BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Dancing With the Stars” season 31 will feature a lot of firsts – including a move to streaming (on Disney+), the show’s first-ever drag queen competitor, and a brand-new host. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” star D.J. “Shangela” Pierce will be among the competitors for the coveted Mirror Ball trophy. Other stars set to dance this season are: actresses Selma Blair and Cheryl Ladd, TV host Wayne Brady, “Real Housewife” Teresa Giudice, previously-announced competitors Charli D’Amelio and her mom Heidi, “The Bachelorette” star Gabby Windey, and singers Jordin Sparks and Jessie James Decker, among others. Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Derek Hough will be returning to judge, with season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro joining Tyra Banks as a co-host for the new season, which premieres Sept. 19.

★ Zac Efron has finally set the record straight on his face transformation a year after sparking plastic surgery rumors. He told Men’s Health, in his October cover story, that he shattered his jaw while running in his house with socks on. The 34-year-old said he slipped, hit the corner of a fountain, passed out and woke up to his “chin bone … hanging off” his face. Amid the “High School Musical” star’s recovery, his facial muscles got “really, really big” to compensate for the injury, so he worked with a physical therapist to counteract their growth. Efron previously broke his jaw in 2013. Fans first noticed Efron’s transformed face in April 2021, which led to rumors that he had gone under the knife.

★ When “The Masked Singer” Season 8 debuts in 2 weeks, it’ll be with an all-new format. There will be at least 2 unmaskings in each episode, with surprise eliminations along the way. Producers are also taking a page out of the “Dancing With the Stars” book by introducing theme nights. The first 3 rounds will follow a “King and Queen” style, with one of 2 contestants eliminated in the middle of the show. The 2 remaining singles will perform again in a “Battle Royale” to declare the ultimate winner of the episode. After 3 rounds, there will be 3 semifinalists.

★ The third episode of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” arrived Sunday, and a Twitter user pointed out that ‘King Viserys’’ missing fourth and fifth fingers were not edited out as apparently intended in “green screen” effects. The scene under scrutiny involves the king (Paddy Considine) handing a letter to a soldier. The eagle-eyed Twitter user zoomed in on the king’s fingers, which were previously missing, but appear green. The shot will be updated on platforms this week, according to sources. The incident prompted “Game of Thrones” fans to recall the appearance of a Starbucks coffee cup in Season 8, Episode 4.

APPLE JUICE:
While everyone’s talking the new Apple iPhone 14s this week, lawmakers in Brazil can’t get over the fact that the company is no longer supplying chargers with their phones. And as a result, the country’s Ministry of Justice has banned the sale of iPhones in Brazil until Apple starts putting chargers back in the boxes. The department issued the order Tuesday alongside a fine equivalent to US $2.3 million for the tech company, which has sold smartphones without a charger since the release of the iPhone 12 (2020). The Ministry of Justice and Public Security argued that selling the phones without chargers equates to selling an ‘incomplete product’. Apple claims that the decision was made out of ‘environmental concern’, but the Brazil’s consumer affairs branch said the burden of securing a charger was then transferred to the customer.
(But they’ve got to admit, those are definitely “baseless” charges!)
(I thought the fine should be at least a Brazilian!)

GETTING A LIFT – LITERALLY:
Breast implants and butt lifts may be a recession-proof business, according to a new survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The first-of-its-kind poll reveals 3 in 4 cosmetic surgeons are seeing booming business as people move past the coronavirus pandemic. The survey also found that nearly 30% percent of cosmetic surgeons say their business has actually doubled after COVID, with women between 31-45 the most likely patients to seek breast implants, liposuction, and tummy tucks. Why now? For many, COVID shutdowns allowed people to work from home — giving them a chance to save up more money, instead of dining out or spending on the daily commute.
(Well, that explains all those new faces when we went back to work!)
(So…if you car doesn’t need a lube job, you might as well get a boob job?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A student newspaper at Australia’s University of Queensland is defending a controversial article that provided shoplifting tips to cash-strapped students. The piece, “The Subtle Art of Shoplifting,” was published in the Semper Floreat on Saturday. In it, the anonymous writer advised readers on “frifting,” or “free shopping.” Frifting is explained as “a legitimate action for the working class to take in ongoing class war.” Tips included wearing a mask and covering identifiable markers like piercings and tattoos. Public officials quickly condemned the article, with Education Minister Christian Rowan saying that encouraging people to commit criminal offenses would lead to anarchy. But editor-in-chief William Kugelman wrote an op-ed saying the paper stands by its “decision to publish the hypothetical safe shoplifting guide” because “Increasingly, people are forced into impoverishment and homelessness, while the ruling class, governments, and corporations, enjoy the fruits of the working class’ stolen labor.” (He didn’t respond to a request for more comment, because someone stole his laptop!)
➢ A Minnesota teenager broke his own Guinness World Record when his open mouth was measured at 4.014 inches (10.2cm). Isaac Johnson originally set the record at age 14 in 2019, when his mouth gape was measured at 3.67 inches. His record was broken later the same year, but Johnson reclaimed it in 2020 when his gape was measured at 4 inches, and now he has broken his own record on an Italian TV show, where adjudicators measured his gape at 4.014 inches. Isaac, who says his family and friends have always known he has “a pretty large mouth”, can fit his fist, a full-sized orange, or 4 stacked McDonald’s cheeseburgers into his mouth. DID YOU KNOW?
A 9-year-old New Zealand boy unearthed a giant 3-foot earthworm in his backyard. Footage of the colossal nightcrawler is blowing up on Facebook. Barnaby Domigan said: “I thought it was massive, and amazing, and a little bit disgusting.” The Kiwi kid had exhumed the “Dune”-esque dirt digger by a stream at the bottom of the family’s garden in Christchurch. Facebook pics show the youngster using a stick to tote the supersized soil snacker, which is so big it looks photoshopped. And while his mom thought the 3-foot worm was “the stuff of nightmares,” Barnaby thought it was “wonderful.” After snapping a pic of the titanic tunneler, he released the earthworm he had named “Jim” back into the garden. (Right now, everyone in Australia is saying: “THAT’S not a big wahurm…THIS is a big wahurm!”) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yckwe5mw

BS CHRONOMETER 09.09.22
BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Teddy Bear Day”, honoring the first and most popular plush animal toy that was inspired by the helpless cub that US president Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot while hunting in 1902. Morris & Rose Mitchom, owners of a Brooklyn NY candy store, took credit for creating the first ‘Teddy Bear’, but German toymaker Steiff may have already been making them.
• “Wonderful Weirdos Day”, saluting all people who are . . . well, kinda quirky. Know any? If you’re typically on the prim and proper side, use this day to let loose.
• “International Sudoku Day”, today was chosen because 9/9 is symbolic within Sudoku. Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle with the objective to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row, and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1 to 9. The name itself means “single number.”
• “National Wiener Schnitzel Day”, dedicated to a traditional Austrian dish which belongs to the best-known specialties of Viennese cuisine. It’s a very thin slice of veal which is breaded and then deep fried in clarified butter or lard.
• “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Day”, raising awareness about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the plight of individuals and families who struggle with FASD. The first “FASDay” was observed on 9/9/99, to signify that a woman should abstain from alcohol during the 9 months of pregnancy.
SATURDAY-
• “International Make Up Day”, but it’s got nothing to do with face paint. If there’s someone you’re estranged from, this is the day to talk to them to see if the relationship can be salvaged. (When’s “International Make OUT Day”?)
• “TV Dinner Day”, In 1953, Swanson changed the prepackaged meal business forever by introducing the TV Dinner, consisting of turkey, cornbread dressing, peas, and sweet potatoes. By 1962, they had stopped using the name TV Dinner, but the term remains synonymous with any prepackaged dinner purchased frozen from a store and heated at home.
• “Swap Ideas Day”, because bouncing ideas off people is great for getting those creative juices flowing. Today you’re encouraged to trade ideas with others, to foster a sense of teamwork. (Good idea!)
• “World Suicide Prevention Day”, to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world. LINK: https://www.iasp.info/
• “Sew Be It Day”, on this day in 1846, Elias Howe was awarded the first American patent on a sewing machine. The first sewing machines were actually made in France in the 1830s. (Or sew it would seam…)
• “Aunt’s Day”, to celebrate the relationship they have with their nieces and nephews. Maybe you have special aunts who spoiled you when you were a kid, bringing you special treats and gifts. (Or when you were a teen – bought you liquor behind your parents’ back!)
• “National Hot Dog Day”, (There’s also a “Hot Dog Day” in July – just go with it!) 5 things to know about everyone’s favorite street meat:
→ It is estimated that over 7 billion are eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
→ The term “hot dog” is credited to sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. At a baseball game in New York in 1901, vendors began selling hot dachshund sausages in rolls.
→ The most popular condiment for adults is mustard, while children prefer ketchup.
→ The first words Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse ever uttered in a cartoon were “hot dogs” in “The Karnival Kid” in 1929.
→ The average American eats approximately 60 hot dogs per year.
SUNDAY-
• “Patriot Day” (formerly “9/11 Remembrance Day”), 21 years ago at 8:46 am EDT, terrorists began the attack on NYC’s World Trade Center using hijacked airliners. The Pentagon in Arlington VA was subsequently targeted, and an attempt by passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 to retake control of their hijacked plane caused it to crash in a Pennsylvania field, killing all 64 on board. Patriot Day is in memory of those killed in the attacks, believed to number 2,996.
• “Emergency Number Day”, saluting the direct-dial 9-1-1 emergency system. (In the UK it’s 9-9-9; in Australia 0-0-0, in New Zealand 1-1-1, in much of Europe 1-1-2)
• “Hot Cross Buns Day”, a sweet, spiced bun made with currants or raisins and leavened with yeast. As the name suggests, these baked goodies are marked with a cross on the top, which is supposed to symbolize the crucifixion. (Now? I thought they were an ‘Easter’ thing??)
• “Make Your Bed Day”, many of us don’t make our beds every morning. Today is a good day to start. Doing so will make you feel better, and it is also good for your sleep. (Plus, if your spouse is still in there, it’ll drive them nuts!)
• “No News is Good News Day”, a day to take a break from all the bad news about catastrophes, disasters, crisis and sorrow. Just turn off the news for a while, enjoy the silence, and stop thinking about all the bad things. (Turn off the news? This public service message NOT brought to you by this station!!)
• “I Want to Start My Own Business Day”, if you really want to start your own business, your first step is to write down your goal. (After that? Uh…I don’t have a clue…)
• It’s also “Hug Your Hound Day”, “Pet Memorial Day”, and “Grandparents Day”, just in case you needed some good feels this weekend!
