Bullseye!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jamie Foxx says he is ready to give the full scoop on the mysterious medical emergency that landed him in an Atlanta hospital last year — in his upcoming one-man stage show. He dropped the news on Instagram, his way of promoting “One More Chance: An Evening with Jamie Foxx”, where he promises to “share his journey through a serious health scare, filled with humor, heart, and inspiration!” The words “What Had Happened Was” are splashed across a black background in a separate frame. Foxx was rushed to hospital for a medical complication in April 2023, but has kept the details and diagnosis under wraps. His stage show is set for Oct. 3-5, and ticket details and location will be announced “soon”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/ypyrw9bn

★ Did ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ spring for an updated smile? Johnny Depp flashed what looked like new pearly whites after his less-than-perfect teeth went viral last year. In an Instagram video, the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star was seen on vacation in the Bahamas. He interacted with patrons and staff at a beachside bar in Exuma, flashing a sparkling, toothy grin several times for those filming. Depp was the center of attention at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival when pics of him walking the red carpet took the internet by storm, with many focused on his discolored and crooked chompers. Depp reps did not respond to a request for comment. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/5xtrprfp

★ The ghost with the most is set to inject a little life into the sluggish box office. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 film about a pesky poltergeist, is eyeing a huge $100-110 million opening weekend. Based on those estimated ticket sales, it could rank alongside 2017’s “It” ($123 million) and 2019’s “It: Chapter 2” ($91 million) as the biggest September debuts of all time. Distributor Warner Bros is projecting a more conservative $80 million to start – and anything more than that would be scary-good, given the film’s $100 million production budget.

★ Joaquin Phoenix spoke about revisiting his controversial “Joker” diet for the film’s sequel while at Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. During a press conference for “Folie à Deux”, Phoenix said he was hesitant to give details of his diet, “but this time it felt a bit more complicated…because there was so much dance rehearsal…which I didn’t have last time.” He also pointed out that he is 49-years-old now, and “probably shouldn’t do this again.” Phoenix made headlines in 2020 when he revealed he lost 52 pounds preparing for his role as ‘Arthur Fleck’ in the first film.

★ The animated ‘Barney’ reboot will premiere Oct. 14 on Max. This will mark the first time in 14 years that the iconic purple dinosaur is returning to TV. The new iteration, “Barney’s World” will be set in a playground where Barney is joined by his dino-friends ‘Billy’ and ‘Baby Bop’, as well as 3 kid best friends. The Oct. 14 debut will be followed by a premiere on Cartoon Network on Oct. 18. Some episodes will also be available on YouTube starting Oct. 11.

SHOOTING THE BULL

NEW MOVIES THIS WEEK:
• “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (PG-13, Dark Comedy/Fantasy): After a family tragedy, 3 generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her daughter accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.  (Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder) Tomatometer: 81%
• “The Front Room” (R, Horror/Thriller: A newly pregnant couple are forced to take in an ailing, estranged stepmother. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere. (Kathryn Hunter, Brandy Norwood, Andrew Burnap) No Tomatometer rating.

‘BRB’ BARBIE:
Today is “Barbie Doll” day, and as we saw last summer with the release of the movie, ‘Barbie’ still has a hold on the imaginations of girls of a certain age. With that in mind, some experts say a new Barbie-branded phone just might be the thing to help beat teen smartphone addiction. Manufacturer HMD, which also makes phones for Nokia, has launched the very pink and very basic device (imagine the classic Nokia flip phone. It’s like that – but pink!). There’s no front camera, only one game, and very limited access to the internet. HMD says it is trying to tap into what it calls a “surge” of people wanting a smaller “digital impact” on their lives. In a partnership with Mattel, the company is looking to capitalize on the emerging trend in recent years of embracing so-called ‘dumb phones’, which offer only basic text, call and camera features. The concept of taking a “digital detox” has become more popular over the last few years as consumers have sought to limit harmful effects of social media. A reviewer used the Barbie-phone for a week, and reported that it has no social media and can’t receive anything more advanced than SMS messages. That means no text messages with “read receipts” or the function to see when someone is typing – and of course the act of messaging happens much slower than with a touchscreen. As a result, she “ended up calling more people than usual, which perhaps was no bad thing.” Others, however, say instead of limiting the features on kids’ phones, we should be teaching them how to use their devices in a healthier and more controlled way. [***See “Barbie Doll Day”, below***] LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4cffeby7
(Yeah, most teen girls would loooove this thing – for about a half-hour!)
(Sunday is “Star Trek Day”. Do you think a Spock phone might help too?)

RUGRAT REGRET:
Have you ever wished that you gave your kid a different name? According to a new survey, about 1 in 10 of us do. The poll of 450 parents by BabyCenter, found that 15% of them actually now prefer to address their child by their middle name. 20% feel their child’s name is too long, so they call them by a nickname. The good news: While 21% of moms said they regretted their child’s name in the first year, only 6% had doubts about it after that. Oh, and 6% were so put off by the name they gave their child that they had it legally changed.
(I’m sure glad my parents didn’t change MY name. It’s the only thing I had as a kid that wasn’t a hand-me-down!)
(You know what I find weird about names? How is it that every kid ever who is named “Buzz” or “Bubba” eventually decided to get into radio?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A TV news helicopter crew spotted a boy who had been reported missing – but he was actually on the roof of his apartment building — playing hooky. The 9-year-old left his Brooklyn NY apartment at around 7am, but didn’t show up at school. His parents called cops, who put out a description of the missing child. The CBS TV station sent a helicopter to the scene and a reporter spotted the boy on the rooftop of his family’s building. Station employees called police, and the helicopter crew hovered overhead until they arrived. (And now that kid knows exactly how Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s kid is gonna feel on HER first day of school – if they ever have one!)
➢ A couple just wanted to eke out some quality time together, but it ended going horribly wrong when their vehicle rolled into a river. A Philadelphia police spokesperson said the two were “enjoying each other’s company” in the early hours of Aug. 28, before the car entered the water. Cops believe the pair was “getting busy” when the vehicle was accidentally shifted into gear. Both were able to escape the vehicle before it rolled into the water, and they were unharmed. They have not been identified by police. (But they were identified by their respective neighbors, as: “Those morons who are too cheap to get a room!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Table for one? It’s becoming more common than ever. According to OpenTable, solo dining reservations in the US are up 29% over the last 2 years. And a survey revealed this summer that 60% of us have dined alone at a restaurant at least once in the last year. Experts believe the likely reasons for the spike in solo feasts are a combination of remote work and more people marrying later, thus living alone. (And remember: Just because you’re dining alone, no one’s going to stop you from ordering the “dinner for 2”!)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.06.24

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Coffee Ice Cream Day”, offering a wake-up and a treat all in one. Although the first recipe, named “egg coffee” and consisting of cream, crushed ice, and coffee syrup, first appeared in 1919, today’s version is made by dissolving fine coffee grains in a hot ice cream base.
• “Lazy Moms Day”, a day for hard-working moms to do whatever they want. (Right after they finish the laundry, get dinner ready, bathe the kids and help with their homework…)
• “Fight Procrastination Day – Do It! Day”, a day to get things done. (Or at least finish one of those things you meant to do on this day LAST year!)
• “Barbie Doll Day”, marking the anniversary of the day that the Barbie doll first went on sale in 1959. Barbie was thought up by Ruth Handler, whose husband Elliot was one of Mattel’s founders.
• “Read a Book Day”, a day to take time out of your busy life, and relax with a good book. (Because who relaxes with a bad book??)
• “Food Bank Day”, created in 2017 to commemorate 50 years since the founding of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the first food bank in the world, by John van Hengel, in Phoenix AZ.
• “Great Egg Toss Day”, probably Humpty Dumpty’s least favorite day! (***See “Today’s Records”, below***)
• “Chianti Day”, because why NOT have another day designated for wine drinking?
• “Wear Teal Day”, a day when teal is worn to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
• “Bring Your Manners to Work Day”, an annual reminder that good etiquette eases relationships in the workplace. (What does a co-worker do that drives you round the bend?)

SATURDAY:
• “World Beard Day”, all about promoting and elevating the global status of the beard. Today, it is supposedly customary for the bearded members of a family to relax and partake in no jobs or chores. The beardless traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. (Will that happen at my place? “Not by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin!”)
• “Salami Day”, started in 2006 by the Salami Appreciation Society, to honor the cured Italian sausage that is fermented and air-dried. LINK: http://www.salamiday.com
• “National Tailgating Day”, since 2016, to celebrate and participate in that great American pursuit of hanging out in a stadium parking lot for food, fun, friends, football, and large amounts of beer and bratwurst. LINK: https://tailgating-challenge.com/national-tailgating-day/
• Beer Lover’s Day”, dedicated to beer, and to everyone who loves to drink it! Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. The Babylonians, Egyptians and Greeks and Romans all made beer. And during the Middle Ages, due to contamination, beer was a much safer drink than water. (And exactly how should we celebrate this fine occasion?)
• “Aunt’s Day”, celebrating the relationship they have with their nieces and nephews! Did you have aunts who spoiled you when you were a child, maybe bringing you special treats and gifts? Did she look after you sometimes, or take you somewhere every year as a tradition? (Did she let you get away with things as long as you promised “not to tell your mother”?)
• “Feel the Love Day”. Do something extra special for a partner, relative, or friend today, or simply tell them, “I love you.” (Wow — Including Valentine’s Day, that’ll be twice in one year!)
• “Neither Rain nor Snow Day”, commemorating the motto of the US Postal Service – “Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds”. (Just dogs…)

SUNDAY:
• “Star Trek Day”, the first episode of the original TV Series aired in the US on September 8, 1966, 2 days after the debuted in Canada. Set in the 23rd century, it followed the Starship USS Enterprise, captained by ‘James T. Kirk’, who was played by William Shatner. The showed gained a cult following and went on to spawn 5 other TV series, an animated show, and a bunch of movies.
• “Actors Day”. Today, take part in your local theater, whether it’s a high school, college, or a youth theater in your community. Or simply support your local theater by donating money, theater props, or buying tickets to see a play. (The fact that Actors Day takes place the same day that William Shatner debuted in “Star Trek” is purely coincidental!)
• “Ampersand Day”, a celebration of the ‘&’ symbol. The term is believed to have evolved circa 1820-30 as a contraction of ‘and per se’.
• “International Literacy Day”, established by the UN in 1967 to promote reading & writing programs. Worldwide, 1-in-5 adults are illiterate, and 75 million children are not in school. Millions leave school without a level of literacy adequate for productive participation in today’s information society. LINK: https://en.unesco.org/commemorations/literacyday
• “World Physical Therapy Day”, initiated in 1951 to recognize the work that physical therapists do for their patients and community (when you need ’em, you love ’em!)
• “Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses Day”, honoring the special RNs who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to patients with cancer and blood disorders.
• “Pardon Day”, a day to seek or offer forgiveness where needed. (My favorite word is “pardon”. But it becomes a problem when people ask me what my favorite word is…)
• It’s also “Hug Your Hound Day”, “Pet Memorial Day”, and “Grandparents Day”, just in case you need some good feels this weekend!
