BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ It’s been revealed that Anne Heche did not leave a will, so her adult son has requested to gain control of the late actress’ estate following her untimely death last month. Homer Laffoon filed paperwork in Los Angeles Superior Court requesting he be named administrator. The 20-year-old is also seeking the court name him guardian over his 13-year-old brother, Atlas, court documents show. Homer noted that the estimated value of Heche’s estate is “unknown,” so it will have to undergo forensic accounting. There is a hearing scheduled for Oct. 11.

★ In a commentary published in the New York Times, Ashley Judd explains why she has filed a petition attempting to block the release of a report on the death of her mother, Naomi Judd — saying “the horror” of the experience “will only worsen if the details surrounding her death are disclosed by the Tennessee law that generally allows police reports, including family interviews…to be made public.” Judd reveals that her mother — who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at home on April 30 — was still alive when police arrived, and contends that the barrage of questioning kept her from attending to her mother in some of her final moments. Most relevant to her objection to the report is that she says family members revealed many personal things in the interrogation without any thought as to how those details would forever become part of the public record.

★ “The View” has announced the show’s celebrity lineup for season 26 — and it includes some big names. The season, which kicks off Tuesday, will open with Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton promoting their docuseries “Gutsy”. From there, a list of revolving guest hosts will take the table’s extra seat, including “Hello Sunshine” founder Reese Witherspoon, “iCarly” alum and author Jennette McCurdy, “Abbott Elementary” star and creator Quinta Brunson. Others include actors Regina Hall, Constance Wu, Viola Davis, Billy Eichner, Elisabeth Moss, Jameela Jamil, and Dylan McDermott, plus “Mel C”, LeAnn Rimes and Idina and Cara Menzel.

★ “Ozark” star Jason Bateman is sticking with Netflix for his next project. He signed on to star in “Carry On”, a new drama from “Jungle Cruise” director Jaume Collet-Serra. “Rocketman” star Taron Egerton will co-star. Carry On tells the story of a TSA agent who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a package go through security for a Christmas Day flight. Sources say Bateman will star as the mysterious traveler. He has a long history with Netflix, which famously revived “Arrest Development” in 2013. Bateman also starred in Ozark, and in 2019, he won the Primetime Emmy for directing the episode “Reparations.”

IN A BAD LIGHT:
Staring at your phone for hours upon hours is not only taking up a lot of your time – it’s making you older. Or at least making you LOOK older. Dermatologists have long understood that UV rays from the sun damage the appearance and overall health of the skin — but new findings from a study published in the journal Frontiers in Aging indicate that “excessive exposure to blue light (from our devices)…may have detrimental effects on a wide range of cells in our body, from skin and fat cells, to sensory neurons,” including the creation and deepening of wrinkles. Oregon State University scientist Jadwiga Giebultowicz said the study “suggests that avoidance of excessive blue light exposure may be a good anti-aging strategy.” The team also pointed out that it’s been previously declared that “too much screen use has been linked to obesity and psychological problems.”
(***Caution*** That’s the good news. ‘Cause if you’re dealing with those, wrinkles are the LEAST of your problems!)
(And I thought all those new wrinkles around my eyes were because I refuse to wear my ‘readers’!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ Step aside, ultramarathoners: America has a new endurance athlete, and he’s as gourd as it gets. A Nebraska man has set a new world record after paddling 38 miles (61km) down a river in a huge, hollowed-out pumpkin that he grew himself. Duane Hansen completed his journey last week, according to a Facebook post from the city of Bellevue. Photos show Hansen crouched inside the giant squash, which weighed in at 846lb. Hansen set off down the Missouri river around 7:30am and completed his journey just after 6:30pm. The 60-year-old, who named the orange vessel Berta, said of his experience: “I went 38 miles down the river without standing up in that pumpkin and my knees still hurt.” (Oh, my gourd!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2hsbzxsw
➢ A pilot of a flight to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, took to the intercom and threatened to return the aircraft to its departure gate if passengers didn’t stop AirDropping nude photos to him. Through AirDrop, iPhone users can send digital files to other Apple products in close range without using Wi-Fi or data. TikTok user @TeighMars posted footage where the pilot tells passengers: “So here’s the deal, if this continues while we’re on the ground, I’m going to have to pull back to the gate, everybody’s going to have to get off, we’re going to have to get security involved and [your] vacation is going to be ruined.” He goes on in the viral clip, which has almost 3 million views: “So you folks, whatever that AirDrop thing is, quit sending naked pictures, and let’s get yourself to Cabo.” As you can imagine, amused TikTokers had their own responses to the airplane hijinks, with one commenting: “Pilot had ‘Don’t make me turn this plane around!’ energy Love it!” (Is that what they mean by “FREAK-went flyers”?) HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING:
➢ Make a list:  Assign a budget and stick to it. (And for God’s sake, DON’T bring the kids along!)
➢ Find sales:  For back-to-school clothes, shop end of summer sales and focus on apparel the kids can wear all year long. (Whether they like it or not!)
➢ Buy in bulk:  Kids can really go through the essentials like paper, pencils, glue sticks and notebooks quickly. (And backpacks. Trust me.)
➢ Do your online homework:  Follow your favorite brands and retailers on social media and sign up for their email newsletters. It’s a great way to stay in the know about the best deals. Sometimes they even have exclusive sales for their followers. (No fair! 4 more days of summer vacation, and I have to do homework?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Psychologists say that when it comes to dating, you should stay in your own league, rather than try to “date up”. A study involving thousands of people found that when partners had matching mate values (i.e., an 8 with an 8, a 4 with a 4, or a 6 with a 6) they had better relationships. Specifically, they reported better sexual history, had more frequent interactions, and stayed together longer. The lesson? When seeking your perfect match, you may not get what you think you want. Instead, you may get exactly what you need to have a great relationship. (On the other hand, when I was dating, I had literally nowhere to go but up…)

BS CHRONOMETER 09.02.22

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “V-J Day” (or ‘Victory Over Japan Day’), the anniversary of the 1945 formal surrender of Japan aboard USS Missouri, marking the end of World War II.
• “Blueberry Popsicle Day”, a celebration of the flavor that leaves your lips and tongue looking like some kind of purple-fleshed alien.
• “Bring Your Manners to Work Day”, an annual reminder that good etiquette eases relationships in the workplace. (What does a co-worker do that drives you round the bend?)
• “Pierce Your Ears Day”, if you aren’t in the mood for piercing your lobes (or any other body part), you can opt to crank up the tunes on your earbuds, and ‘pierce your ears’ in an altogether different manner.
• “Chianti Day”, because why NOT have another day designated for wine drinking?
• “Coconut Day”, you can’t make a piña colada or a decent Thai curry without it, its water makes a great recovery drink, and its fibrous husk, when burned, repels mosquitos. One of nature’s most versatile products, the coconut plant (and its various parts) can be used for food and drink, cosmetic preparations, and decorating. (***BS Fast Fact: Despite having the word “nut” in its name, a coconut is a fruit — not a nut.)
• “Food Bank Day”, created in 2017 to commemorate 50 years since the founding of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the first food bank in the world, by John van Hengel, in Phoenix AZ.
• “Spalding Baseball Day”, paying tribute to Albert Spalding, the manager, executive and co-founder of A.G. Spalding sporting goods company, on the anniversary of his birth in 1849. He became the first famous player to use a fielding glove, in 1877.
• “Wear Teal Day”, a day when teal is worn to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.
• “Calendar Adjustment Day”, marking the day in 1752 that led to the current calendar system, and New Year’s Day being celebrated at the start of January. Due to the fact that Britain was adopting the Gregorian calendar, the people of Britain and the colonies went to sleep, and woke up the next morning to Sept. 14, 1752.
• “World Testicle Cooking Championship” (aka “Ballscup”) begins, the 16th annual 3-day event in Rudnik, Serbia. Serving up a variety of testicles, including wildlife. Yummy. LINK: https://ballscup.com/wtcc/

SATURDAY-
• “National Flag Day” in Australia, celebrating the anniversary of the 1901 date when the new flag, known as the Commonwealth blue ensign, was flown for the first time, over the dome of the Exhibition Building in Melbourne. It was later renamed the Australian National Flag.
• “National Cinema Day” when, for this one day, movie tickets will be just $3 in the vast majority of theaters in the US, Canada and the UK. More than 30,000 screens at more than 3,000 theaters in the US alone plan to take part in this newly-launched event. Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters, but if enough people show up today, this could become an annual event.
• “Bacon Day”, in the US. Bacon refers to meat from the belly of a pig, known as the pork belly. Bacon from the loin is called Canadian bacon.
• “World Beard Day”, all about promoting and elevating the global status of the beard. Today it is supposedly customary for the bearded members of a family to relax and partake in no jobs or chores. The beardless traditionally show their support by waiting on the bearded hand and foot. (Will that happen at my place? “Not by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin!”)
• “Skyscraper Day”, to appreciate and admire the world’s tallest buildings. By definition, a skyscraper is any structure that clearly stands out above its surrounding environment. A loose agreement in North America & Europe puts the lower limit of a skyscraper at 150 meters (500 ft). A skyscraper taller than 300 meters (984 ft) is referred to as ‘supertall’.
WORLD’S TALLEST BUILDINGS:
5. Ping An Finance Centre (Shenzhen, China) …599m (1,965ft)
4. Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower (Mecca, Saudi Arabia) … 601 m (1,971 ft)
3. Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China) … 632m (2,073 ft)
2. Merdeka 118 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) … 679m (2,227 ft)
1. Burj Dubai (Dubai UAE) … 828m (2,717 ft) … 679 m
• “Welsh Rarebit Day”, saluting the traditional dish that, explained simply, is melted cheese on bread. But anyone who’s had it knows it’s far more exotic than that, incorporating butter, flour, cheddar, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, and – optionally – beer.
• “US Bowling League Day”, primarily an outdoor sport until around 1840, the game was called ninepins and was popular with gamblers. To snuff out the gambling, Connecticut banned the game in 1841, but to circumvent the law, indoor lane owners added one pin to their alleys.
• “National Tailgating Day”, since 2016, to celebrate and participate in that great American pursuit of hanging out in a stadium parking lot for food, fun, friends, football, and large amounts of beer and bratwurst. LINK: https://tailgating-challenge.com/national-tailgating-day/

SUNDAY-
• “Macadamia Nut Day”, saluting the yummy nut first found in the rainforests of Australia thousands of years ago by aboriginals. Though they can be toxic to dogs, they are super nutritious for humans. LINK: http://tinyurl.com/lm2ur99
• “Newspaper Carrier Day”, celebrating the anniversary of the first recorded ‘news boy’, 10 year-old Barney Flaherty, who began hawking the “New York Sun” in 1833 (now an endangered species?)
• “Eat an Extra Dessert Day”, guiltlessly indulge yourself in an extra dessert today and inform everyone you know about this happy holiday (…and if they won’t participate, eat theirs too!).
• “National Wildlife Day”, focusing on endangered species, preservation, and conservation efforts around the world. Zoos, aviaries, and marine sanctuaries provide a variety of ways to get involved.
• “Pet Rock Day”, celebrating the collectible craze created by ad exec Gary Dahl, who had the idea to take smooth stones from Rosarito Beach in Mexico and market them like live pets. The fad lasted for just 6 months in 1975, but by selling more than a million Pet Rocks at  $4 each, Dahl became a millionaire.

MONDAY-
• “Labour Day” in Canada (“Labor Day” in the U.S.), celebrated on the first Monday of September. It originally was to celebrate workers’ achievements in the workplace, specifically the 8-hour day movement, and to campaign for better working conditions or pay. The day is considered the unofficial end of summer, with vacations ending and students returning to school around Labour Day.
• “Be Late for Something Day”, sponsored by the Procrastinators’ Club, a day to delay anything you can. (So maybe celebrate this on Tuesday?)
• “Cheese Pizza Day”, saluting the favorite order of cheapskates everywhere.
• “National Shrink Day”, celebrating psychologists and psychiatrists. September 5 was chosen because it is Bob Newhart’s birthday. He played a psychologist on “The Bob Newhart Show”.
• “International Day of Charity”, first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
