BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Saturday Night Live” poked some fun at its own expense during its Season 48 opening skit. Host Miles Teller portrayed former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning, alongside cast member Andrew Dismukes as Eli Manning in the cold opening. They provided commentary for the show’s opening skit, set in Mar-a-Lago, a spoof of the duo’s “Manningcast” on Monday Night Football. James Austin Johnson reprised his impression of former president Donald Trump, and Teller, as Peyton Manning said: “Oh, good. Trump sketch. Way to mix it up!”, making fun of the politically motivated direction the show has taken in past seasons. After also making fun of the recent exit of some of the show’s most beloved cast members, Teller and Dismukes then broke down the “stats,” noting 14 attempted jokes with only “one mild laugh and two chuckles.”

★ Actor and comedian Roy Wood Jr. could soon find himself sitting behind “The Daily Show” anchor desk on a full-time basis following Trevor Noah’s departure. Noah announced on Thursday’s show that he’ll soon exit the show after 7 years. Executives are now eyeing up potential replacements, and it seems as though one of the top contenders in the running is the 43-year-old comedian. Wood Jr. joined the show in 2015 and has become one of the show’s leading correspondents. He’s also currently in demand on the stand-up circuit, after a spike in popularity thanks to his starring in the movie “Confess, Fletch.”

★ The box office’s two newest entrants saw very different results. Horror film “Smile” got off to a good start at the #1 spot, while the rom-com “Bros” is looking like a flop. Smile opened with a take of $8.2 million Friday for an estimated $19 million opening weekend. That puts Parker Finn’s feature debut past its $17 million budget and on course to turn a solid profit. Bros opened at #4, with an estimated $4.75 million weekend take. The first LGBT romantic comedy from a major studio fell far below projections of an $8-10 million, in spite of the fact that it earned an A on CinemaScore, and a 91% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

SHOOTING THE BULL
FAMILIAL STORY:
Bad news, Moms and Dads: If you’re feeling the effects of inflation, your kids are, too. Financial experts say that because of increasing prices, children and teens should be seeing hikes in their allowances. Stats show the average American kids enjoys a weekly stipend of $12.76 a week, with older teens averaging closer to $25. But if you decide not to give kids your kids a raise, it can be a teachable moment. Houston financial planner Jason McGarraugh says he’s using this inflationary period to teach his 10 and 12-year-old daughters how to make choices with the money they do have, and show them that “Just because prices have gone up, it doesn’t mean you will get an automatic raise.” He says both are making adjustments to their spending habits.
(Which he’s good with…at least until Father’s Day!)
(I’m not sure if my kids are getting a raise. After all, they have the advantage of “doing nothing from home”!)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ Beginning today, McDonald’s restaurants in the US are selling Adult Happy Meals — complete with a free toy. The Cactus Plant Flea Market Box is a collaboration between McD’s and the famous streetwear brand, and features either a Big Mac or a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, as well as a soda and fries. Inside will also be “one of 4 collectible figurines” of McDonald’s mascots Grimace, the Hamburglar and Birdie, as well as a Cactus Buddy. The meals will be available through Oct. 30. (As a parent of 4, to me, any meal NOT at McDonalds is a happy meal!)
❑ Spam is cool again. The 85-year-old canned block of meat has undergone a cultural reinvention. Manufacturer Hormel has sold a record amount for 7 straight years, and 2022 is on pace for another milestone. Spam is a trending ingredient on TikTok and on the menu at some fine-dining restaurants. Why? How? Spam’s popularity in Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific Island cuisine has influenced its growth. As more immigrants arrived in the US, and ethnic cuisines entered the mainstream, the slab of cooked pork that has long been stigmatized as fake meat, has spiked in popularity. Edgy ad campaigns also have attracted a broader customer range than the Baby Boomers who grew up eating it, sometimes reluctantly. What’s more, according to Robert Ku, an associate professor of Asian and Asian American studies at Binghamton University, “A lot of celebrity chefs have been Asian and Asian American, and reintroduced Spam to a new audience.” (They also tried e-marketing, but for some reason, no one reads their emails!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Remember the Ice Bucket Challenge? If you were on Facebook in 2014, you might have even participated in it. You’d be tagged by a friend to either drop a bucket of ice water on your head OR donate to the ALS Association (or both). The trend raised awareness of ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that impacts muscle movement. It also raised $115 million for the ALS Association. Now, 8 years later, the FDA has approved a new drug to treat the disease, after money raised through the challenge was used to fund a study of the drug. It’s still not clear how effective the drug is, but ALS patients have been eagerly awaiting its approval. All this, thanks to a viral Facebook challenge! (And so much more wholesome than eating Tide pods!)
➢ When Bryan Tsiliacos turned 29, he decided to channel his anxieties about his approaching 30th birthday into something good. The San Francisco resident says he decided to write down all the things he was grateful for, and at that moment, realized that every wonderful thing that has happened to him was “thanks to the support and generosity of others.” To pay it forward, he decided to complete 30 acts of kindness before turning 30 next year. Thus, the “30 Acts by 30” challenge was born. So far, among his random acts of kindness, he has made more than 400 desserts for firefighters in San Jose, and arranged donations of 150 supply kits for middle schools in Oakland, where about $12,000 worth of supplies were donated by 18 sponsor companies. Tsiliacos has been documenting his acts of kindness on social media, and hopes others will be inspired to give back as well. Follow @30actsby30 on Instagram for updates.

MOST AWESOME 2022 POP-CULTURE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES:
⇒ Joseph Quinn in “Stranger Things”: The ‘Eddie Munson’ character developed a passionate fanbase in season 4, and his look is easy to put together. All you need is a curly wig, a Hellfire Club shirt, ripped jeans and a denim jacket. (And the ability to play Metallica riffs on guitar?)
⇒ Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie from the “Barbie” movie: Though the movie doesn’t come out until next year, their neon rollerblading outfits — captured by paparazzi while they were filming – were definitely meme-worthy. You’ll feel totally tubular in ’80s-style workout clothes with matching visors (rollerblades optional).
⇒ Miles Teller in “Top Gun: Maverick”: It was Teller’s character ‘Rooster’, the son of ‘Goose’ from the first Top Gun film, who took over TikTok. Grab a button-down shirt, aviator sunglasses and a fake mustache, and finish it off with a top-volume rendition of ‘Great Balls of Fire’.
⇒ Alexa Demie in “Euphoria”: The show’s second season spawned several iconic looks, but nothing tops Maddy’s black cutout dress with matching gloves from the first episode. Add her winged eyeliner and brown lipstick for the finishing touch.
⇒ Tatiana Maslany in “She-Hulk”: Simply cover yourself in green paint and sport a business suit to get the perfect balance of superhero and lawyer chic. (Somehow, I don’t think I could rock it quite the way she does!)
⇒ Honorable mentions: Austin Butler in “Elvis”, Sebastian Stan and Lily James in “Pam & Tommy”.
(What’s YOUR awesome Halloween costume idea, that we promise not to share with ANYONE?)

DID YOU KNOW?
NASA has come up with an interactive map that allows budding astronauts to experience the sights and even the sounds of Mars. Users can “hike” across and around the red planet’s Jezero Crater using Virtual Reality, a laptop or their phone, and if they stand beside the Mars Rover, they can even hear it working. The map encompasses the areas surrounding the landing site of NASA’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. Views can be taken in from large scales to centimeter-close detail. Users can also traverse steep slopes and stand on top of the Mars rover at ground level – just like street view in Google Maps – and stare across the surrounding desert landscape. • “Techies Day”, saluting those who know their way around the technology that is essential to our daily lives. Also, a day when students are encouraged to consider a career in technology. (There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don’t…)
• “Blue Shirt Day”, also known as “World Day of Bullying Prevention”, the kickoff to National Bullying Prevention Month. We’re all encouraged to wear blue shirts to highlight bullying prevention, and in solidarity with those who experience bullying in all its forms, such as cyberbullying, cruelty, racism, and homophobia. Blue is seen as bringing calmness and peace, as well as importance and confidence.
• “Look at the Leaves Day”, a day to admire the color changes of Autumn. (Now imagine the leaves a foot-and-half deep all over your backyard and a rake in your blistered hand …)
• “Caramel Custard Day”, caramel custard is a rich, flavorful dessert that originated in Europe. The Ancient Romans experimented with the binding properties of eggs in their cooking, but custard as we know it didn’t emerge until the Middle Ages. (If it has caramel in it, I’m in!)
• “Family TV Show Day”, a time for everyone to gather round the TV for the privilege of learning how wonderful this brand of air freshener and that roll of toilet paper are.
• “Mean Girls Appreciation Day”, any day is the perfect day to quote “Mean Girls”, but today’s date is a particularly noteworthy one for fans of the 2004 hit movie.
