importantly, he tries out his Kenan impression by mimicking one of the comedian’s famously meme-able facial expressions. After striking a pose, he tells Yang and Fineman, “That was my Kenan face.” LINK: https://youtu.be/Ekia3_AOmGY

SHOOTING THE BULL
NEW MOVIE THIS WEEK:

QUICK HIT BITS:
⇒ Apparently, “heads or tails” isn’t quite as fair as we’ve been led to believe. University of Amsterdam researchers discovered that there’s a natural bias that occurs when flipping a coin. In an experiment, coins were flipped 350,757 times – and it was found that the side that was originally facing up came back to the same position 50.8% of the time. While that may not seem like much, the scientists say this is “overwhelming evidence for a same-side bias.” To illustrate this, they pointed out that “If you bet a dollar on the outcome of a coin toss 1000 times, knowing the starting position of the coin toss would earn you $19, on average.” (But knowing the guy who is tossing the coin could earn you waaaay more than that!)
⇒ There’s one bathroom item that’s even dirtier than your toilet – and you’ll never guess what it is. Experts are telling us we should be washing our bathmats every week or two. Rikki Fothergill, a cleaning expert from the e-commerce company Big Bathroom Shop, said: “A survey found a third admitted to washing their mats just two times a year”. And a study found that the bathmat has even more bacteria than a toilet seat. Frequent washing is especially important as we approach winter, in order to maintain a mold-free bathroom environment. (So — bring that bathmat right into the shower with you!)
⇒ A new study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science suggests that giving an anxious dog a chew toy can actually help improve its memory. Auburn University researchers found that “for anxious dogs, chewing on something can help them focus and decrease physiological arousal, while for calmer dogs, chewing could actually be a distraction.” They believe that anxious dogs can gain a “therapeutic effect from the chewing” which may reduce stress levels. (Judging by the condition of my new slippers, my dog has reached Rastafarian-levels of non-stress…mon!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A teed-off tenant refused to be reeled in after her slippery landlord attempted to hook her into a $250 “pet fee” – for owning a goldfish. In North Carolina leaseholder Avianna Brown’s trending TikTok, she says: “Tell me why my apartment complex tried to charge me $250 for a fish as a pet fee?” (We deleted a swear word in there.) In her eye-popping post, the mother of one shared screenshots of messages from her complex’s leasing office, insisting she fill out a “pet application” and submit a $250 money order for her scaley swimmer. At first, she ignored that, but when the landlord issued Brown a “past due” notice for October’s rent, because of her refusal to cough up the extra $250, she posted her conundrum online. One commenter suggested she “Tell them your fish is your emotional support animal”, because then they would have to “allow it with no fee”. (I guess she couldn’t just tell them the fish was food for her cat, huh?) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2s2fykdm
➢ So much for comfortable footwear. A woman claims that wearing Crocs caused her feet to grow. The Irish woman, who goes by “Leahsickofthis” on TikTok, posted a video about her experience with the shoes that has snagged over 300,000 views. In it, she claims that after wearing the shoes all summer in America, she “came home, and none of my shoes fit me, I went from a size 5 to a size 6.” And now? Leah says she doesn’t wear Crocs much anymore, “and I’ve stayed a size 6. So, use that information for whatever purpose you want.” (I don’t know about you, but I count TWO fashion crimes here…!) DID YOU KNOW?
Atari is now taking preorders for a physical cartridge for the company’s classic 2600 console. You heard that right. A gaming console that was hottest in…1982 is releasing a new game. The game-in-question is called “Save Mary”, and it was developed during the console’s golden years, before being shelved when the 2600 went the way of the dodo. Preordering one of these cartridges for $60 gets you a silver collector’s edition box and a full-color manual, in addition to the game itself. There are only 500 available.

BS CHRONOMETER 10.13.23
BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Friday the 13th”, a bad day for those who suffer ‘triskaidekaphobia’ – fear of number 13, or ‘paraskevidekatriaphobia’ — fear of Friday the 13th. Every year has at least 1, but never more than 3.
• “International Day for Failure”, a day to show some stupidity, errors in estimation, awkward moments, and other fails to the world. Why? Without the possibility of failure there is no success, they go hand-in-hand. (So, I’ve got THAT going for me…)
• “International Day for Disaster Reduction”, begun by the UN in 1989 as a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. (How are we doing so far?)
• “International Plain Language Day”, a day to encourage others to cut through jargon and double-speak to state things simply and clearly. (Never use a large word when a diminutive one will suffice) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2s3jd5yu
• “No Bra Day”, a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on the same day as Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, No Bra Day was created in 2011 to raise awareness for breast cancer and to support survivors. The goal is to get more women to be screened for breast cancer.
• “Suit Up Day”. Today, wear a suit in honor of ‘Barney Stinson’, the suit-wearing character played by Neil Patrick Harris on “How I Met Your Mother”. He not only always wore one, but “suit up” was one of his catchphrases.
• “National M&M Day”, 5 facts about the famous “melt in your mouth, not in your hands” candy:
⇒ From 1976 to 1985, there were no red M&M’s
⇒ Blue M&M’s were introduced in 1995
⇒ M&M’s were taken along on the first space shuttle voyage in 1982
⇒ There are 340 million M&M’s produced daily
⇒ The “M&M” was modeled after Forrest Mars, Sr. observed soldiers in Spain in the 1930s eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell of tempered chocolate. This prevented the candies from melting, essential when included in soldiers’ rations.
• “World Egg Day”, observed annually on the 2nd Friday of October to salute the many uses of chicken embryos. Events are held across the world celebrating the egg. (Really?)
• “Silly Sayings Day”, an annual salute to interesting expressions, witty sayings, and odd catchphrases that come and go like fashion. Examples:
➢ Doing nothing is hard, you never know when you’re done.
➢ Always follow your heart, but remember to bring your brain along.
➢ It’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid, then say the opposite.
SATURDAY-
• “Bald & Free Day”, honoring those with a beautiful, shiny top. You don’t have to be bald to celebrate — people who are married to, or related to a bald-headed person are also encouraged to celebrate alongside the honoree. (The people who can’t part their hair because they’ve already parted WITH it!)
• “Dessert Day”, honoring the tasty treat that tops off dinner. The word originates from the French word “desservir”, meaning “to clear the table.” Nowadays, just 12% of families regularly consume dessert, as opposed to 25% in the 1980s. (Sometimes I eat dessert…after dessert!)
• “lowercase day”, a day to write without capital letters. your middle school grammar teacher might be horrified, but the “shift” button on your keyboard will thank you for the day off.
• “World Standards Day”, honoring the experts who develop standards for measurement, electronics, and telecommunications worldwide. (If they can’t even agree on a universal electrical plug, it doesn’t seem to be working…)
• “Chocolate Covered Insects Day”, for this exotic snack, insects are roasted to perfection, then coated in chocolate. Crickets and ants are the most popular variety, and most people think they taste like chocolate-covered popcorn.
• “FRUMP Day”, Probably not what you think it is. FRUMP Day is a day to be a Frugal, Responsible, Unpretentious, and Mature Person. It is also a day to honor those who exemplify these characteristics. (Sounds boring…)
SUNDAY-
• “Global Handwashing Day”, the 16th annual, part of a campaign to motivate people to wash their hands with soap, a key factor in disease prevention. This year’s theme: “Clean Hands are Within Reach”. (Shame that we need a reminder for this…) LINK: https://globalhandwashing.org/global-handwashing-day/
• “Grouch Day”, a day to be grumpy, ungrateful, and cantankerous, and a day to allow grouches everywhere time to spout off. (***Oscar the Grouch sounds here***: https://tinyurl.com/yvy5r7rn )
• “International Day of Rural Women”, a UN observance since 2008. (Celebrate it – even if you can’t SAY it!)
• “Mushroom Day”, saluting the fungus among us. (And you thought you were the only thing kept in the dark and fed crap…)
• “White Cane Safety Day”, set aside since 1964 to celebrate the achievements of the visually impaired and their important tool of independence, the white cane.
• I Love Lucy Day”, celebrating the beloved “I Love Lucy” TV show. Stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz broke new ground with their show, which first aired on this day in 1951.
• “Cheese Curd Day”, the moist pieces of curdled milk either eaten alone as a snack, or used for other things. They are chiefly found in Quebec, Canada, in the dish ‘poutine’ (made of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy), and in the northeastern and midwestern US. Curds are sometimes referred to as “squeaky cheese” (and apparently pair well with ‘whey’…)
• “Pug Day”, Pugs date to 400 BCE or earlier. They became part of royal families when Chinese emperors began keeping them as lap dogs. Pugs were often treated to luxury, and sometimes even given their own palaces and guards.
