Can You Believe This Sheet?

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ He didn’t give in to “pier pressure”. Colin Jost is denying he was smoking ganja when he and his former “Saturday Night Live” co-star Pete Davidson decided to purchase a decommissioned Staten Island ferry. Jost wrote on Instagram: “Is it worse that I was actually stone-cold sober when we bought the ferry?” He also posted a screenshot of media coverage of Davidson’s claim that the comedians were “very stoned” when they made the nautical purchase in January 2022. Jost also wrote: “We’re excited to prove the non-believers wrong. You’re going to be BEGGING to get on this ferry in 2 years. Mark my words.” The funnymen — who bought the vessel for $280,000 with other investors — planned to turn it into an event space, but the project has stalled, for unknown reasons.

★ Carrie Fisher’s last movie will finally see an audience — 7 years after her death. The “Star Wars” icon wrapped filming for “Wonderwell” 6 weeks before she died on Dec. 27, 2016. Now, the movie is slated to premiere in theaters on June 23, followed by a digital release. The film’s official synopsis reads: “A coming-of-age fairy tale set between modern-day Italy and an imaginary realm just beyond, ‘Wonderwell’ follows a naive and inquisitive 12-year-old girl on a thrilling journey that transforms her world forever.” Director Vlad Marsavin said the film took 7 years to come together due to Fisher’s unexpected death, the pandemic, and visual effects challenges that stretched the budget.

★ Samuel L. Jackson has responded to going viral. In case you’ve been MIA, the 74-year-old had social media abuzz during the Tony Awards after his deadpan reaction to losing an award made the rounds. And as the “Incredibles” actor recently quipped, he isn’t quite ready to become a meme anytime soon. He told E! News: “You know, I’m that guy. They’re always looking at me. I don’t even know if that was even the moment that they say it was. My face changes from time to time.” As Jackson explained, his best guess is that he gave a reassuring nod after hearing the winner, not the perceived scowl. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3cr6n238

★ Kevin Spacey says in a new interview that he’ll be hired for more acting projects if he’s cleared of sexual assault charges in London following the trial that’s set to begin on June 28. The Oscar winner was charged a year ago in London with 4 counts of sexual assault, relating to alleged incidents that took place between 2005-13. ZEITmagazin quotes him as saying: “It’s a time in which a lot of people are very afraid that if they support me, they will be canceled. But I know that there are people right now who are ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London. The second that happens, they’re ready to move forward.”

★ Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan nearly had a classic-rom-com trifecta. The pair famously starred in 1993’s “Sleepless in Seattle” and re-teamed for 1998’s “You’ve Got Mail”. And Hanks’ wife Rita Wilson says he was also offered the lead in 1988’s “When Harry Met Sally”, opposite Ryan…a role that eventually went to Billy Crystal. And Mrs. Hanks has just revealed the reason behind the lost trinity of rom-coms. In a podcast appearance, she said: “He turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happy to be not married. So, he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, ‘I’m so happy.'”
★ Would you eat your favorite TV binge? Netflix is going to put that to the test, as it expands into an entirely new category: the restaurant business. The streamer will launch a pop-up restaurant in LA on June 30. Called “Netflix Bites” it’ll be built around an “elevated dining experience” featuring chefs from various Netflix shows. Among those participating are Curtis Stone, Ming Tsai and Andrew Zimmern of “Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend”, Dominique Crenn of “Chef’s Table” and “Iron Chef” and Rodney Scott and Ann Kim of “Chef’s Table”, plus others. There will also be cocktails designed by the mixologists from “Drink Masters”.

BS MUSIC NOTES:

In an interview, Lovato said that educating people “was absolutely exhausting…But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

DOG’S LIFE:
What’s the best way to keep your dog happy and healthy as he ages? Let him run with the pack. With kids? Not so much, according to a new study. In the largest survey of its kind, researchers polled more than 21,000 dog owners to determine what health factors are important to keep canines aging well alongside their humans. From the survey, 5 key factors emerged that impact a dog’s health: neighbourhood stability, household income, social time with children, social time with animals, and owner age. But by far, the effect of social support (canine companionship) was 5 times stronger than financial and other factors. The study concluded: “This shows that for dogs, like many other animals, socialization is important to health”. But the researchers were surprised to note that there were negative effects on a dog’s health if there were children in the household.
(If dogs are anything like me, those negative effects from children are mostly high blood pressure and grey hair!)
(…probably due to all those chips and cookies that fall from little hands!)

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS:
❑ Some day, every seat on an airplane could be a window seat! New concept designs show how travelers will be able to gaze at the stars ABOVE in future airplanes outfitted with an enormous (by car standards) moonroof. Aerospace giant Airbus are showing off their vision of next-gen cabins, which include an all-round view of clouds, as you jet through them. The Airspace Cabin Vision 2035+ concept also lets passengers tap on smart interactive windows that show travel time and let you explore your destination city. The company also says passengers will enjoy a greater choice of meals, thanks to new pre-ordering concepts, which may involve passengers collecting their meals at the gate, to reduce waste. (Yeah, I REALLY want a window overhead — in the middle of a lightning storm!)
❑ Emojis, of all things, could soon start popping up in medical communications such as emails and letters from doctors, according to new research. While that may sound kind of strange (and even unprofessional), study authors say these pictograms are renowned for their “universal” appeal and may be able to replace traditional communication methods and engage more patients. Researchers from the University of California-Riverside propose that employing these expressive icons in healthcare communications could have several benefits, including universal recognition and accessibility across diverse populations. (Still, it may seem harsh when you get your test results back, and they begin with the “dead guy” face!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Teachers in Switzerland are complaining that too many students are wearing diapers in class these days — because they don’t know how to use the toilet. And it’s not the 4-and 5-year-olds they’re talking about. Dagmar Rösler, head of the Swiss Federation of Teachers, told a newspaper: “When 11-year-olds come to school in diapers, that’s a worrying trend.” The children’s lack of knowledge becomes a burden for many teachers, who have to assist students with soaked diapers. The average age to potty train children is between 18-24 months, according to Mayo Clinic, but an educational scientist said: “Some parents let it slide because diapers are a convenient relief.” (Literally!)
➢ There will be no more going to Hel on bus 666. The bus to the town of Hel on Poland’s Baltic coast has long been popular with tourists. But the local bus operator, PKS Gdynia, has responded to complaints by announcing its decision to change the route number from 666 to 669. Some religious groups, it seems, had a problem with a route number signifying the devil being associated with a bus leading to a place that sounds like the word “hell” in English. The 666 bus shuttled between the village of Dębki and the town of Hel, a popular tourist destination, during the summertime. (The bus’ nickname “Handbasket”, will remain painted on the side, at least until someone figures that one out!)

DID YOU KNOW?
If you’re looking for a big win at the casino this weekend, bring along your earbuds – and some Electronic Dance Music. Recent scientific studies have revealed that having music in the background can significantly enhance your performance in activities such as playing slots. In particular, EDM stands out as a genre that can work wonders on your brain as you gamble. Originally created for nightclubs, festivals, and raves, EDM is generally regarded as happy and upbeat. Scientists say the music can enhance your gameplay by setting the right mood, improving your focus, and give you the necessary ‘oomph’ to get out of your comfort zone as you spin those casino reels. The music also assists with online gambling, the experts, say. (If you need extra ‘oomph’ to push a button, I’d be worried about more than what music they’re playing at the casino…)

BS CHRONOMETER 06.16.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “National Flip Flop Day”, Flip flops go back further than you may think. They were depicted on ancient Egyptian murals around 4,000 B.C. However, there is also evidence that they were worn up to 15,000 years ago, during the Stone Age. (And political “flip-flops” go back even further than that…)
• “Recess at Work Day”, started in 2004 because in order for workers to be productive, happy, and loyal, they need to have a fun work environment. Today is a starting point in improving employee morale, happiness, health, wellness, and productivity. (How about some “Reese’s Pieces” for recess?)
• “Fresh Veggies Day”, urging us to eat healthy by including fresh veggies with every meal and snack. Better still, be a vegetarian for a day. Your body will like it. (My top 5 favorite vegetables: 1. Tomato 2. Lettuce.)
• “Fudge Day”, celebrating the ooey-gooey treat that can be inhaled warm or cold. Fudge is said to be a result of the late-night cravings of Vassar College girls in the early 20th century.
• “International Day of the African Child”, initiated by the Organization of African Unity in 1991. It honors those who participated in the Soweto Uprising on this date in 1976. In South Africa, it’s celebrated as “Youth Day”.
• “World Sea Turtle Day”, to highlight the importance of sea turtles. Not only are they beautiful, they show incredible perseverance and resiliency – after all, they’ve been nesting on beaches for millions of years.
• “Vinegar Day”, this common household product brightens many salads, is used in canning, and can shine up a window, too! Varieties include: Apple cider * Balsamic * Beer * Cane * Coconut * Date * Distilled vinegar * East Asian black * Flavored vinegar * Fruit * Honey * Job’s tears * Kiwifruit * Kombucha * Malt * Palm * Raisin* Rice * Spirit vinegar * Sherry vinegar * White * Wine *

SATURDAY-
• “Eat Your Vegetables Day”, an observance likely begun by somebody’s Mother somewhere. (Yesterday was “Fresh Veggies Day”, so today we should eat ’em from a can?)
• “World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought”, to promote awareness of international efforts to combat it. (I’m a waaay bigger fan of the much less well-known “Dessertification and Draught” day, which I celebrate every Saturday…)
• “Apple Strudel Day”, the oldest known recipe for apple strudel (Apfelstrudel) is from Austria. It was handwritten in 1696.
• “Global Garbage Man Day”, actually, it was re-branded in 2019 as “Waste & Recycling Workers Week”. Whether they are “Garbage Men”, “Sanitation Specialists” or “Waste Management Professionals”, thank them today (after all, they’re the ones who know about all the empty bottles you hide at the bottom of your recycle bin…)
• “World Croc Day” (the reptile, not the shoe), part of a global awareness campaign to highlight the plight of endangered crocodiles and alligators around the world.

SUNDAY-
• “Father’s Day”, celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June in about 90 countries, as a day to honor Dad and appreciate all he does. Many other countries have a day for dad at other times in the year. The first observance of a “Father’s Day” was on July 5, 1908, in a church in Fairmont, West Virginia. (***See “How Dad Are You?”, below***)
• “Autistic Pride Day”, an annual celebration of the ‘neuro-diversity’ of people on the autism spectrum that’s designed to shift views of autism from ‘disease’ to ‘difference’. LINK: https://autismsociety.org/
• “International Picnic Day”. It’s a pseudo-holiday for humans, but a regular working day for ants.
• “Panic Day”, when you’re encouraged to run around all day telling people you just can’t handle it anymore. (In other words … just a regular day…)
• “Go Fishing Day” which, if you can pull it off, would allow you to post a sign on your door saying ‘Gone Fishing’. Work, after all, is for people who don’t know how to fish.
• (Perhaps it’s NOT a coincidence that today is also…) “International Sushi Day”, the annual observance conceived originally as a Facebook page. If you’re looking for an excuse to eat raw fish, this seems as good a day as any. LINK: http://bit.ly/10Xizp
• “Splurge Day”, when we’re encouraged to go out and do something indulgent. If funds or guilt were no problem, what would you blow bucks on? (I’m not sure, but it would DEFINITELY involve bacon…)

TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
⇒ Toy Company Mattel is building a water theme park in Arizona during one of the biggest droughts in recent times. (Arizona needs a waterpark like Chris Paul needs a trophy case!)
⇒ Amazon Prime Days begin July 10, and I cannot wait. (It’s perfect for the person who’s been eyeballing that USB-Powered Nose-hair-trimmer, but doesn’t want to pay 10% more on any other day…)

⇒ Paul McCartney turns 81 this Sunday. (McCartney was knighted in 1997. He’s one of only a few musicians to be called “Sir.” There’s McCartney, Elton John and, of course, Mix-a-Lot…)
⇒ Donald Trump turned 77 on Wednesday. (He’s sad his parents aren’t around anymore — because he used to call them on his birthday to congratulate them…)
