BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
[***UPDATE***] ★ Liam Payne, a former member of boyband One Direction, has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to police there. He was 31. One Direction, which also included Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan, formed in 2010 after each member appeared on the UK reality competition show “The X Factor.” They split in 2015. Payne had a son, born in 2017, who he shared with former Girls Aloud singing group member Cheryl Cole.

★ Sacha Baron Cohen says his ‘Borat’ character may never return. The 53-year-old starred as the Kazakhstani journalist in the 2006 satirical comedy and its sequel “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”, but was forced to flee an enraged pro-gun “militia” in Washington State during filming for the 2020 follow-up. Appearing on the ‘SmartLess’ podcast, he explained: “After that gun rally, I was essentially on the run.” He said he “was going from safe house to safe house for about 4 days”, and “at some point, your luck runs out.” Baron Cohen said the experience had left him so shaken that he doesn’t want to reprise the role out of concerns for his wellbeing.

★ “The View” has canceled its annual fan-fave Halloween episode. Producer Brian Teta revealed on the “Behind the Table” podcast that the show will not roll out a 2024 Spooky Season installment. He said to Joy Behar: “This year, because it’s only a few days before the election and we need to be live, the hosts are not going to dress up for Halloween.” Behar pointed out that the show has presented a Halloween episode for 28 years, and said “it’s always annoying for us” as cohosts, but she savors the classic moments that have come from the episodes in the past, including when Barbara Walters dressed up as an alien. Teta promised that he will “try to bring it back next year,” but said that the Halloween episodes are a “huge undertaking”, and the show “can’t be on tape 3 days before the election.”

★ “Drake and Josh” star Yvette Nicole Brown said she couldn’t look the late Matthew Perry in the eye when they worked together because she was such a fan of “Friends”. In a podcast appearance, Brown said that when they starred together on the 2015 sitcom “The Odd Couple”, she could hardly concentrate on the show or look directly at Perry for fear that she’d “cry or fangirl a little bit too much”. After shooting 2 episodes, she finally said to him: “I’m sorry, I’m a weirdo, but I just really love you. And I think Chandler was really great.” Perry’s response: “Yvette, like, what are you doing? Like, this is me, it’s fine”. Brown says that helped her get over her “weird fangirl thing”.

★ A 6th ‘Jason Bourne’ movie is reportedly in development. The Matt Damon spy franchise has been quiet since the 2016 movie “Jason Bourne”, but a new listing from ProductionWeekly indicates that Universal Pictures is actively working on its next instalment, which is thought to be titled “The Bourne Dilemma”. The listing claims “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger has signed on to make the film, taking over from Paul Greengrass. The Times recently reported that Greengrass, who has helmed the series since “The Bourne Supremacy” in 2005, was asked by Prince William if he would consider making another Bourne movie, but the 69-year-old filmmaker insisted the studio needs “somebody younger”.

★ Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson will star in the upcoming movie “Song Sung Blue” — about a Neil Diamond tribute band. The film is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name by director Greg Kohs, about 2 down-on-their-luck musicians who form a tribute band to the ‘Sweet Caroline’ singer. Michael Imperioli, Fisher Stevens and Jim Belushi will also star, along with Ella Anderson, King Princess, Mustafa Shakir and Hudson Hilbert Hensley. No release date yet.

• Queen – are discussing new music. The group hasn’t put out an album since 1995’s “Made In Heaven”, 4 years after the death of frontman Freddie Mercury. Roger Taylor quote: “Brian (May) and myself were talking the other day, and we both said that if we feel we have some good material, why not?”
• Shaboozey – ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ is now in the midst of an amazing 18th week at the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, tying Florida Georgia Line’s ‘H.O.L.Y.’ for the 12th-longest run at #1 since the chart began in 1958.

SHOOTING THE BULL
TEENAGE FRIENDCLUB:
Today, as online friendships sometimes seem more common than those in-person, new research is showing a surprising key to happiness for young adults: friendship satisfaction. A University of Arkansas study found that teenage friendships lay “essential” foundations for well-being in later life. It was determined that being accepted by one’s peers as a young teen, and close friendships in older teens, generally lead to low levels of social anxiety, and high life satisfaction in later life. The researchers explained that our relationships with others affect how we feel about ourselves, as well as our psychological well-being, and this is especially true in our teenage years.
(…and then you hit my age, when all of a sudden, you just don’t freaking care – and it’s wonderful!)
(Wow! It looks like my kids’ friends might be good for something after all!)

DORITOS – IT’S WHAT’S FOR DINNER:
Popular tortilla chip brand Doritos has opened a restaurant – with a twist. “Doritos After Dark”, is said to be a “new, bold,” culinary experience for those who “seek the unexpected”. The food outpost is located inside LA’s Crypto.com arena, and available to event ticket-holders only. The company says customers are able to “experience their favorite brands from Frito-Lay in delicious new ways.” And what are some of those delicious new ways? For starters (literally…) the restaurant offers spicy appetizers created to show surprising ways that Doritos can enhance people’s favorite food items. Also available will be entrees, desserts, and even drinks, all created with recipes featuring Doritos and other Frito-Lay products. The brand first introduced Doritos After Dark in 2022 with pop-up kitchens in New York and LA.
(Not to be outdone, Pringle’s is planning its own eatery, offering “all the maltodextrin and dextrose, MSG, modified food starch, and yeast extract you can eat!”)
(A dessert that includes Doritos? Is that their way of trying to reach a ‘wider’ audience?)

MONEY MATTERS:
What financial tips did you receive from your parents? And did you follow them? The average parent gives their child 114 pieces of unique financial advice per year, according to new research. But, as you know, parents aren’t perfect. The survey of 5,000 American parents, all age 30-plus, found that their kids listen to that advice only about half the time (54%). And kids actually ask for help in money matters about 4 times a month. Of those who are asked for financial advice, 36% said they’re “very” confident in their answers, while 34% said they are “somewhat” confident. The areas that parents said they are most confident in helping their children with included budgeting, managing savings options, and credit cards. And things that your parents may be as “in the dark” about as you are include moving money internationally and currency conversion.
(…and of course, if your parents are REALLY good at moving money internationally, you’ve got to wonder what exactly they did for a living before you were born!)
(My dad’s idea of good financial advice is to drive 2 towns over to save a nickel on gas!)
(Should I take it as some kind of statement that neither of my kids has ever, EVER asked me for money advice?)

TV SPINOFFS THAT BECAME BIGGER THAN THE ORIGINAL SHOWS:
☆ The Simpsons (since 1989): As any hardcore fan knows, Homer and his dysfunctional family made their debut in 1987 in a short animated segment produced by creator Matt Groening for “The Tracey Ullman Show”, a sketch comedy series.
☆ Happy Days (1974-84): This mega-hit originated as part of the anthology comedy series “Love, American Style”. Once Ron Howard was cast in “American Graffiti”, ABC picked up the show and turned it into “Happy Days”. Add one ‘Fonzie’, and the rest is history!
☆ Frasier (1993-2004): It’s not necessarily more beloved than “Cheers”, but it certainly lasted longer. After debuting in Cheers Season 3, Dr. Frasier Crane, who was only intended to appear for a few episodes, he got his own show in 1993, and was picked up again for an ongoing revival in 2023.
☆ Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (since 1999): The “Law & Order” spinoff is the only live-action primetime series from the 1990s that is still in production today — in season 26, with more than 550 episodes so far. (DUN-DUN!)
☆ NCIS (since 2003): It came from a double-episode arc in “Jag” season 8. To date, in its 21st season, it’s the third-longest running primetime drama, surpassed only by “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: SVU”.
☆ The Hills (2006-10): Before the housewives took over Orange County, “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” was there. It only lasted 3 seasons, but star Lauren Conrad moved to LA to pursue a fashion career, and “The Hills” was born.
☆ The Flash (2014-23): The CW’s multiverse of shows adapted from DC Comics began with “Arrow” in 2012, but it didn’t really ‘take off’, so to speak, until “The Flash” ‘hit the ground running’ in 2014. The Flash even spun off another series, “Legends of Tomorrow”.

DID YOU KNOW?
A report in USA Today says that if you’re looking to hand out healthier treats this Halloween – ones the kids will still enjoy – your best bet is to go with peanut M&Ms. According to a registered dietitian, Peanut M&Ms, thanks to the “peanut” part, at least provide some substance. A serving of Peanut M&Ms contains a little less than 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of protein and 9 grams of sugar. A similar-sized serving of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups is a close second, with around the same nutritional value, but a bit more added sugar. Peanut M&Ms are made with mostly milk chocolate, unlike many other treats, which are made mostly from corn syrup. (So…handing out corn syrup is probably a bad idea, right?)
