Bullseye!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Brendan Fraser’s return to Hollywood at the 79th Venice Film Festival was met with many tears. During Sunday night’s world premiere of “The Whale”, the 53-year-old was overcome with emotion as he sobbed throughout the film’s entire 6-minute standing ovation. In the psychological drama directed by Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky, Fraser portrays a 600-pound gay man confined to a wheelchair. He spent 6 hours in makeup each day in order to transform into the character. Inside the Sala Grande Theatre in Venice, a number of other audience members also shed tears during The Whale’s heartbreaking final scenes. During the ovation, Fraser hugged Aronofsky several times and bowed to the audience as they cheered loudly for his performance, which looks promising in the 2023 Oscars race for best actor. ★ Movie theaters once again experienced a horrible end-of-summer weekend at the box office. Without any major releases on the calendar, Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — WHICH debuted in December of 2021 — managed to return to the #1 spot in North America over Labor Day weekend. Sony re-released the film with 11 minutes of extra footage that proved to be tantalizing to some comic book fans, bringing in about $7.6 million. “Top Gun: Maverick” was expected to nab about $7 million for second place. The triumph of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Top Gun: Maverick” highlights the bleak landscape at the box office, considering both are already widely available on home entertainment.

★ Adele, Eminem, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are all on the cusp of becoming EGOT winners, because they just snagged a crucial letter in the acronym – the “E”. All 4 won Emmy awards Saturday. Adele’s “One Night Only” show — where she was singing at the Griffith Observatory last year — took home 5 Emmys, in fact, including for Outstanding Variety Special. Eminem won the Best Variety Special (live) award for his appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show this year, while McCartney and Starr both received an Emmy in the documentary/nonfiction category for their roles as producers of “The Beatles: Get Back”. With the Emmy wins, all 4 are just a “T” (Tony Award) away from coveted EGOT status.
-TMZ, People
★ Spencer Pratt has explained himself after describing Lisa Kudrow as “one of the worst humans” he’s ever met. Pratt made the claim about the “Friends” star on TikTok in response to a fan who asked him to name the rudest celebrity he’s ever met. After many of his followers asked him to reveal his reasoning, especially considering Kudrow is beloved by many, Pratt, best known for reality show “The Hills”, said that in 2009, when he and his wife Heidi Montag were invited to their first “elite A-list party”, Kudrow approached the couple, and proceeded to tell his wife, QUOTE: “that she needs to get away from me as fast as possible because I’m going to murder [her]”. Pratt claims Kudrow then told him he had “the eyes of a serial killer”. Pratt says following that…there were “no laughs; she just walks away, and that right there was the rudest moment I’ve ever encountered with a human being.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Miley Cyrus — has sold her 5-bedroom, 6,700 sq. foot estate near Nashville for $14.5 million, far more than double the $5.8 million she paid for it in 2017. Reportedly, it’s the 2nd most-expensive home sale in the Nashville area in 2022, behind the $18 million Reese Witherspoon and her husband paid for a place in the ultra-exclusive Belle Meade area.
• The Weeknd — was only 3½ songs and about 15 minutes into his second sold-out night at LA’s SoFi Stadium Saturday, when he suddenly stopped the show. Citing vocal problems, he tearfully apologized to the 70,000 fans for not being able to put on “the concert I want to give you right now,” then left the stage. He has promised to “make it up” at a later date.
• Taylor Hawkins – The highlight of Saturday’s star-studded tribute concert at Wembley Stadium may have come during the final segment, which featured Foo Fighters returning to the stage to play a rendition of ‘My Hero’ with Hawkins’ 16-year-old son, Shane, behind the kit. Subsequently, countless fans suggested on social media that he step into his dad’s role as Foos’ drummer on a full-time basis. LINK (chills): https://tinyurl.com/mref6nex
• Ozzy Osbourne – The one-time star of “The Osbournes” will be the subject of a new 10-part reality series of for BBC One. “Home To Roost” will document Ozzy and wife Sharon’s journey back to Britain, alongside daughter Kelly and son Jack’s efforts to support them. It’ll air next year.
• Nirvana — The 3-year legal battle over the “Nevermind” album cover is effectively over, with its fourth court presentation having been dismissed by a judge. Spencer Elden, who’s pictured as a baby on the sleeve, tried to sue the band, a photographer, and several record labels, accusing them of “child pornography”, as he’s naked in the image.
• Trace Adkins – In a new clip, he can be seen duetting with his “Monarch” co-star Emma Milani on the song ‘Half of my Hometown’, which Kelsea Ballerini and Kenny Chesney took to #1 last year. The new clip is from the show, where Adkins stars as ‘Albie Roman’, a country star who is the patriarch of “the first family of country music.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mske7xy5
• Maren Morris — raised $100,000 in just one day, after announcing a new line of T-shirts to support the the GLAAD Transgender Media Program. Friday, she announced the release of a shirt that humorously reads, “Maren Morris: Lunatic Country Music Person”, after being labeled as such by Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight”. The shirt also includes a hotline help number. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4ku4ktpe

SHOOTING THE BULL

SNACK ATTACK:
Due to “shrinkflation”, the size of our snack packages may be getting smaller, but our appetite for eating them definitely isn’t. Big companies report that snack sales are soaring. Doritos, Cheetos, Ruffles, PopCorners, Smartfood and SunChips sales all grew by double digits in the second quarter. Yes, that’s partially because snacks are getting more expensive, and because people are getting back to their ‘normal’ lives and want food they can eat on the go. But experts say it’s not just that. Eating habits have changed, and people are increasingly snacking instead of eating traditional meals. About 64% of consumers across the world said they prefer to eat several small meals throughout the day, rather than a few large ones, according to a 2021 survey, up from 59% in 2019. About 62% reported replacing at least one meal a day with snacks. In the US, the snack market grew from about $117 billion in 2017 to an estimated $151 billion in 2022, and is forecasted to grow to $170 billion in 2027.
(Actually, given the choice, I’d prefer to eat several LARGE meals throughout the day…)
(They missed the most obvious reason for the increase in snacking – legalization!)

GREAT NEWS, EVERYONE:
⇒ An eco-friendly form of air conditioning that could dramatically reduce the environmental harm caused by current A/C units has been developed by US scientists. Existing air conditioning is a huge driver of global warming because the refrigerants it uses are thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide and cause huge amounts of damage when they accidentally leak. The new device works by using solid refrigerants to effectively cool a space, the Harvard scientists say. Unlike gasses, solids won’t leak into the environment from air conditioning units. (Sounds like they did us a solid…)
⇒ Someday, we could be charging our phones and tablets wirelessly through the air, thanks to newly developed technology. South Korean researchers have used infrared laser light to transmit 400mW of light power over distances of up to 30 meters (98 feet). That’s enough juice to charge small sensors, though in time it could be developed to charge larger devices such as smartphones. The technical term for it is ‘distributed laser charging’, and while it’s still early days for the technology, it could also someday make a huge difference in industrial environments where cabling is hard to put together or maintain. (I’m still holding out hope that one day, they’ll be able to create the Bluetooth garden hose!)

GRAND OLD AGE:

If you’re not very excited about the prospect of growing old, I’ve got some good news for you. According to a survey, 7 in 10 of us agree that life actually gets better as you age. A survey of 2,000 Americans examined perspectives around aging and found that most agree that in today’s world, there’s a negative bias around aging or the perception of being old (77%). In fact, 6 in 10 said they avoid sharing their age in fear of being “judged”. And social media certainly doesn’t help, with 77% agreeing that social media filters send the wrong message about physical appearances. On the plus side, 75% of respondents to the survey by OnePoll said that age is not something to fight or fear, but an opportunity to live a more fulfilling and emotionally and physically healthy life. And 71% said they have seen areas of their lives improve with age, specifically confidence (49%), sense of self (45%), and relationships with family members (44%). And most people aged 30 and up feel more fulfilled (69%) and satisfied (71%) with their lives today, than when in their 20s.
(Me too – I was still getting grounded by my Mom when I was in my 20s!)
(However, my knees would tell you a different story…)

TOMORROW’S PHONE – TOMORROW:
Tomorrow, Apple will unveil the next generation of smartphones. Here are the hottest rumors about the iPhone 14 series…according to those who supposedly know…
➢ Ditching the ‘notch’ design on the screen:  iPhone 14 will go to a “long pill” design: This is actually a big deal to iPhone aficionados. Apple is expected to use a software tweak, and by using Face ID sensors and the front-facing camera, it will add privacy labels.
➢ A camera app revamp thanks to the new design:  Because of the changes to the top of the screen, controls such as the flash button and Live Photo button are now positioned in the status bar, giving users a larger view of the camera preview.
➢ The larger regular iPhone to be called ‘14 Plus’, not ‘Max’:  Apple is also said to be ditching the iPhone mini model in regard to a larger version of the regular model.
➢ The classic battery indicator is making a comeback with iPhone 14 Pro series:  Apparently, the iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16 will bring back the classic battery indicator on the status bar. (Yay! I can once again actually see the percentage drop while using GPS!)
➢ The price will go up, but not as much as we feared:  In light of a tough economy and a declining market, Apple is expected to play safe with prices. One report has the new series priced like this (all in USD): iPhone 14: $749; 14 Max: $849; 14 Pro: $1,049; 14 Pro Max: $1,149. iPhone 13s currently run from $700-$1099.
➢ All models will have 6GB of RAM, Pro models start with 256GB of storage:  For context, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini have 4GB of RAM, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have 6. (I didn’t even know smartphones have RAM!)
(I’m always very excited to hear about the new features I’ll be enjoying…in about 5 years!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A nursing home in Japan is “hiring” babies for a very important job – to keep its elderly residents company and make them smile. The salary? Diapers and milk formula. New recruits at the facility in Kitakyushu must be under 4 years old, and parents must sign a contract stipulating that the babies and toddlers can show up for work “whenever they feel like it”. They are allowed to take a break “when they feel hungry, sleepy or depending on their mood”, according to the contract. More than 30 babies have been signed up so far.

BS CHRONOMETER 09.06.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Telephone Tuesday”, based on the clear spike in telephone calls experienced today by businesses and organizations. The high number of calls are partly due to unmanned telephones during the long weekend. Also, summer is ending, school is starting, and people want to take care of things they’ve been putting off since spring arrived. (Plus, Little Johnny’s teacher is already calling about his behavior…)
• “Coffee Ice Cream Day”, which offers a wake-up and a treat all in one. Although the first recipe, named “egg coffee” and consisting of cream, crushed ice, and coffee syrup, first appeared in 1919, today’s version is made by dissolving fine coffee grains in a hot ice cream base.
• “Fight Procrastination Day – Do It! Day”, a day to get things done. (Or at least finish one of those things you meant to do on this day LAST year!)
• “Barbie Doll Day”, marking the anniversary of the day that the Barbie doll first went on sale in 1959. Barbie was thought up by Ruth Handler, whose husband Elliot was one of Mattel’s founders.
• “Another Look Unlimited Day”, when you’re supposed to look around your home for things you don’t need, but instead of throwing them in the trash, give them to a charity or to friends, or find a way to repurpose the item. (A bit easier to ‘clear things out’, with the kids back in school!)
• “Read a Book Day”, a day to take time out of your busy life, and relax with a good book. (Because who relaxes with a bad book??)
• “Great Egg Toss Day”, probably Humpty Dumpty’s least favorite day! (***See “Today’s Records”, below***)

TODAY’S SCOOP OF BS:
➠ Life expectancy in the US has fallen to 76.1 years of age; however, scientists say that walking 30 minutes a day can add years to your life. (As long as your walk ISN’T in downtown Detroit!!)
➠ A study suggests that children feel more comfortable telling robots about their mental health struggles. (No word on whether Dr. Phil even likes kids…)
➠ A 2.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shook 3 North Jersey Counties. (I’m guessing it’s God’s long- overdue punishment for The Situation”.)
➠ A report says that nearly 80% of all U.S. currency is in the form $100 bills. (Which comes in very handy when you need exact change for something – like a Starbucks coffee, for example!)
➠ Jeff Foxworthy is 64 today. (And if you still think he’s funny, there’s no “might”…you ARE a redneck.)
