Thanks For Being a Bull Market!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Bad Bunny’s guest list was one for the “Saturday Night Live” books. The Puerto Rican rapper pulled double duty as host and musical performer for the show, which included surprise appearances by Pedro Pascal, Mick Jagger and Lady Gaga. Bunny opened the show by addressing concerns that he couldn’t host, given that English “is not my first language.” To help, he brought out Pascal to translate the Spanish portion of his monologue. After firing off a few sentences in Spanish about his morning in New York, the actor jokingly translated: “He says, I’m blessed to be here with my favorite actor Pedro Pascal.’ Jagger, in his first SNL appearance since 1986, joined the reggaeton artist for a sketch parody of “Sister Act 3.” Gaga introduced Bad Bunny’s performance of ‘Un Preview’.

★ A big-name actress and her say they’ve been separated for more than 6 years. And we’re not talking about Jada Pinkett and Will Smith. Meryl Streep and Don Gummer, who have been married for 45 years and share 4 kids, have just come clean on their relationship. A statement from the couple says: “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” Although the pair has not been seen publicly together since the 2018 Oscars, Streep was seen wearing her wedding band as recently as Friday at the 2023 Princesa de Asturias Awards in Spain.

★ It would seem the flower moon has been eclipsed by Taylor Swift. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” earned $9.4 million domestically on its opening day, including $2.6 million in Thursday previews. The epic-length historical drama is projected for a $23.5 million weekend, finishing behind the second weekend of Swift’s “Eras Tour”, which made an estimated $34 million. The concert documentary has now exceeded a $100 million domestic gross — a benchmark that only 18 other wide releases have achieved this year.

★ Tom Brady and Irina Shayk have called it quits on their brief, but super attractive romance. TMZ quotes a source as saying that the 2 eventually “fizzled out” after some time together – with no drama or scandal. The signs may have been on the wall recently that things were likely over, as both have spent a lot of time in separate cities. Some have wondered recently if Shayk had gotten back together with her ex, Bradley Cooper, after she posted a pic of him on social media.
-TMZ
★ Emily Blunt is apologizing for a resurfaced 2012 talk show appearance showing her using insensitive language. Fans recently discovered a YouTube clip from the “Oppenheimer” star’s appearance on the UK’s “Jonathan Ross Show in which she referred to a restaurant server as “enormous” while recalling her time making the film “Looper”. In a statement, she said: “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell”. The statement concludes: “And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”

★ Every Halloween, celebs love to show off their elaborate costumes, often based on TV shows and films. But this year, things will be different, because actors have been warned that dressing as characters from major shows and movies would break the rules of the strike. That means outfits based on ‘Barbie’, ‘Wednesday Addams’ and superheroes – as well as many others — are banned, and wearing one would promote content made by the studios the actors are in dispute with, their union said. SAG-ACTRA advised its members to “Choose costumes inspired by generalized characters and figures”, such as ghost, zombie, or spider outfits, or characters from content that does not fall under the strike rules, such as animated TV shows.

FRIGHT LIST:
Google has released its list 2023 list of the “Frightgeist” Halloween costume searches. The search engine says that this year’s top Halloween costume is – of course – ‘Barbie’. It’s the first time in 3 years that ‘witch’ isn’t in the top spot. The Frightgeist index, which analyses search data throughout the US and locally, shows that following Barbie, the most-searched Halloween costume searches are ‘princess’, ‘Spider-Man’, ‘witch’, ‘fairy’, ‘Wednesday Addams’, ‘dinosaur’, ‘cowboy’, ‘ninja’ and ‘bunny’. Top couple’s costumes? ‘Barbie and Ken’ (of course), followed by ‘Mario and Luigi’, ‘Bonnie and Clyde’, ‘Cosmo and Wanda’, and ‘Lilo and Stitch’. For family costumes, the top picks are, in order, ‘Addams Family’, ‘Toy Story’, ‘Mario’, ‘Flintstones’ and ‘Monsters Inc’. And for babies, you can’t go wrong with a ‘Slinky dog’ costume. That one is followed by ‘Pebbles’ and ‘Bam Bam’, ‘Chucky’, ‘Barbie’ and ‘Theodore Chipmunk’. LINK: https://frightgeist.withgoogle.com/costumes
(The only problem? It seems like everyone’s been dressing up as Barbie for 6 months!)
(We understand that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s people are demanding a recount in the ‘favorite couples’ costume’ category!)

SNOOZE NEWS:
You may have caught this info late last week – but to me, it’s news best suited to a Monday. It turns out that if you hit snooze, you don’t lose. A new study by scientists in Sweden suggests that snoozing your alarm has no impact on sleep quality. What’s more, for some, hitting the button multiple times over 30 minutes may spark alertness more quickly than sleeping through without a break. The study found “that snoozing for 30 minutes in the morning does not make you more tired or more likely to wake up from deep sleep,” said the study’s lead author, Tina Sundelin, an associate professor at Stockholm University. According to her, “For those who usually snooze, it might even be helpful with waking.” Among those participating in a study group, 69% said they hit the snooze button at least sometimes, and 60%, said they generally fall asleep between alarms, the result being that snoozers tend to get a little less sleep than non-snoozers.
(Well, isn’t falling back asleep the whole POINT of hitting the snooze button?)
(I go back to sleep after hitting snooze, too. Well, after having a heart attack AND hitting snooze, actually!)

NEW GOOD NEWS
➢ Scientists say they have made a “tremendously exciting” breakthrough in treating prostate cancer. One in 8 men will be diagnosed with the disease, which can resist existing treatment. But in a clinical trial, researchers showed that blocking the signals that prostate cancer use to hijack white blood cells can make advanced tumours respond to treatment – shrinking them or halting their growth. The research was led by the Institute of Cancer Research, London, which described it as a “major scientific advance”, and suggests that “we have an entirely new way to treat prostate cancer on the horizon.”
➢ Sarah Bohan was on mile 21 of the Chicago Marathon this month when she happened to spot an abandoned kitten under a pile of leaves. Bohan was on pace for a personal record, but she was also running on “Team PAWS Chicago” to benefit the animal welfare organization, and knew she couldn’t leave the cat behind. Sprinting into action, she asked several people along the route if they’d take him, and after a mile, she met the kitten’s match, Andrea Maldonado. Her family has 2 cats and a dog already, but she welcomed the new addition because “the more the merrier.” The kitten, now named Casper, received a clean bill of health and has settled right in with the Maldonados. (It turns out she set a ‘personal best’ anyway!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5n8s84x

DID YOU KNOW?
A pair of hot-rod honeys created some noise online recently, when they added the cost of hubby-to-be James’ $231 speeding ticket to their wedding gift registry. Regarding the ticket, Oklahoma bride-to-be Annabelle wrote sarcastically on her trending TikTok: “Wedding in 26 days, timing couldn’t be better.” The clip offers online audiences a glimpse at the request in the “cash fund” section of their digital gift wish list. And despite the bold ask, social media supporters showered the lovebirds with praise for their slick trick to avoid paying out of pocket — and some even offered to donate. BS CHRONOMETER 10.23.23
TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Canning Day”, honoring the birth of French chef/chemist Nicolas Appert, who came up with the concept of sealing perishable food in jars. For this, he is known as “the father of canning”, but he also came up with many other inventions … including the bouillon cube.
• “TV Talk Show Host Day”, to celebrate those ‘gifted with the personality and intellect to bring out the best in their guests’. It’s an annual observance on the birth anniversary of iconic talk show host Johnny Carson in 1925. Who’s today’s best?
• “Boston Cream Pie Day”, although it is called a pie, Boston cream pie is actually a cake. It consists of two round layers of sponge cake with a thick vanilla custard filling. It is usually frosted with a chocolate glaze but it can also be topped with confectionary sugar. The dessert is served in wedges just like a pie.
• “Croc Day”, crocs are everywhere, from college campuses to fashion runways, on celebrity feet and in the garden. And why not? They’re versatile, vibrant, and most of all, comfortable. (And NEVER the butt of any jokes…)
• “Slap Your Irritating Co-Worker Day”, we’re kidding! (Honest! The HR department told us we are!) But just for fun, here are the rules you must follow…
* You can only slap one person per hour – no more.
* You can slap the same person again if they irritate you again later in the same day.
* You are allowed to hold someone down as other co-workers take their turns slapping the irritant.
* No weapons are allowed…other than going upside somebody’s head with a stapler or a hole-puncher.
* If questioned by a supervisor [or police, if the supervisor is the irritant], you are allowed to LIE, LIE, LIE!
(We don’t recommend that you actually slap anyone, but sometimes it sure is nice to think about it…)
