SHOOTING THE BULL

PLANE SMART:
Well, why not? On a long flight, most of us try to sleep anyway, so Air New Zealand is promising bunk beds in the skies. The company’s reimagined economy-class seating arrangement, Skynest, won the cabin concepts award at this year’s prestigious Crystal Cabin Award, which celebrates innovation in airplane cabin interiors. The beds-on-board concept, set to debut in 2024, works like this: 6 sleep pods in a bunk bed configuration will be available on select planes. The pods will be located between the economy and premium economy cabins on some long-haul routes, including the 17-hour direct between New York City and Auckland, which is among the longest flights in the world. Passengers will be able to pre-book a slot in the pod for US$254-$380 (NZ$400-$600) for a 4-hour block, in addition to the regular cost of their ticket. The cabin crew will change out the bedding after each use. Why 4-hour blocks? The airline found through research that “A typical sleep cycle is around 90 minutes, so a 4-hour session gives the opportunity for customers to wind down, fall asleep and wake up.”
(Just an hour and a half to wind down? These people obviously don’t have TikTok!)
(I can definitely see a use for this. Especially when you consider that after eating airplane food, I usually feel the need to lie down…)

WHAT DAD WANTS:
According to a survey, 57% of dads call Father’s Day their favorite day of the year. And you’ve still got time to make sure your dad feels the same. According to a survey (conducted in the US), the average person plans to spend a record $196.23 on dear old dad for Father’s Day this year, up from $171.79 last year. 40% will be getting their dad something practical, like socks or a tool kit. Other top gift ideas for dad this Sunday include (in order) a meal outing (such as dinner or brunch), clothing, gift cards, electronics, and personal care items. And nearly one-third (29%) of those celebrating Father’s Day are planning to give a gift of experience, such as tickets to a sporting event or concert.
…by the way, in a survey, the top 5 gifts that dads said they DON’T want are, in order, clothing, books and CDs, greeting cards, personal care items…and gift cards(!!)
…and interestingly, 64% of dads specifically said they don’t want anything that says “World’s Best Dad “on it!
(Well, whatever MY kids get for me this Father’s Day, I hope I can afford it!)
(Did anyone think of asking Dad what he actually wants?)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ Scientists say that after identifying a link between the risk of cancer and clusters of chemicals in an individual’s cells, a screening program that could detect tumors DECADES IN ADVANCE is on the horizon. The breakthrough offers hope of developing personalized vaccines for vulnerable patients. Lead author Professor Simon Conn, of Flinders University in Australia, said: “Environmental and genetic factors have long been believed as the major contributors to cancer”, and this development makes “the likelihood of curing cancers…much higher.”
➢ A support group in England is using sheep to help people improve their mental health. “EWE Talk” was launched last year with just one sheep – but now has a flock of 7 sheep and 2 goats to help children and adults who are struggling. ‘Valais Blacknose’ sheep are known for their dog-like temperament – making them the perfect animal to provide emotional support. The goal of the founders of EWE Talk is to visit schools and educational settings with fluffy friends, but they also welcome children struggling with mental health onto the farm. And on some occasions, they’ve even transported the flock to locals in need of emotional support. LINK: https://youtu.be/VOiMECzUlZA

ROAD TRIPPIN’ AND CHIP DIPPIN’:
Today is “Jerky Day” (***See “Reasons to Party, below***) And although a poll of men once named jerky the ‘Best Road Snack’, the stuff didn’t show up in a new survey asking what snacks make-or-break a road trip. Conducted by OnePoll, over 2,000 Americans were asked several questions about hitting the open road. Snacks were found to be the most important aspect of taking a trip (38%), followed by the company along for the ride (34%) and the stops along the way (30%). And better than 7 in 10 (71%) agreed that embarking on a road trip gives then a “hall pass” to eat as many snacks as they’d like. And now, the info you’ve been waiting for…the top road trip snacks, in order…
1. (tie) Chips – 47%
1. (tie) Chocolate – 47%
3. Cookies – 44%
4. Nuts/seeds – 43%
5. Candy – 42%
6. Fresh/processed fruit – 40%
7. Granola bars – 38%
(Am I the only one who still considers a Big Mac and fries a “snack” anymore?)

DID YOU KNOW?
What to do with 1 million pennies? That’s the question facing John Reyes and his wife after a discovery they made in her father’s former home in Los Angeles. The pennies, with a face value of $10,000, were found in a crawlspace in the basement while the family was cleaning out the home. After months of vainly searching for a bank that would take that many pennies, Reyes listed the coins on a resale app, asking for $25,000. He has since reconsidered, and is looking for expert advice on how to proceed. They believe one of those pennies could be a collector’s item, potentially worth millions. In 2010, a 1943 penny sold for a $1.7 million. Other rare pennies have been sold for thousands of dollars.
