IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS (I THINK…):
What is the absolute WORST gift that someone could get for you? In a poll of 2,000 adults, the answer turned out to be…a diet plan! That was closely followed by cufflinks and soap on a string. Also high-up on the list of “thanks-but-no-thanks” gifts were: bad romance novels, hankies, and aftershave. According to the OnePoll survey, when confronted with an unwanted present, 27% graciously accept it, and 17% pretend to be delighted. A tenth said they show no emotion and simply ‘do nothing’, and 21% have even had a falling-out with a loved one over a terrible present. And what does one actually do with a garbage-gift? 26% donate them to charity, 18% re-gift them, and 14% say they simply hide them in their home.
(…usually until that person comes back for another visit!)
(Now, I’m worried. The last time I made a drop-off at the local Sally Ann store, I’m pretty sure their reaction could be accurately described as “graciously accepting”)

PUFFER BUFFER:
A Singapore beer brand has teamed up with fashion designer Izzy Du to create a puffer jacket that’s designed to lower your body temperature. How? By carrying around cold cans of beer, of course. When the wearer puts ice-cold beer cans into the pockets, they supposedly send a cooling effect across your torso through a network of tubes filled with water, which is pumped around the body. The designers say it can lower your body temperature by up to 5°C (41°F). The beer-filled puffer jacket made its debut at Paris Fashion Week, of course!
(Well, at least then you’d have an excuse for wearing a puffer jacket IN THE SUMMER: It’s got air conditioning – and you’re drunk!)
(Anyone know where I can get some cans of antifreeze for Winter?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ They might be interested in this at the recently-announced Nerf theme park in Brazil: A German engineer has custom-built a toy minigun capable of firing off 684 Nerf darts in one minute — more than 11 per second. Thomas Busch’s MOAB, or “Mother of All Blasters”, broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest motorized foam dart gun fire rate. The darts fly at a speed of 45 mph (72kph), approximately the same as a standard Nerf gun, but according to the designer, the high rate of fire adds a little extra sting. Quote: “It does hurt a bit”. (That’s what his kids told him, anyway…)
➢ Residents of Leighton, Pennsylvania are being asked to keep a lookout for a tortoise who escaped his home at a veterinary clinic – for the third time! The Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital said in a Facebook post that Tank, a tortoise belonging to veterinarian Mike Nelson, escaped from his outdoor pen at the clinic. A vet tech said Tank is known for his escapes, and is nicknamed Houdini. According to her, the previous 2 times Tank hightailed it out of his cage, he was missing for about 2 weeks. (…and was found about 4 feet away!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Teens get as many as 237 notifications each day on their smartphones, according to a new report by Common Sense Media. The research says adults often turn off their notifications, but teens usually keep alerts on — and impulsively check their phones throughout the day — even when they feel bombarded. About one-fourth of notifications came during school hours, and researchers said phones and apps could improve on cutting down unnecessary alerts at times when teens shouldn’t be disrupted.

BS CHRONOMETER 9.29.23

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “National Coffee Day”, celebrating one of the world’s favorite beverages. It’s also to promote fair trade and to raise awareness of the plight of coffee growers. Today is also “Biscotti Day”, which is fairly handy. (BTW, Sunday is “INTERNATIONAL Coffee Day”)
SIGNS YOU’RE DRINKING TOO MUCH COFFEE…
✓ You call a radio talk show and they ask you to “turn yourself down”.
✓ You finish your 60-minute presentation before everyone is seated.
✓ You’re passing everybody on the freeway when suddenly you realize … you’re not in a car.
✓ Starbucks owns the mortgage on your house.
✓ You have a picture of your coffee mug … on your coffee mug.
✓ Your boss asks to meet with you at 2:00, and you eagerly ask, “AM or PM?”
✓ Your birthday is a national holiday in Brazil.
• “Michaelmas”, the feast day of St Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of exorcists. It’s also known as “Goose Day” in some places, thanks to the old English proverb which says, “If you eat goose on Michaelmas Day, you will never want money all the year round.” In the Middle Ages, it celebrated the end of harvest, when laborers were paid with meat, ale, fish, ale, good bread … and ale.
• “World Heart Day”, a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease. LINK: https://world-heart-federation.org/world-heart-day
• “Ask a Stupid Question Day”, created by some unknown keener who decided that ‘asking a stupid question is better than repairing a stupid mistake’. It’s a good excuse to pose perplexing questions like…
⇒ If our knees were bent the other way, what would a chair look like?
⇒ Why did Yankee Doodle name the feather in his hat ‘Macaroni’?
⇒ Can we spell the word ‘creativity’ however we want?
⇒ Can you be a ‘closet claustrophobic’?
⇒ If winning isn’t important … why do we keep score?
⇒ Why aren’t blueberries blue?
• “Confucius Day”, born in China in 551 B.C., he was one of the earliest, and perhaps the first great philosopher. He was also a teacher, a scholar, and a politician, and came up with 499 famous sayings, including: “Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you.”
• “International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste”, a day to prioritize actions and move ahead with innovation to reduce food loss and waste.
• “Hug a Vegetarian Day”, dedicated to hugging those who love animals the most! Adopting a meat-free diet saves the lives of more than 100 animals per year.
• “Broadway Musicals Day”, Broadway theaters, considered to be unequaled in the English-speaking world, are located in Midtown Manhattan, close to Times Square, near Broadway, although only a handful of them are actually on Broadway. There are more than 40 Broadway theaters, and to be considered, it usually must have at least 500 seats.

SATURDAY-
• “Orange Shirt Day” or “National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (in Canada since 2021), to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools where tens of thousands of First Nations children were taken from their families and forced to attend classes that separated them from their culture. • “Hot Mulled Cider Day”, a day to cradle a warm cup of spiced cider in your hands, breathe in the fragrance, and then take a sip. It’s a cool-weather treat for all your senses.
• “Chewing Gum Day”, Thomas Adams received a patent on the first gum-making machine in 1871. After experimenting with different flavors, he manufactured the first flavored gum in the US, the licorice-flavored “Adams’ Black Jack”. Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit and Spearmint soon followed.
• “International Blasphemy Day”, encouraging individuals and groups to openly express criticism of religion, and blasphemy laws. It was founded in 2009 by the Center for Inquiry.
• “International Translation Day”, introduced in 1991 by the International Federation of Translators. Online translators allow you to switch from language-to-language instantly. Try translating an English message to another language then back to English. Odds are you’ll get something that’s really wonky. LINK: http://translate.google.com/#
• “International Podcast Day”, a celebration of the power of podcasts! Today is a great chance to connect with podcasters and listeners. (And please also leave a 5-star review…)
• It’s also “Ghost Hunting Day” and “Family Health and Fitness Day”. We’re thinking it might be possible to somehow combine the 2…

SUNDAY-
• “October” arrives. It actually means ‘8th month’ but has been the 10th month ever since New Year’s Day was moved from March to January. At other times in history, October has been called Germanicus, Hercules, and Faustinus. So, happy First of Faustinus!
• “Homemade Cookies Day”, What’s the absolute best kind? Chocolate chip? Oatmeal & raisin? Peanut butter? Shortbread? Dirt balls?
• “International Day of Older Persons”, an annual observance begun by the UN to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives.
• “International Music Day”, initiated in 1975 by Lord Yehudi Menuhin to encourage the promotion of musical art among all sections of society.
• “Pumpkin Spice Day”. It was 2003 when the flavor started taking over the world every fall! The first Pumpkin Spice Latte was created in the “Liquid Lab” at Starbucks’ Seattle headquarters that year, and within a decade, it became the company’s top-selling drink, with over 200 million sold.
• “International Coffee Day”, Yes, we celebrated “National Coffee Day” 2 days ago. (Another round?)
• “World Vegetarian Day”, to create awareness of the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. (My friend really changed when she became a vegetarian…It’s like I’ve never seen herbivore!) LINK: http://www.worldvegetarianday.org
• “CD Player Day”, between audio cassettes and the MP3, compact discs were the most popular way to listen to music in parts of the 1980s and 1990s. (They’re like DVDs without the pictures, kids!)
• “Less Than Perfect Day”, a day to accept that it’s okay to not be perfect. Today, remember that we all make mistakes, and that we should try hard at everything we do, but not so hard that we stress ourselves out. (I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken…)

TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS…
➠ Hurricane Ophelia is gone, but there are 3 other systems in the Atlantic that weather experts are tracking. (Since they cause lots of hype for a few days, then disappear forever, I say they should be named after winners of “American Idol”.)
➠ People are still talking about how bad the Dolphins thrashed the Broncos on Sunday (70-20) (It was such a beating that out of habit, Roger Goodell denied seeing it…!)
➠ Researchers believe that the ‘popularity of the internet’ has distracted people from voting in our elections. (I can believe it. I mean, why leave your home to go ‘vote for monsters’ when you can collect them by playing “Pokémon Go”?)
➠ A report found you can improve your relationship by going on a road trip. (Just don’t forget to call every once in a while, and let her know where you are…!)
➠ Fact of the Day:  Mark Twain was born when Halley’s comet was visible; he died when it returned 75 years later. (Roughly the same length of time it took me to read one of his books…)
