BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Dwayne Johnson is responding to backlash he received after asking his social media followers to donate to his Maui wildfire. The Rock, along with Oprah Winfrey, started the People’s Fund of Maui, pledging a combined $10 million to help with the devastation from the fires. Both implored people to contribute, prompting immediate criticism. In an Instagram video, Johnson said: “I get it and I completely understand. And I could have been better. And next time I will be better. I understand, you know, money ain’t fallin’ out of the sky…And there’s a lot of people out there living paycheck to paycheck, and I get it, and I know what that’s like.” He explained that he’d “never launched a fund before, but I’m a quick study and lesson learned”. He also encouraged fans: “If I do something and you guys love it, you let me know… If I do something and you hate it, you let me know.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/445w38tw

★ Sophie Turner is feeling “Fearless.” She returned to Instagram for the first time since she and Joe Jonas revealed their divorce in a joint statement last month. In a since-deleted Story upload, the “Game of Thrones” alum appeared to send her estranged husband a Taylor Swift-inspired message with a bold accessory. Turner, who has been living at the singer’s apartment amid her and Jonas’ custody battle over their 2 daughters, snapped a photo of the beaded “Fearless” bracelet around her wrist. Swifties will note that friendship bracelets have become a staple at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, thanks to the lyric in ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid’, which says to “make the friendship bracelet, take the moment and taste it.”

★ Greta Gerwig says she hid in the back of “Barbie” screenings during its opening weekend, in order to judge people’s reactions first-hand. Speaking at a special screen talk on Sunday at the BFI London Film Festival, the director said, quote: “I went around to different theatres and sort of stood in the back, and would then also turn up the volume up if I felt it wasn’t playing at the perfect level.” Gerwig also teased that she is currently working on her next project, but wouldn’t reveal what it is, as it is currently “in the writing process”.

★ Another ‘Wonder Woman’ movie starring Gal Gadot is not likely, according to a new report. Gadot gave fans a glimpse of hope in the summer when she told ComicBook.com that she was developing “Wonder Woman 3” with new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. But now sources close to the studio say that the project is not moving forward. Variety says there are no plans for Wonder Woman 3 right now, but the prequel spinoff series “Paradise Lost” is still moving forward. That’ll be a series about the mystical island that Wonder Woman comes from, but will not star Gadot.
★ “The Exorcist: Believer, summoned the #1 spot at the domestic box office, despite falling short of expectations. The reboot in the horror movie franchise collected $27.2 million over the weekend, below estimates that suggested a debut of near $35 million. These ticket sales fall somewhere in between recent horror releases “Saw X” ($18.3 million) and “The Nun 2” ($32.6 million). The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hit theaters exactly 50 years after the first “Exorcist” opened.

★ Michael Chiarello, a celebrity chef and former Food Network star, has died at 61. Chiarello passed Saturday in hospital in Napa CA, where he was being treated for an acute allergic reaction that led to anaphylactic shock, his company Gruppo Chiarello announced in a statement. His Emmy-winning cooking show “Easy Entertaining With Michael Chiarello” ran for 10 seasons on Food Network. Chiarello also served as a judge on “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters.” In 2011, he participated in Food Network’s “Next Iron Chef” competition.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SCIENTISTS SAY:
❑ So, those people who get up at 5am in the middle of winter to go for a jog might not be as crazy as you thought. Running is just as effective as taking medication to beat depression, according to a new study. Researchers from Vrije University, Amsterdam had 141 patients suffering from depression and anxiety choose between a group run, 2 to 3 times a week, or taking anti-depressant medication. It was found that “both interventions helped with the depression to around the same extent”, but the running group experienced improvements in weight, waist circumference, blood pressure and heart function. Those who took antidepressants tended to become less fit. (So, it’s OK to “run away” from your problems?)
❑ The more time you spend engaging in a structured exercise routine, such as going to the gym or running, the lazier you are the rest of the time, says a recent study. University of Copenhagen researchers conducted a review of 24 studies that looked at people’s levels of daily physical activity before and while participating in different types of structured exercise regimens. It was found that a person who is more engaged in a routine exercise program is more prone to “lounge around” and avoid other, non-structured physical daily activities, like taking the stairs. This decline in physical activities (which might also include avoiding things like walking the dog, riding a bike to work or standing at the desk at work) could affect people’s ability to lose weight successfully — even if they participate in a routine structured exercise program. (Gotta admit it – I’d be avoiding those things either way!)

HOME WORK:
No one wants to do household chores, but there may be a bright side to it – aside from having a clean and tidy home. One in 4 people say it helped them bond with their parents. In a survey, 7 in 10 people said they have a strong relationship with their parents and spending quality time together (61%) was the main reason for it. And yes, that quality time includes doing household chores. The survey of 2,000 people in the US by OnePoll also found that 64% found comfort in doing tasks the way they learned from their parents. The top tip that people learned from their parents? That would be not to dust around items, but to pick them up and dust all around. And 70% said they learned to wash dishes in a specific order: silverware, glasses, plates, and then pots and pans. Six in 10 still follow the habit of “putting the kitchen to bed,” meaning they clean the kitchen before leaving it. And among the survey respondents, 56% said they would choose to do chores as a way to spend time with their families.
(Hey – Whatever it takes to get some help in here!)

SUSPENDERED:
Well, THAT was awkward. Last week’s national phone emergency alert in the US seems to have outed a few Amish cell-phone owners. A former member of the plain-living Amish community has uploaded a hilarious story to TikTok about how the emergency alert test affected some of his friends back home. The Amish are forbidden from using most modern technology. Eli Yoder explained in his now viral video how over the years, quite a few Amish men had reached out to him asking for phones, so he did what he could to get them one. But it seems after the big event of Oct. 4, when cell phones were buzzing across the country, a number of his friends were in the presence of other member of the Amish community, and had a hard time explaining the sounds emanating from their hand-sewn pockets. One friend even had some Amish elders come to the house to talk to him “about something that they heard about him.” In his video, Yoder said the man “might have to get shunned.” That’s the Amish church term for exclusion, or isolation from community life and activities. DID YOU KNOW?
US food companies are having a hard time convincing enthusiastic baseball fans in Japan to eat peanuts at games. Why? It’s not the taste. While baseball is just as popular in Japan as it is in the US, the cultural attitudes towards littering are vastly different. In Japan, public cleanliness is highly valued, and casually discarding waste on the ground in public spaces, such as peanut shells, is seen as inappropriate. Peter Vlazakis, senior director of international programs for the American Peanut Council, said: “They’re just not comfortable with littering.”

BS CHRONOMETER 10.10.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Face Your Fears Day”, to give people the permission, the encouragement and the little nudge they need to step up to their fears and say ‘no more.’ Whether your deepest fear is to fly, to encounter snakes or spiders, or to seek a better job, or a new romantic relationship, today is the day to overcome your trepidations. (Fine. Just don’t make me speak in public!)
• “Metric Day”, celebrating the system of measurement based on a reliance on multiples of 10. For that reason, Metric Day is celebrated on 10/10. Flemish mathematician Simon Stevin first suggested such a system in 1586, centuries before the metric system became an accepted form of measurement.
• “Angel Food Cake Day”, honoring the dessert every starving dieter touts as being ‘fat-free’ … just before inhaling it in its entirety. (With a ton of high-fat whip cream!)
• “International Stage Management Day”, celebrating all the work that stage managers do in theaters and on film sets. (Like referees, if you don’t notice them, they’re doing a great job!)
• “World Homeless Day”, to draw attention to the needs of the homeless and provide opportunities for communities to get involved in responding.
• “World Mental Health Day”, a day for mental health education and awareness. It was first celebrated in 1992 as an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, which operates in more than 150 countries.
• “World Porridge Day”, a celebration of Scotland’s traditional national dish. It began in the wee Scottish Highlands village of Carrbridge (home of the annual “World Porridge Making Championship”) as a fundraiser to help feed needy children. So how do you like your gruel? (I like mine not too hot, not too cold…but JUST RIGHT!)
• “Hug a Drummer Day”, a day to celebrate drummers, the percussionists who keep the rhythm and beat of music, but are usually the least-celebrated bandmembers. Today, we bring a little appreciation and exposure to drummers. And because we never miss a chance to tell them, here are our favorite drummer jokes:
➢ How can you tell when a drummer’s at the door? [The knocking speeds up. Then he doesn’t know when to come in.]
➢ How can you tell when the stage riser is level? [The drool comes out of both sides of the drummer’s mouth.]
➢ What do you call a drummer who breaks up with his girlfriend? [Homeless.]
➢ What’s the last thing a drummer says in a band? [“Hey guys, why don’t we try one of my songs?”]
➢ [***CAUTION***] What’s the difference between a podiatrist and a drummer? [A podiatrist bucks up your feet…]
➢ And the all-time classic: What do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? [A drummer.]
