BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

*** [UPDATE] *** ★ Rap megastar Kendrick Lamar will headline the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show. The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Lamar will lead the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome on Feb. 9. The 17-time Grammy winner said he’s looking forward to bringing hip-hop to the NFL’s championship game, where he performed as a guest artist with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg in 2022. Lamar has experienced massive success since his debut album in 2012, including becoming the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to win a Pulitzer Prize, for his 2017 album “DAMN”.

★ In his final weekend as “Wheel Of Fortune” host before Ryan Seacrest takes over for today’s season premiere, Pat Sajak won for ‘Outstanding Host For A Game Show’ at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards Saturday. Sajak was not on hand to accept the award for his final season of Wheel Of Fortune, which he is leaving after 4 decades. He won the same award in 1993, 1997, and 1998, and has been nominated a total of 23 times. Sajak also received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 Daytime Emmy Awards.

★ Did someone say Beetlejuice’s name 3 times? Because the mischievous demon triumphantly returned to unleash his mayhem at the box office. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 horror comedy about a pesky poltergeist, scored a huge $110 million domestically in its opening weekend. That gives it the second-biggest September debut of all time, behind only 2017’s “It” ($123 million). It’s also the year’s third-best opening, behind “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2”. Deadpool & Wolverine slid to second place with $6.4 million, and “Reagan” remained at #3.

★ “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” will join “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, “Late Show With Stephen Colbert”, and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” in scaling back to 4 nights of originals a week starting this season. The move is believed to be driven by cost-cutting, which also was behind the decision to drop Late Night’s house band this summer. The Tonight Show had been doing original episodes Monday-Friday during the regular season, while switching to Monday-Thursday during the summer. The off-season schedule will now carry over to the rest of the year.

★ Prince Harry is just days away from his 40th birthday, but he’ll have more than that milestone to celebrate. According to The Times, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, set up a special family trust fund for the Duke of Sussex in 1994 when Harry was 10 years old. She is reported to have deposited £19 million (US$25m) into the fund, £8 million ($10.5m) of which Harry is eligible to receive upon turning 40 on Sept. 15. The Prince’s late great-grandmother is thought to have passed on the money this way to prevent Harry and her other great-grandchildren from having to pay inheritance tax.

★ “South Park” has gone on hiatus for the next few months, and Donald Trump is to blame. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have decided to delay season 27 until 2025. Stone said that after parodying Trump during the elections of 2016 and 2020, the longtime Comedy Central series will be sitting this year out, because they’ve run out of “things we could possibly say” about the Republican presidential nominee, and creating shows during a presidential campaign “kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun.” That means the recent Paramount+ special “South Park: The End of Obesity” will be the show’s only release of 2024.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Kim Petras and The Chainsmokers – Friday, they released the collab (and late contender for “song of the summer”) ‘Don’t Lie’. The Chainsmokers also shared photos from the set of the video shoot on Instagram, writing that the project “marks a shift in the way we’ve been making music in the absolute best way.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/27tye7z5
• Sabrina Carpenter – Her “Short n’ Sweet” album has debuted atop the Billboard 200 chart, moving 362,000 first-week units, making it the year’s 3rd biggest launch (after Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” and Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter”). Carpenter also sent all 10 of her new album’s songs into the top-half of the Hot 100, led by the #2 debut of the new single ‘Taste’.
• Elton John – One incident revealed in the doc “Never Too Late”, which premiered Fri. at the Toronto International Film Festival, is when he and John Lennon, were in a hotel room enjoying “mountains of coke”, and a late-night knock came to the door. It turned out to be Andy Warhol, who they did not let in because he always carried a camera — and they didn’t want their drug-fueled shenanigans documented.
• Weezer – will release an expanded anniversary edition of their beloved self-titled debut, nicknamed the “Blue Album”. As a preview, they’ve dropped a previously unreleased early version of ‘Undone (The Sweater Song)’, the eventual album version of which is an enduring snapshot of the entire ’90s alt/rock era. LINK: https://youtu.be/qQoLs1oEGzE
• Slash – The G’N R guitarist has released a limited edition, vinyl-only compilation of original compositions recorded over the past 6 years for the Halloween Horror Nights ‘Universal Monsters’ haunted house attraction in LA. The 11-track album “Music Of Universal Studios Hollywood – Halloween Horror Nights” will be sold exclusively at Universal Studios Hollywood through Nov. 3, except for 100 copies available online (and probably already sold out…).
• Kane Brown – will receive the Country Champion Award at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards. The show, hosted by Shania Twain, is set for Sept. 26 on NBC and Peacock, live from the Grand Ole Opry. Wynonna Judd received the honor at last year’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards.
• Dustin Lynch – His collab with Jelly Roll, ‘Chevrolet’ is climbing the country charts, and with a title like that, you might assume the company would be putting him the driver’s seat of a brand-new fully-loaded Chevy. But he likes his old 2020 Chevrolet truck just fine. In an interview, he said: “Everybody’s like, ‘You get a new truck out of this song?’ I’m like, ‘Mine’s paid off, I don’t think I want a new truck.’”
• Dwight Yoakam — will release his first album of new music in 9 years, “Brighter Days,” on Nov. 15. The single featuring Post Malone, ‘I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom)’ dropped on Friday. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3u3euf2u

SHOOTING THE BULL

TAKING A “SWIPE”:
These days, a lot of people are relying on Artificial Intelligence for assistance with work projects, science experiments, and yes, even school work. But this is a new application for the tech, at least as far as I know: a Reddit user, who goes by the name “SedRitz”, challenged ChatGPT to “Write the most unattractive Tinder bio you can think of.” The result did not disappoint. Here is the savage response that he…or she…received in response:
”42-year-old couch potato with a passion for complaining. Looking for someone who doesn’t mind my 12 cats and can tolerate my collection of toenail clippings. I don’t believe in deodorant, and I think showering is overrated. My ideal date is watching conspiracy theory videos on YouTube while eating expired canned food. No, I won’t stop talking about my ex, and yes, I live with my mom. Swipe left if you can’t handle the real me.”
(Yup. Definitely a guy!)
(And this guy isn’t already taken?!?!)

GOOD AND BAD “SIGNALS”:
⇒ There is no connection between cellphone use and brain cancer, according a review into the potential risks of cellphone radiation commissioned by the World Health Organization. The review involved 11 experts from 10 countries going over several decades of scientific research to reach their conclusion. It has been a hot topic for health experts and regulators, because mobile phones are often held against the head during use. And they emit radio waves, leading to the idea that cell phones might cause brain cancer. The researchers say their conclusion stands, even among people who spend “all day” on their cellphone. (They did find, however, that those who spend all day on their phone, ARE more likely to believe conspiracy theories like the one that claims cell phones cause brain cancer!)
⇒ Researchers have found that frequent cell phone use may lead to a higher chance of developing cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. A University of Toronto team analyzed health data from over 440,000 people. Results showed that those who use their mobile phones for an hour or more per week have a 10% higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, compared to those who use their phones less. But before you panic and toss your phone, note that this study doesn’t prove that mobile phones directly cause heart problems. It simply suggests a complex relationship between our phone habits, lifestyle factors, and heart health. (Yeah, like the fact that I spent all weekend “doomscrolling”, rather than actually doing something physical!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ It’s not often that when the words “Facebook” and “mental health” are mentioned in the same sentence, it is in a positive way. But recently an AI working for Meta alerted police that a woman was about to commit suicide. The 23-year-old was distraught over what Indian media says were relationship issues, and uploaded a video that was similar to a suicide letter. She fastened a noose around her neck as she spoke. But as the clip was going viral, police received an automated alert from Meta AI that included the rough location of her phone. A female officer soon arrived and spoke to the woman, who eventually removed the noose. Reports say that police are now remaining in constant contact with her, to ensure she is safe.
➢ A no-kill animal shelter charity was invited to start an inmate dog training program at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility last year—and now joy and fulfillment are being created on both sides of the leash. The ongoing program has helped the inmates to develop compassion and to comply with rules. Their task is to socialize the dogs and teach basic obedience that will get the fur-babies adopted more easily. Eight inmates at the Las Cruces prison are now caring for 4 dogs in the program. The inmates have become so devoted to their mission that they held a fundraiser to help pay for program’s costs. One of those involved in the program wrote “I am changed by this experience.” And so are the dogs: All but one that graduated from the program have been quickly adopted.

‘TOP CEREALS’ – NOT ‘CEREAL TOPPINGS’:
If you’re in the mood to spark a debate at work today that will result in someone becoming irrationally angry, and will probably also hurt a few people’s feelings, ask your co-workers: “What is the best breakfast cereal of all-time?” According to Pop Culture site “Complex”, Cinnamon Toast Crunch is #1, and here are the rest of the top-10 . . .
2. Honey Nut Cheerios
3. Cap’n Crunch’s Crunch Berries
4. Oreo O’s
5. Froot Loops
6. Apple Jacks
7. Frosted Flakes
8. Lucky Charms
9. Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds
10. Cocoa Puffs

DID YOU KNOW?

What will you be doing at precisely 12:06pm today? Nothing, probably, because according to new research, that’s exactly the time each Monday when procrastination kicks in. A poll conducted by Talker Research found that 71% of us are guilty of procrastination, and three-quarters of us feel guilty when doing so. The most popular things to do when we should be doing something else were found to be watching TV and movies (50%), scrolling on their phone (of course, 42%), and laying in bed (39%). [I’m such an over-achiever, that when I’m procrastinating, I do all 3 – AND have a snack!]

• “International Sudoku Day”. This date was chosen because 9/9 is symbolic within Sudoku. The objective of the logic-based number puzzle is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row, and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1-9. The name itself means “single number.”
• “Wiener Schnitzel Day”, dedicated to a traditional Austrian dish which belongs to the best-known specialties of Viennese cuisine. It’s a very thin slice of veal, which is breaded, then deep fried in clarified butter or lard.
• “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day”, to stress the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the plight of individuals and families who struggle with FASD. The first “FASDay” was observed on 9/9/99, to signify that a woman should abstain from alcohol during the 9 months of pregnancy.
