BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Sacheen Littlefeather, the Native American actress and activist who made history when she declined the Best Actor Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando, has died at age 75. Littlefeather made history when she stepped on stage at the 1973 Oscars on behalf of “The Godfather” star Brando, who decided to boycott the award ceremony in protest at the portrayal of Native Americans on the big screen. Her short speech, for which she wore a buckskin dress and moccasins, was met with a mixture of boos and applause, and cost the budding actress, whose film credits included “Winterhawk,” and “The Trial of Billy Jack,” her career, as she was soon blacklisted from the film industry. In August, the Academy formally apologized to Littlefeather for the mistreatment she experienced during her speech and in the years that followed. While no cause of death was given, Littlefeather disclosed in a Facebook post in January last year that she had metastasized breast cancer.

★ Kim Kardashian agreed to pay a $1.26 million fine to the Securities and Exchange Commission to settle civil charges after touting the crypto asset, EthereumMax, on Instagram. The SEC charged Kardashian with failure to disclose that she was paid $250,000 to publish her post. The SEC found that Kardashian violated the anti-touting provision of the federal securities laws. Kardashian agreed to the order without admitting or denying the SEC’s findings. In addition to paying the fine, she agreed to cooperate with the SEC’s ongoing investigation. Kardashian also agreed to not promote any crypto securities for 3 years.

★ Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne were thrust into a dangerous situation in Argentina — one that left a paparazzi photographer going to police and alleging assault. Reportedly, as the 2 were leaving a restaurant in Buenos Aires early Sunday morning, there was an Uber waiting for them. As they were entering the car, a pap started taking photos aggressively, intruding in their space. Reportedly, that caused the driver to take off in fear, with Delevingne fully in the car, and Robbie halfway in and halfway out. She managed to jump clear, but the photog continued snapping. That’s when a couple of male friends jumped in to stop him. Subsequently, the photog ran off and fell, but reported to police that he was beaten up by the 2 men, whom he perceived as security guards, and hospitalized. No word on charges yet, and no comment from the stars.

★ Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik are still sharing the title “host of Jeopardy,” but they have reportedly only actually met twice. The 2 traded off hosting the game show every week or 2 last season, and will apparently do the same for the rest of Season 39. But according to a report by Entertainment Tonight, they’ve never actually been on the set together. Joking with an interviewer, Jennings said: “It’s like Superman and Clark Kent. We’re never in the same (room).” He was discussing his cameo on Bialik’s sitcom “Call Me Kat”, and revealed that that the day he shot it, it was only the second time he had ever met Bialik in person. Before that, the 2 did a promotional photoshoot for Jeopardy together.

SHOOTING THE BULL

“HEY SIRI – BUTT OUT!”
Voice assistants like Alexa and Siri can stunt a child’s social and emotional development, according to new research. Scientists at the University of Cambridge say they can impede critical thinking, empathy, compassion, and learning skills. While preliminary research on the use of voice assistants as companions for lonely adults is encouraging, when it comes to kids, the scientists found that because in normal human interactions, a child would receive constructive feedback if they were to behave inappropriately, “this is beyond the scope of a smart device.” They are concerned that some kids might already have had social development impaired as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, when they may have spent more time isolated with smart devices at home. The study authors note that gadgets can act as “friends,” boosting reading and communication skills. But the human-sounding voices have prompted concerns about possible long-term effects on youngsters’ brains at a crucial time in their growth. Three areas of concern include inappropriate responses, impeding social development, and hindering learning.
(If that’s what they’re worried about, why is no one stopping Alec Baldwin from doing homework with HIS kids?)
(Hang on – I’m gonna see what Alexa thinks about all this!)

ASTRO – GUARDS YOUR TURF:
Yes, everyone was talking over the weekend about Elon Musk showing off his humanoid robot ‘Optimus’, but on Wed., Amazon unveiled a collection of product updates. The highlight is definitely a range of new features for ‘Astro’, its 20-pound dog-like robot with cartoon-y eyes on its tablet face. It uses voice-recognition software, cameras, artificial intelligence, mapping technology and face-recognition sensors as it zooms from room to room, capturing live video and learning your habits. Soon, it will be able to detect cats and dogs in the home, take short video clips of what they’re up to when owners aren’t around, and allow owners to watch and talk to them in real time. Amazon is also adding the ability to monitor if windows or doors are left open, building on what users have been already doing, such as checking to see if the stove was left on. Astro will also now work with Amazon’s smart-doorbell company, Ring, to provide security monitoring to businesses. Astro is currently available for $999, but pricing will later jump to $1,499.
(People weren’t REALLY talking about Elon Musk’s robot over the weekend. They were talking about “The Masked Singer” and “Bachelor in Paradise”, as usual!)
(Tell them to let me know when it can walk the furry kind of dog for me…)

HANGRY SURVEY:
Most of us get “hangry” at some point just about every day, according to a survey. A recent survey of 2,000 US adults found three-quarters of people admit their hunger gets the best of them 5 times a week, resulting in an astounding 21,000+ “hangry” outbursts over the course of their lifetimes. People said they most commonly experience “hanger” as feelings of anger (of course), grumpiness, impatience and fatigue. The OnePoll survey found that the most common reasons for people’s hunger-related irritability are: mealtime delays (44%), a busy work schedule (37%), never knowing what to cook (32%) and not having time to grocery shop (29%). Adults with small kids are the “hangriest” of all — 42% of those with kids 4 and under identify as frequently “hangry.” And what do we do to satisfy our food cravings? 58% have resorted to eating their least favorite food, 42% have eaten their partner or roommate’s leftovers, 39% have eaten their kids’ snacks, and 28% say they have actually eaten discarded food.
(You know what they say: ‘One man’s trash is another man’s dinner!’)
(Fortunately [***co-host***] never lets it come to that. It’s one of the advantages of ALWAYS eating!)

A COURTIN’ WE WILL GO:
A British woman shared on Instagram the amusing tips she found in a magazine from 1958, in a feature detailing 129 ways to find a husband. Here are some highlights – or rather, lowlights… (How times have changed!)
✓ #17. Be nice to ugly men because handsome is as handsome does.
✓ #23. Go to all your high school reunions because there could be widowers there.
✓ #30. Learn to paint and set up an easel outside of an engineering school.
✓ #25. Go back to your home town because a wild boy next door might now be an eligible bachelor.
✓ #33. Carry a hat box.
✓ #38. Drop a handkerchief. It still works.
✓ #34. Wear a bandaid so he can ask what’s wrong.
✓ #40. Stand in the corner and cry softly because they’ll come over and ask what’s wrong.
(OK, ladies – now you’re ready to go bag that husband!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Two Aussies have started separate petitions to replace the picture of Queen Elizabeth II on the $5 note with “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin. And their hopes just might become reality, as the Assistant Treasury Minister recently revealed that King Charles III won’t necessarily replace his mother on the $5 note. But not so fast: So far, the petitions, which are listed on Australian Parliament House website, have gained a collective 223 signatures.

BS CHRONOMETER 10.04.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Yom Kippur”, begins, the holiest day in Judaism and Samaritanism. Primarily centred on atonement and repentance, the day’s observances consist of full fasting and self-discipline accompanied by intensive prayer and sin confessions. It ends tomorrow night.
• “Cinnamon Roll Day”, or “Kanelbullens Dag” as it’s known in Sweden, the country of the yummy sweet-bun’s presumed origin. A good excuse to scarf one with your coffee this morning. (And another after…)
• “Improve Your Office Day”, a day to focus on ways to make your work experience better. Ideas: Keep it clean; simplify; and bring a piece of outside inside. (Also: cinnamon rolls.)
• “International Toot Your Flute Day”, to encourage the idea of selling yourself and telling others how good you are, while rejecting the idea that self-promotion is ‘bragging’. (The problem is that you’ll probably have to listen to others doing the same thing!)
• “Taco Day”, an annual celebration of the great taste of the traditional Mexican dish. Most traditional tacos have corn tortillas with a soft pliable shell, but in the US and Canada, the hard-shelled U-shaped version is the most popular, and was first described in a cookbook in 1949.
• “Vodka Day”, celebrating the versatile, virtually tasteless and odorless tipple that accounts for about 25% of spirits sold in North America. There are some wild and wacky added-flavor vodkas available, including maple syrup, root beer float, s’mores, PB & J and – an homage to the breakfast cereal Fruit Loops – ‘Loopy’. More savory options include smoked salmon, chili peppers, bacon, espresso, cucumber, rose and buttered popcorn. (Buttered popcorn flavor? I’m shaken. And stirred.)
• “Golf Lover’s Day”, providing an opportunity for golf enthusiasts to swing down the fairway at least one more time this season. (I’m so bad, last time I golfed, I lost 2 balls in the ball washer!)

TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
➠A semi-truck carrying tomatoes overturned near Vacaville, California, closing traffic for hours. (Police say speed played a factor, but you know…Heinz-site…)
➠ There are now more marijuana dispensaries in Colorado than McDonald’s Restaurants. (However, if people keep smoking weed, I’m pretty sure McDonald’s will catch up!)
➠ Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovaila has been released from the hospital after that sack on Thursday Night Football. (If concussions cause short term memory loss, then what do concussions cause?)
➠ October is National Dental Hygiene Month. (You know you’re at a bad dentist when the giant tooth hanging in his office has a severe case of gingivitis!)
➠ Did you Know? Apple’s “i” prefix before their product names stood for 5 things when Steve Jobs introduced the iMac in 1998: Internet, Individual, Instruct, Inform, and Inspire. (And with Apple’s prices today, we can now add “Insane.”)
