SHOOTING THE BULL
WHO’S ZOOMIN’ WHO?
The background you choose for your Zoom call can significantly impact first impressions. That’s probably not news to you. But here’s the surprising thing: It turns out that the busier your background is, the better! Researchers from Durham University found that those involved in a video conference show a preference for settings featuring bookcases and houseplants. Those items were determined to convey an aura of trustworthiness and competence. The team said that we should not only consider displaying books or plants in the background of our video calls – we should also remember to smile.
(So there you have it – you’ve need to do one of 2 things: Either take your books to work – or work from home!)
(Well, I have to admit it – I definitely feel more trust toward a guy who has an impressive collection of literature, over some dude wearing a safari hat with a fake rainforest behind him!)

TECH TALK:
➢ Makers of the world’s first “AI-powered grill” say it can cook the ‘perfect’ steak in 3 minutes. British company Seergrills’ cool new culinary toy — called “Perfecta” – is powered by proprietary NeuralFire technology, which uses dual infrared burners — and machine-learned knowhow — to determine how to cook the food to “perfection” at a blistering 1652°F, according to the company. Would-be chefs insert the steak into the machine vertically, then tap the touch screen to select the cut of steak they are using, as well as the desired wellness level. Propane burners emit infrared rays, cooking steak evenly…and it doesn’t even need to be flipped. How much for the AI-powered grill? $3,500. (Pretty sure I could still screw it up!)
➢ While there’s no denying that many have found love online, a new study has found that married couples who met using dating apps, like Tinder, Bumble, Grindr and Hinge, are less satisfied with their marriages than wedded partners who met in-person. Researchers at Arizona State University surveyed 923 married adults in the US, and found participants who met in online were not only less satisfied in their relationships, they also reported less stability. Possible reasons surmised by researchers included the fact that digital daters tend have their unions marginalized by some friends and family, and they tend to be younger, which can have a negative affect on relationships. (So – NOT living ‘app-ily’ ever after?)

HAIRY GIRL WINTER:
“Hot Girl Summer” must be officially over. A big-name TikTok creator has come out to defend her body hair in an empowering post, and encourage anyone who wants to put down the tweezers and razor — and have a “hairy girl winter”. 20-year-old Spencer Barbosa has over 9 million followers. She dedicates most of her content to talking about body image, body acceptance and self-love, and now, she has opened up about her body hair, saying in a TikTok vid that “Body hair is natural, real and more than acceptable.” And while this shouldn’t be news to anyone, Barbosa is reminding people that you should never feel like you have to shave for someone else, because it “your body, your choice”. The influencer explained that she grew up feeling like she needed to eliminate all her body hair to feel attractive. But as she puts it, “If you want to have hairy legs…have hairy legs…If you despise hair and you don’t want hair on your body, remove the hair on your body.” She also took time to remind followers that having body hair isn’t “unhygienic” or “masculine” – it’s just something that everyone grows.
(And hey – it’s warmer!)
(She’s right. You should never have to shave for someone else. And that’s exactly what I’m gonna say next time my Mom gives me crap about my beard!)

WACKY WEATHER WORDS:
Tired of your typical weather terms, like “scattered showers” or “hot and humid”? Try working one of these into your next weather conversation (or forecast!)…
☞ Frog strangler: This goes back to the 1870s, and refers to a heavy downpour…apparently capable of drowning frogs. Also acceptable: ‘frog choker’, ‘frog drowner’, or substitute the word ‘toad’ for extra oomph.
☞ Gorilla hail: Coined by Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer during a Texas storm in 2020. It means just what you think it means – huge hail.
☞ Monkey’s wedding: Also known as a sunshower. Legends vary, but rats, bears, jackals and tigers have also been accused of arranging nuptials in this type of conditions.
☞ Turkey Towers: Storm chaser slang for clouds that rapidly build upwards, exhibiting a turkey-like “neck.”
☞ Microburst: When a surge of rain falls out of a thunderstorm and hits the ground, and pushes outward into a foot shape.
☞ Sting jet: A small area of intense winds that can cause extensive damage. The formation looks like a bee’s stinger or scorpion’s tail on weather maps. (What? No bees? No airplanes?)
☞ Bear’s cage: The area of a tornado where the view is literally blocked by rotating walls of rain or hail.
☞ Suck zone: The point basically when a twister literally sucks you up. (That’s not the technical term for it, obviously…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Would you pay nearly US$14 a month to use Instagram on your phone without ads? How about nearly $17 a month for ad-free Instagram plus Facebook — but on desktop? That’s what Meta wants to charge Europeans for monthly subscriptions if they don’t agree to let the company use their digital activity to target ads, according to a proposal the social-media giant has made to regulators. That’s Meta’s solution to the European Union rules that threaten to restrict its ability to show users personalized ads without user consent — jeopardizing its main source of revenue. (No, I wouldn’t. But I WOULD pay to stop receiving friend requests from fake profiles of friends that I already have!)

➠ Apple has a “secret police” force called the Worldwide Loyalty Team that makes sure no employees leak something. (Microsoft has the same thing, except they make sure customers can’t download anything.)
➠ Spam on social media has increased 355% in the first half of this year. ➠ These days, it seems Republicans blame Democrats and Democrats blame Republicans. (I miss the good ol’ days when we blamed everything on Miley Cyrus…!)
➠ Jimmy Carter turned 99 on Sunday. (You remember Jimmy Carter, right? One-term president . . . Democrat . . . NOT Joe Biden?
