Never Accept a Generic – Ask For Pure “BS”!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A Toronto coffee shop has become an unlikely celebrity hotspot after a surprise visit by Tom Hanks. Hanks, who is in the city for the Toronto International Film Festival, stopped by for a cup of coffee at Grinder Coffee on Friday night, as a result of the store’s social media campaign to lure Hanks there. The business put up a life-size cardboard cut-out of Hanks, and made daily social media posts with cheeky references to his films. Owner Joelle Murray says that Hanks was “so funny and generous” during his visit. The visit came a year after Grinder Coffee successfully campaigned for Ryan Gosling to swing by for a cup of joe.

★ Gillian Anderson will play former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in season four of “The Crown”. In a statement, Anderson said that she is excited to have the “opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman.” Production of the fourth season of the Netflix drama is now underway, even though season three doesn’t premiere until Nov. 17.

★ Duane Chapman is going the extra mile to help people in need after his wife Beth Chapman’s death. Dog the Bounty Hunter is encouraging anyone struggling with addiction to reach out to his team for help. He wrote to his more than 400,000 Instagram fans on Friday: “Call my team if you or someone you love has a problem with alcohol or drugs.” He provided a phone number and added, “Let us help you change your life.”

★ Eddie Murphy is planning to return to the stand-up stage in 2020. BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Vinyl — is set to outsell CDs for the first time since 1986. A Recording Industry Association of America report says that vinyl records earned $224.1 million in the first half of 2019. That’s close to the CD numbers ($247.9 million). And CD sales are dying three times as fast as vinyl sales are growing. Still, vinyl record sales accounted for only 4% of revenues, while paid streaming subscriptions accounted for 62%.
• Miley Cyrus – has released the highly-anticipated music video for ‘Slide Away’, one month after her split with Liam Hemsworth. It shows Cyrus surrounded by people at a party, but she never engages anyone. She hasn’t confirmed or denied that ‘Slide Away’ is about her marriage.
• Justin Bieber – He and Hailey Bieber are set to say their “I dos” again. The pair, who have reportedly tried three times already to get their wedding party together, have now settled on South Carolina. They have reportedly sent out comic-book themed “Save the Date” cards for Sept. 30.
• Chester Bennington – His widow Talinda has announced her engagement, two years after the singer’s death. She shared the news with fans on social media Friday, saying, “you can find love after tragedy”, noting that Bennington’s Linkin Park bandmates are welcoming her husband to be, “Michael F.”, with “open arms.”
• Nirvana — Staffers at a Seattle record store found an old royalty check made out to Kurt Cobain in the store’s basement. The storeowner unearthed the uncashed check for $26.57 tucked in a collection of the rock band’s tour itineraries. He had bought the itineraries along with a box of records in 1993.
• The Band – Their self-titled second album will be reissued on Sept. 27 to commemorate its 50th anniversary. Last week, Robbie Robertson announced “The Last Waltz Tour 2019: A Celebration of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert”, paying homage to the group’s seminal 1976 concert, which kicks off Nov. 5 in Port Chester, NY.
• Judas Priest – Singer Rob Halford will release “Celestial”, his second album of holiday tunes, on Oct. 18. It will feature heavy metal versions of holiday classics such as ‘Deck the Halls’, ‘Away in a Manger’ and ‘Joy to the World’, plus four originals.
• Carrie Underwood — has a book coming out in 2020. “Find Your Path: Honor Your Body, Fuel Your Soul, and Get Strong with the Fit52 Life” describes her fitness routine and goes deep inside her personal journey to overall wellness. Her ‘Fit52 program’ is based on simple exercises and dedication across 52 weeks in a year.
• Kylie Rae Harris – Her mother Betsy Cowan says Harris struggled with alcohol in the years prior to the 30-year-old’s death in a New Mexico car crash in which police suspect alcohol was a factor. Harris died on Wednesday when the vehicle she was driving clipped another, sending her into the oncoming lane of traffic. Another driver also died at the scene.

ASSURANCE OF INSURANCE:
Drivers in Ontario no longer have to carry their automobile insurance papers with them…as long as they have proof of insurance on their smartphone. The change took effect last week, giving drivers the option to carry a “digital pink card” supplied by their insurance company rather than the traditional printed version. The electronic cards have safeguards built in so they can’t be edited or altered. Insurers will continue to issue paper versions of the pink cards for one year to ensure a smooth transition, and motorists switching to the digital version must ensure that they can properly display the electronic pink cards on their smartphones at all times. Some other Canadian provinces and many U.S. states already offer the option.
(Great. Now instead of rummaging through my glove box with a cop shining a flashlight in my window, I’ll be rummaging through my phone [and still not finding it…])
(Now on moving day, I’ll have to borrow my buddy’s pick-up truck…and his phone!)
(I’m not sure I see the advantage to this unless you can do the same thing with your drivers licence and registration…)

BREATHING HEAVY WITH FRESH BREATH:
If you believe the scientists, mouthwash (of all things) can limit the cardiovascular benefits of exercise. A new study, published in the journal “Free Radical Biology and Medicine”, showed how the use of antibacterial mouthwash interferes with a complex molecular mechanism that usually results in the beneficial blood-pressure effects of exercise. Other studies have showed how bacteria in the mouth can speed the growth of colorectal tumors and impair respiratory health. But this study shows that oral bacteria may have some benefits as well, such as helping us receive cardiovascular benefits from exercise. Scientists say that this research may help improve our knowledge for treating high blood pressure more effectively.
(Wow. I’d better stop using that stuff. I mean exercise, of course.)
(I’ll tell you why this doesn’t bother me. After exercising, mouthwash is the LAST beverage that I’m likely to reach for!)
(The funny thing is that I get most of my exercise trying to get the top off of my mouthwash bottle!)

THINGS YOU SHOULD AND SHOULDN’T BUY IN SEPTEMBER:
Buy it:
➠ Mattresses and linens:  They always go on sale this time of year. Don’t even entertain the idea of paying full price for these. (If you believe the commercials, these things are always on sale!!)
➠ iPhones:  Apple unveils their latest phones this month, so if you don’t mind buying last year’s model, it is about to become much more affordable (and you won’t have to worry about the ‘bugs’ that come with a new model, either.)
➠ Summer gear:  Whether you need a new bike, a lawnmower or a patio set, you might find a great deal right now.
➠ Cars:  Next year’s models are arriving now, so it could be a good time to find a great deal on last year’s models. (I’m in the bracket where I’m hoping to score a deal on a used car from the guy who is trying to get a deal on last year’s model!)
Skip it:
➠ Electronics:  With Black Friday coming, and Christmas…maybe just wait a bit…
➠ Halloween costume:  The longer it stays in stores, the cheaper it will be. Wait at least until October. (Or November!)
➠ Appliances:  Again, you might want to wait until Black Friday. New models are coming soon, and deep discounts on older models are sure to follow. (With apologies to our local appliance sponsor…!)

DID YOU KNOW?

It is almost impossible to change someone’s mind using facts. This is due to “motivated reasoning”. A psychology term that refers to the way people usually believe whatever they want to believe and use the flimsiest piece of evidence to justify it, even when there is plenty of verified evidence to disprove it.
