★ Production of “Call Me Kat” has been paused following the death of Leslie Jordan. The actor — who died in a car crash on Monday at age 67 — played main cast member ‘Phil’, a newly single man who serves as baker at a café owned by Kat (Mayim Bialik). The series, which debuted in 2021, began airing its third season last month. Jordan filmed 9 episodes for the show’s latest season. In a statement, FOX Entertainment called him “the kindest person you could ever imagine.” Tonight’s episode, titled “Call Me Uncle Dad,” will pay tribute to the Emmy winner.

★ Sunday night was a big night for the “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon.” The HBO broadcast for the dark fantasy series brought in 9.3 million viewers for its 10th episode. The first season finale for the smash-hit series drew bigger numbers than all but 2 seasons of “Game of Thrones” in total viewers overall. While the finale did not draw as high as the first couple of episodes this season, it’s still the biggest audience for an HBO season finale or series finale since “Game of Thrones” ended its run back in 2019.

★ Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker have a new place to call home — and it just so happens to be the same beach house Conan O’Brien sold earlier this month. Earlier, it was reported that the comedian got an offer for the place, with panoramic ocean, Channel Island and coastline views, a few weeks ago. Now, it turns out the keys to Conan’s former Carpinteria home are now in the hands of Kourtney and Travis. It’s been reported they bought the pad — which was listed for $16.5 million — for $14.5 mil. O’Brien originally bought the 2,200-square-foot property in 2015 for $7.9 million.

• Band Aid – Despite the fact that he co-wrote the 1984 charity single ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’, Sir Bob Geldof admits that being unable to escape the song each holiday season drives him (***f-ing***) mad.” It’s not all bad, though. • Ozzy Osbourne –will perform at a music festival held in the Metaverse, available only through virtual or augmented reality. SHOOTING THE BULL
GETTING RID OF THE McRIB:
Yet another farewell tour has seemingly been announced. Only in this case, it’s the final go-round of a classic fast food menu item. McDonald’s has announced that the McRib will soon return – possibly for the last time. The chain said the fan-favorite is coming back in the US on October 31 for a limited period – and “this could be your last chance to taste it”. Quote: “Like any true farewell tour, we’re hoping this isn’t a ‘goodbye’ but a ‘see you later.’ Because as our “McRib stans” have experienced time and time again: you never know when — or if — the McRib is coming back.” McDonald’s first added the McRib to menus around Kansas City in 1981. The chain pulled it 4 years later, but it has become a cult favorite over the years, and was occasionally made available, before expanding to all US restaurants in 2020. As part of the (a-hem!) “farewell tour,” McDonald’s is selling a “nostalgic McRib merch line” beginning November 4 in its online store. LINK: https://goldenarchesunlimited.com/
(In other words, they have a lot of frozen McRib patties they need to get rid of!)
(I suppose if they’re allowed to call McNuggets “chicken”, it’s OK to call a McRib a “McRib”!)

HOUND ROUND-UP:
➢ Have you ever thought, just for a second, that your dog gave you a funny look after you made a mistake? As it turns out, yes, they’re quietly judging you for your apparent incompetence, at least if they’re female. Researchers in Japan found that female dogs “judge” people after watching them make an error or act incompetently. The team examined how both male and female dogs reacted to people who either acted competently or incompetently. The scientists concluded that female dogs tend to want to be around smarter humans, and tend to avoid those who can’t even open a jar of food. (It’s not just female dogs, researchers…definitely not just female dogs!)
➢ If you’re one of those people who created a social media page for your dog, then you’ll want to know about this: Yappy.com, an online retailer of pet gifts, is searching for its next “Chief Fluff Officer,” a doggy gig that pays up to $10,000 a year. In its ad, the company says “The successful pup will be a natural behind the camera, always happy to strike a pose and genuinely enjoy having their photo taken…as they try out our latest personalized gifts.” But the requirements are a little ruff: The Chief Fluff Officer must stay groomed and camera ready, and be “comfortable showing off their best poses, sassy struts, tail wags, tricks and expressions” online. The job also involves some travel. (Sounds pretty far-fetched to me!) LINK: https://www.yappy.com/us/blog/jobs-for-dogs-chief-fluff-officer

ON THE HOT SEAT:
Lawmakers in New Jersey want to ban automakers from charging subscription fees for built-in car features. This comes a few months after BMW sparked outrage when it began charging car owners in the UK, Germany and several other countries $18 per month to turn on their heated seats. Car manufacturers, also including Toyota and GM, are looking to increase recurring revenue by charging customers for access to features that are built into vehicles, and in many cases were included as standard equipment. But a proposed bill in New Jersey would bar manufacturers and dealers from charging subscription fees for features that are already installed in cars. The bill would make exceptions for features that incur ongoing expenses, such as satellite radio, wi-fi, traffic mapping or even Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” feature.
(Does this explain why no one around here uses their headlights?)
(Good! Because today: Heated seats – tomorrow: Headlights, probably!)
(They’ll probably pass this law, too. Remember: This is also the only US state where it’s illegal to pump your own gas!)

HOW YOUR FAV HALLOWEEN TREATS GOT THEIR NAMES:
➠ 3 Musketeers: In 1932, the 3 Musketeers bar was originally 3 smaller pieces, with individual chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry mini-bars. As a result, it was given the name of the Alexandre Dumas novel. In 1945, it became a single, chocolate nougat candy bar.
➠ Milk Duds: Intended to be balls of caramel covered in chocolate, when Hoffman and Company of Chicago first tried in 1928, they struggled to create perfectly-shaped spheres. They eventually stopped trying, and the treats were given the name Milk Duds for the milk in the chocolate and caramel — and for the “dud” of their irregular appearance.
➠ Snickers: When introduced around 1930, it was named for one of Frank Mars’ family horses. When Mars looked to export the Snickers bar to the UK, they learned the word “snickers” rhymed too easily with “knickers” – slang for underwear, so it was marketed as the “Marathon” bar – until 1990.
➠ Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups: Farmer and employee of Milton S. Hershey, Harry Reese began selling his own chocolate and peanut butter treats (made in his basement) in 1928. He called his candies Penny Cups, and sold them for 1 cent. The name changed, presumably, when the price did.
➠ Tootsie Rolls: Leo Hirshfield named his pseudo-chocolate candies after his daughter, Clara, nicknamed “Tootsie.” Hirshfield had a candy shop in Brooklyn, first making his hand-rolled chewy candies in 1896, with the idea of creating a form of chocolate that didn’t melt.
➠ Jolly Ranchers: Created in 1949, they were first sold by the Jolly Rancher Company near Denver. The name symbolized friendliness and the spirit of the American West. Because they could be sold all year, Jolly Rancher hard candies became the focus of the company by the early 1950s.
➠ Starburst: Starburst candies were first made in 1960 in the UK, and were known as Opal Fruits. Introduced in the US in 1967, they were renamed “Starburst” to reflect their juiciness and burst-like flavor. They became Starburst in the UK during the 1990s.
➠ Butterfinger: Created by the Curtis Candy Company in 1926, the candy bar was named by the winner of a contest. With its peanut butter innards and chocolate coating, it is said to have been named after Nikola “Butterfingers” Jovanovic, a self-identified klutz. The term was used to describe someone who was clumsy.

DID YOU KNOW?
People who experienced side effects to the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines such as fever, chills or muscle pain, tended to have a greater antibody response following vaccination, according to new research. Having such symptoms is associated with greater antibody responses compared with having only pain or rash at the injection site or no symptoms at all, according to a paper published in the journal JAMA Network Open. But even though some people may have experienced subtle symptoms, or even none at all, the vaccine still elicited robust immune responses in them too. Nearly all study participants exhibited a positive antibody response after completing a 2-dose vaccine series.

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Boxer Shorts Day”, a salute to their invention on this date in 1901. (I’d normally have a “boxer shorts” joke here, but I couldn’t find any “clean ones”…)
• “Black Cat Day”, to raise awareness about low adoption rates for black cats. In spite of the fact that black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck, in many historical settings and cultures, they were actually related to positive things. Today, we salute them. (Something that they will acknowledge by remaining completely aloof…)
• “Cranky Co-Workers Day”, in honor of all the complaining and just plain cranky people you work with and have to endure all year. This is the day to let them go with it, and enjoy their misery. (Is that why everyone seems to be agreeing with me today?)
• “Potato Day”, one of several ‘food holidays’ honoring the humble spud. This root vegetable became one of the New World’s most important discoveries. What’s the best way to cook ’em? Fries? Mashed? Baked? Au Gratin w/Gruyere & Creme Fraiche?
• “American Beer Day”, beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the United States, where about 9,000 breweries produce more than 6.4 billion gallons annually, worth over $100 million.
• “World Occupational Therapy Day”, celebrating Occupational Therapists (OTs), who enhance children and adults’ abilities to engage in daily roles and activities.
• “Navy Day”, paying tribute to all US men and women who serve as sailors. October 27, 1775 is considered by many to be the birthday of the US Navy. Officially, this celebration has been replaced by Armed Forces Day in May.
• “World Day for Audiovisual Heritage”, to raise awareness of the significance and preservation risks of recorded sound and audiovisual documents (films, sound and video recordings, radio and television programs). LINK: https://www.unesco.org/en/days/audiovisual-heritage
