★ Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in “Titanic” didn’t have much to his name when he got on the ship, but ‘Jack Dawson’s’ outfit is now expected to sell for way over 6 figures. The costume Leo wore in James Cameron’s classic is going up for auction next month, with the winning bid predicted to fall somewhere between $115,000-$230,000. DiCaprio spent most of the film dressed in the outfit, consisting of corduroy pants, overalls, a button-down long-sleeve shirt and a vest. The garments include custom labels reading “MR: LEONARDO DICAPRIO” and “DATE: AUGUST ’96.” Other items of note at the November auction in London include a light-up ‘C-3PO’ head from “Star Wars: A New Hope”, expected to go for $1.15 million.

SHOOTING THE BULL
PILLOW TALK:
So, the light is out after a long day, and you’re finally ready to drift off. What are you thinking about? It’s important. Scientists say that what goes through your mind before you doze off can impact the quality of your sleep. In studies, those who report good quality sleep experience mostly visual sensory images as they fall to sleep: seeing people and objects, and having dream-like experiences. Those with insomnia or poorer-quality sleep report that their pre-sleep thoughts tend to be less visual and more focused on planning and problem-solving. These people are also more likely to stress about sleep as they’re trying to sleep, leading to a vicious cycle; putting effort into sleep actually wakes you up more. The good news is that you can use certain techniques, called “cognitive refocusing” to change the content of your pre-sleep thoughts. These include deciding before you go to bed what you’ll focus on as you wait for sleep to come.
(Hey! Don’t these people know it’s 2023? EVERYONE thinks about Taylor Swift ALL THE TIME!)
(My main thought as I go to sleep is a visual one. But I don’t think it’s a pleasant one to share. It usually centers around me hoping that I won’t have to get up to pee!)

CHATWWJD:
From the department of “it was going to happen sooner or later”, a church used ChatGPT AI to deliver the Sunday sermon. Pastor Jay Cooper of Violet Crown City Church in North Austin used the language-learning model to do the lord’s work — by having it write not only sermons, but prayers…and a song as well at the Methodist church. He said the reason he used the bot to deliver the Sunday service was to “inform our congregation about AI and to understand its potential and its limitations.” And apparently, the ChatGPT program did reveal some limitations: The sermon was received by many as “shallow and generic” according to the preacher, but it did create “meaningful conversation” among parishioners. However, Cooper calls the AI message a one-time experience, at least for now.
(Sounds like someone forgot to click “save”. How’s THAT for irony?)
(Is this what would be referred to as “unorthodox orthodoxy”?)

SMALL VICTORIES:
You may feel, as a parent, that having kids consists of a never-ending series of losing battles, but according to a new survey, the average parent enjoys a whopping 190 “parenting wins” per year. The top 3 wins reported by Moms and Dads are when their kid takes care of their hygiene (16%), gets dressed in time for school (15%), and eats fruits and vegetables (14%). On the other hand, parents also reported 218 “cave-ins” per year. Those include letting their kid eat the foods and snacks they want (21%), letting them have dessert before dinner (18%) and giving them a device during mealtime (17%). The survey of 2,000 parents with school-age kids also found that in order to get children to eat healthy, parents set up a reward system (17%), add dressing, sauce, dip, whipped cream or ice cream to their kid’s food (14%), and use utensils or dinnerware with characters on them (11%).
(Um…I think I just discovered my wife’s secret tricks to get ME to eat healthy!)
(Adding ICE CREAM to their food?!?!?!? That means even if they’re not eating dessert before dinner, they’re still eating dessert before dinner!)

BEST HALLOWEEN MOVIES, EVER:
Feel-good (or feel-freaked-out) Halloween fare…
1. Halloween (1978): Young Jamie Lee Curtis invented the ‘scream queen’ moniker and Michael Myers still ranks as one of the most iconic villains in horror.
2. Hocus Pocus (1993): It proves that a film doesn’t have to be horrifying in order to capture the spooky aura of the Halloween season.
3. Trick ‘r Treat (2007): It’s the stellar cast – from Oscar-winner Anna Paquin to character greats Brian Cox and Dylan Baker – that elevate the 4 very wicked and genuinely unsettling stories.
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): The stop-motion animated musical is a visual delight that seamlessly combines Halloween and Christmas into one film.
5. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982): An evil company creates masks that kill children wearing them on Halloween night. Oh, and there are a bunch of androids. And Stonehenge is involved. What’s not to love?
6. Pumpkinhead (1988): Nothing says Halloween like a murderous pumpkin beast.
7. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982): It not only featured the spooky holiday as its backdrop, the Spielberg film also inspired the perfect “minimum effort” Halloween costume for generations.
8. Donnie Darko (2001): It’s a time-traveling tale made even spookier by a goth rock soundtrack and Gary Jules’ eerie cover of ‘Mad World.’ Plus, Jake Gyllenhaal’s skeleton get-up has become a cult-fav Halloween costume.
9. House of 1000 Corpses (2003): Rob Zombie’s spin on backwoods horrors like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” is gruesome, dirty and captivating.
10. The Karate Kid (1984): Not a traditional Halloween movie, it still scratches that nostalgic itch to sit on the couch with a bowl of popcorn (or candy) as Daniel LaRusso squares up against Johnny Lawrence. And, hey, a pivotal scene does take place on Halloween!
(What movie [or movies] make the top of YOUR “must-watch-every-year” list?)

DID YOU KNOW?
If you want to keep your pearly whites, cut the calories. British researchers analyzed the results of several studies conducted on both humans and animals to determine the benefits of restricting calories compared to a usual diet. They found that restricting caloric intake “might have the potential to reduce the local and systemic hyper-inflammatory state as well as disease progression” of periodontitis — a serious but fairly common gum disease impacting nearly half of people 30 years and older. (This especially applies to those who insist upon opening their chicken in a can with their teeth!)

BS CHRONOMETER 10.04.23
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Walk to School Day”, held annually on the first Wednesday of October, with students from schools around the globe pledging to walk to school. Kids who do some form of exercise, such as walking to school, arrive refreshed and ready to learn.
• “Cinnamon Roll Day”, or “Kanelbullens Dag” as it’s known in Sweden, the country of the yummy sweet-bun’s presumed origin. A good excuse to scarf one with your coffee this morning. (One another after…)
• “Improve Your Office Day”, a day to focus on ways to make your work experience better. Ideas: Keep it clean; simplify; and bring a piece of outside…inside. (Also: cinnamon rolls.)
• “International Toot Your Flute Day”, to encourage the idea of selling yourself — and telling others how good you are, while rejecting the idea that self-promotion is ‘bragging’. (The problem is that you’ll probably have to listen to others doing the same thing!)
• “Taco Day”, an annual celebration of the great taste of the traditional Mexican dish. Most traditional tacos have corn tortillas with a soft pliable shell, but in the US and Canada, the hard-shelled U-shaped version is the most popular, and was first described in a cookbook in 1949. (You’d almost think they’d have this on a Tuesday, no?)
• “Vodka Day”, celebrating the versatile, virtually tasteless and odorless tipple that accounts for about 25% of spirits sold in North America. There are some wild and wacky added-flavor vodkas available, including maple syrup, root beer float, s’mores, PB & J and – an homage to the breakfast cereal Fruit Loops – ‘Loopy’. More savory options include smoked salmon, chili peppers, bacon, espresso, cucumber, rose and buttered popcorn. (Buttered popcorn flavor? I’m shaken. And stirred.)
• “Golf Lover’s Day”, providing an opportunity for golf enthusiasts to swing down the fairway at least one more time this season. (I’m so bad, last time I golfed, I lost 2 balls in the ball washer!)
• “National Kale Day”, a versatile food, kale can be cooked or eaten raw. It is commonly used in salads or baked into chips. It can be also be used to make many other things, from smoothies to pizza. (I prefer mine with a silent “K”!)
• “Balloons Around the World Day”, the annual event celebrating ‘Balloon Sculpture’. Balloon artists worldwide showcase the art of balloon twisting and decorating and, in the process, deliver thousands of smiles through the act of giving.

➠ Men who smoke weed have lower sperm counts, says a report. (If that’s true, could someone please explain the population of Jamaica?)
