Here’s Sheet in Your Eye!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ FOX-TV has given the greenlight to a comedy series roughly based on the life of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. “DeTour” tells the tale of a 30-something rock star who walks away from the spotlight at the height of his fame in an effort to rediscover the parts of his life he missed while he was busy becoming famous. Sounds reminiscent of how Cuomo took a real-life hiatus from Weezer 8 years ago to return to Harvard University and live in a dorm. While the show won’t air until at least 2015, Weezer’s next studio album “Everything Will Be Alright in the End” is due on October 7th.

★ The spectacular oceanfront Southampton NY estate used as Diane Keaton & Jack Nicholson’s love nest in the film “Something’s Gotta Give” has sold for a whopping $41 million. The home featured heavily in the 2003 film as the backdrop for an unlikely love affair. The 11-bedroom mansion has been snapped up by hotel mogul Jimmy Tisch, CEO of Loews Corp, in an off-market deal. That’s right, the property was never even listed. Its previous owner, Alan Meckler, CEO of Mediabistro.com, made a killing, having bought the land for just $5.5 million in 1999 and then building the 8,000-sq-ft house in 2000.

★ And this may be a case of “I do, too!”. Newlywed Angelina Jolie’s reported former lady lover Jenny Shimizu is also getting a fairytale wedding … but with a woman. Shimizu and Jolie are said to have dated off-and-on from 1994-to-2000. Now, the model and former “Foxfire” actress is engaged to brand consultant Michelle Harper. In June they appeared side-by-side in a “Vogue” bridal spread, with Shimizu wearing a not-so-classic white tux and Harper rocking a white-and-black polka dot ball gown. The two met in 2012 at a party given by model Karen Elson.

DO YOU YEARN TO RETURN?
Asked in a new poll which decade of the 20th century they’d most like to go back to, the one most people pick is the 1950s. The decade of economic boom following WW2 is regarded as a time of consumerism, conservatism, and cold-war caution. It was an age of stay-at-home wives, novel household appliances, and new suburbs. Perhaps surprisingly, it is also most popular among women surveyed. The haze of Woodstock and Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s rolled up in 2nd place. In general, poll participants seem to yearn for their youth. Over 50% of those over 65-plus want to revisit the 1950s or 1960s, while those 45-to-64 pine for the 1980s. The youngest adults surveyed were torn between the Jazz Age of the 1920s and the 1990s, their own salad days. (Everything looks so much better in hindsight, no?)

TRY TREEWARE:
Ditch the laptop and pick up a pen, class! Researchers say it’s better for note-taking. Using technology in the classroom can produce fabulous results, but for note-taking it may pay to keep it old-school and stick with a pen & paper. Students who take longhand notes appear to process information more deeply than those who take notes on a laptop, according to a joint Princeton-UCLA study. Students using hi-tech methods generally produce more raw notes, but these students tend to do worse than longhand note-takers when answering conceptual questions about the material. Why? Students using laptops tend to write what they hear verbatim rather than processing the info. This results in ‘shallower’ learning. (Hope you were taking notes on all of this … by hand. There’ll be a quiz tomorrow morning.)

RENT-A-WRECK:
Would you dare to rent your vehicle to a complete stranger? A peer-to-peer car club in the UK hopes enough people will agree to do so in order to make the venture a success. EasyCar Club is described as a nationwide peer-to-peer vehicle rental agency. It allows users to either rent out their car or van up to 7 days per month, or to make contact with vehicle owners in order to arrange a local rental. Owners set the rental price, decide when the car is available, and accept or reject requests to hire. The company supplies comprehensive insurance coverage, and free roadside assistance if needed. It’s developers say it’s like AirBnB for cars, cheaper than Zipcar, and more convenient than Hertz. (“Good news, sir! We found your loaner. It’s in Botswana …”)

FOR THE RECORD:
One strand of the ‘World’s Longest Dreadlocks’ measures 55 ft, 7 ins (17 m). 50-year-old Atlanta GA resident Asha Mandela, who has earned the name ‘The Black Rapunzel’, first started growing her locks 25 years ago. She washes her dreads once a week, using up to 6 bottles of shampoo at a time. The dreads weigh 25 lbs (11 kg) when wet and take 2 days to completely dry. She says the extra weight of her hair makes her doctors very concerned.
